sudofail··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Account created 2 minutes ago. Are political bots hitting hacker news as well?
sudofail··on Xbox CEO ends Copilot AI development and overhauls leadership
Sounds promising! Hope she can turn things around.
sudofail··on Actions reflect your priorities
Really sorry there isn’t more support for you and your son. American drug prices are insane. In Australia it’s about 600/month
sudofail··on AMD CEO sees chips from TSMC's US plant costing 5%-20% more
A lot of countries honestly should be taking this approach. Fabrication is just too important for national security. At least some domestic production is critical.
sudofail··on OpenAI Codex CLI: Lightweight coding agent that runs in your terminal
Same, there are so many options these days for writing CLIs without runtime dependencies. I definitely prefer static binaries.
sudofail··on Tesla sales crash continues in Europe, with Germany down 70%
Pretty obvious outcome given the PR nightmare
sudofail··on Dear CTO: it's not 2015 anymore
I've had "unlimited PTO" for most of my 15 year career. I've never been able to take at most, 3 weeks off due to the reasons you mentioned.
sudofail··on MacBook Air, M2 Chip, 8GB RAM: Nothing is open, but half the memory is gone
I thought this as well and bought my wife the 8GB model, thinking it would be enough for her casual use. With nothing open but Chrome or Safari (dozens of tabs, sure) it will lock up and sometimes even hard restart. 8GB is just not enough for anyone anymore.
sudofail··on WWDC 2024 [video]
I'm very disappointed they didn't make any improvements in this area. This was the number 1 thing I was hoping from.
sudofail··on Clues to disappearance of North America's large mammals 50k years ago
Or simply because we don't have evidance of Homo Sapiens in the Americas until ~20k years ago, 30k years after megafuana extinction.
sudofail··on Tech firms must tame toxic algorithms to protect children online
In my view, we need legislation to step in and enforce some level of algorithmic tuning. Modern algorithms drive engagement at all costs, regardless if it's healthy for the individual. I want to be able to tune the algorithm to potentially use a timeline feed instead, or limit content to only come from topics I subscribe to, etc. We probably need parental controls that allow parents to enforce algorithm tuning as well.

A recent example of an algorithm going wrong is Reddit. Home used to show you strictly a feed of reddits you subscribed to, and it was shown as a timeline. The most recent changes not only removed the timeline approach to the feed, it's now injecting subreddits you don't subscribe to and asks if you're interested in them.

sudofail··on Mint is shutting down, and it's pushing users toward Credit Karma
I personally use RocketMoney. I think it actually does a better job than Mint
sudofail··on Archaeologists discover oldest wooden structure
Considering beavers make wooden structures for their own benefit and survival, it's not really surprising that ancestors of Homo Sapiens did as well.
sudofail··on This Voice Doesn't Exist – Generative Voice AI
I think a great use case for this technology could be to preserve dying languages. I'm sure a lot of work has already gone into preserving the written form of these languages, but training models on data sets of native speakers could be a way to preserve pronunciation.
sudofail··on Valve hit a home run with the first year of Steam Deck
I've been hesitant to buy one just because it seems like the screen is subpar. The OLED Switch screen is beautiful, and I'd really like to see something like that in the Steam Deck before purchasing it.
sudofail··on Microrobots can brush and floss teeth in a proof-of-concept study
Philips Sonicare is the way to go. Lot of different options, but they're all great.
sudofail··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
I personally forget the controls (Witcher), or forget quest and storylines.
sudofail··on Hard to work with
I've seen this many times and completely agree. Nearly every issue that I've had managing teams that hasn't easily resolved with communication has come down to ego. I'd go so far as to say that weeding out ego during the hiring process is the most effective thing you can do.
sudofail··on 1Password Blue Ocean Strategy
I'm sure those are valid use cases. It's just not something I've ever needed in 10 years of 1PW. Keychain covers passwords and credit cards, which are all I need it for.
sudofail··on 1Password Blue Ocean Strategy
I've used 1Password for the better part of a decade, but I've slowly been weaning off of it. I'm in the Apple ecosystem, and have switched to using keychain for all my passwords.

I was pretty unhappy when 1Password switched to a subscription model, which is partially why I chose to leave.

1Password's mobile experience also isn't great, especially when compared to iOS's native keychain syncing abilities.

All in all, I'm fairly bearish on 1Password for the personal use case. If you're not in the Apple ecosystem, Google has similar capabilities. If you want to be agnostic, then there are free alternatives as well.

sudofail··on Rome: Decline and Fall? Part II: Institutions
I may be wrong, but don't taxes at large scale predate Rome by millennia? We have thousands of examples of Babylon's detailed record keeping for taxes, for instance.
sudofail··on Prioritization, multiple work streams, unplanned work
We do something very similar to what's laid out here. One note on the On-Call stream though. We've found that On-Call can become a catch-all, and force engineers to work in domains they have no familiarity with. It hasn't worked very well for us.
sudofail··on Mars rover detects carbon signature that may hint at past life source
Not necessarily. Before the great filter, there's the jump to multi-cellular life. As far as we know, the symbioses with mitochondria bacteria only happened once, and is the progenesis of all multi-cellular life on earth.

So single-celled life may not be terribly uncommon throughout the cosmos.

sudofail··on Stockfish 14
Maybe you could evaluate based on changes in player's performance or ELO. If they rapidly begin advancing, it could be more likely they are cheating.
sudofail··on Robinhood, in Need of Cash, Raises $1B from Its Investors
The Big Squeeze
sudofail··on As an older guy I've finally figured out weight-loss
I've done basically the same thing a couple times over the last 10 years. First time I lost 40 pounds or so over a period of 6 months. After a few years, my weight slowly started to rise up a bit, so I had another period of caloric restriction. I lost 25 pounds over two months.

I think the most important part is simply counting your calories. You can't manage what you can't measure. You'd be surprised just how quickly you can get to your daily caloric limit with a few snacks and one large meal.

Now days I don't stress too much about my eating. I still try to keep a caloric balance, but I also know exactly how to lose the weight again if it starts to go up too much.

sudofail··on Party Line – 1:1 chat across the political spectrum
Australia is similar as well. I'm not sure having more parties fundamentally fixes the issues. From my experience, parties just form coalitions that wind up taking similar stances to the US two-party system.

I will say though that the US two-party system seems to promote a deadlock / winner-take-all scenario that doesn't seem as common in other countries. So I do think having something like ranked choice voting will help. It's just not the full solution.

sudofail··on The persecution of the Uyghurs is a crime against humanity
Sorry Dang, you're right. Won't happen again
sudofail··on The persecution of the Uyghurs is a crime against humanity
By that logic, what should the world do if a country is violating basic human rights of over a million people?
sudofail··on The persecution of the Uyghurs is a crime against humanity
Tell the CCP I send my regards
