studer··on The Fridge (YC S10) Takes The Privacy Headaches Out Of Sharing
So what's your definition of "social graph"? In what way is "my list of my group subscriptions" a social graph? Is there a bigger graph? Who has access to that?
studer··on Why Reddit's Founder was "Terrified" to Launch New Startup, Hipmunk (YC S10)
You cannot scrape their prices because they keep bumping them by a cent for each N tickets (so they can say that "only N seats left for X euro, book now before it's too late" all the time), and also because you cannot reliably reverse engineer all their random fees.
studer··on Ask a real musician: opera singer dissects top 5 metal singers
She's a voice teacher. I'm sure you can find, say, some opera connoisseur who hates all other music as a principle, but she's talking about how these singers are using their "instruments", not about what kind of music they're performing.

(the choice of vocalists was a bit pedestrian, though :-)

studer··on Want to pack JS and CSS really well? Convert it to a PNG
PNG uses a predictor tuned to image data, though, so it's a bit tricker than that. But it's good enough for this purpose.
studer··on Proposal: A new kind of blog comment system
If your incentive for commenting is to be seen by others rather than provide feedback to the author, you're exactly the kind of commenter he wasn't interested in seeing:

"I know some people think that blogs are conversations, but I don't. I think they're publications. And I think the role of comments is to add value to the posts. If you want to rebut a post, then you can create your own blog and post your rebuttal there."

studer··on Proposal: A new kind of blog comment system
Did you just read his moderation guidelines? The actual proposal is further down on the page. I'm not aware on any blog using that approach, so I'm not sure what you mean by "well-followed".
studer··on Futurama Writer Created And Proved A Brand New Math Theorem Just For Episode
So can someone with more math knowledge comment on how "Brand New" this theorem is? Comparing the Geekosystem post with the tone of the original APS article, it sure feels like a certain amount of breathless hyperbole was added to the former...
studer··on Prosecutors withdraw warrant for WikiLeaks founder Assange
> or they'd say it's still under investigation.

It still is under investigation, though. Whatever happened is not serious enough for a rape charge with the current evidence, but as I mention below, molestation or just general asshattery is still on the table.

studer··on Prosecutors withdraw warrant for WikiLeaks founder Assange
Yeah, you're right. Also see my other comment.
studer··on Prosecutors withdraw warrant for WikiLeaks founder Assange
According to the interview with one of the victims, it was a consensual situation that got out of hand (in two separate cases). That description is perfectly consistent with the behavior of the prosecutors here; under Swedish law, depending on the exact details, such behaviour might be interpreted as rape, molestation, or just someone being an asshat. After digging into the details, the prosecutors seem to have gone from the rape end of the scale to the asshat end, and that's not a valid cause for arrest.
studer··on Prosecutors withdraw warrant for WikiLeaks founder Assange
Both prosecutors are women. And it's the original arrest warrant that has been withdrawn; the investigation is still open.
studer··on Do you have a different personality when you speak a different language?

studer··on GNU Social - diaspora already has a clone that's usable and free software
Well, if you don't spot the reference (I didn't), it just looks like the developers have a somewhat distorted view of other humans, especially women.
studer··on The Decline of Reddit, Hacker News, and the United States
"Nostalgia isn't what it used to be" in English, usually attributed to writer Peter De Vries.
studer··on Reddit is hiring
Bonus exercise: find the shortest string fragment in that screenshot that returns the mail address if typed into Google. My best out of three quick tries is 14 letters, but I'm sure that's possible to beat.
studer··on Reddit is hiring
If you made a serious attempt to solve the problem, and got three alpha-numeric characters followed by a null byte, I'd say you're pretty much guaranteed to have the right answer.

If you want to triple-check, I registered an HN user with that name at about the same time jedberg submitted this entry. Don't want to spoil his fun, though, so I'm not going to post anything with that name just yet :-)

studer··on Do you have a different personality when you speak a different language?
Nah, it's actually true for Germany too (where do you think the Americans got the idea? :-), but I guess you hear enough stories about German lawsuits over there as I do here...
studer··on Do you have a different personality when you speak a different language?
Yet, the jury put part of the blame on her, and further attempts to sue corporations for serving (or making) hot coffee has gone nowhere. The temperature issue is probably just a legal McGuffin here; in reality, she got the money because McDonalds blew it in the first round, when they refused to contribute to her actual costs.
studer··on Kindergarten enrollment dates affect ADHD diagnosis rates
Yeah, but the Kindergarten cutoff mechanism is irrelevant -- the point is that if you group young kids by some system that's aligned with the calender year rather than their actual age, they're not really peers. You'd get the same effect if you group them by what year they were born in (i.e. used January 1st as the cutoff date).
studer··on Kindergarten enrollment dates affect ADHD diagnosis rates
The title is somewhat misleading -- it's not like Kindergarten causes ADHD. The key observation is that if you grab any group of young kids with an age spread of a full year, "younger children may be mistakenly diagnosed as having ADHD, when in fact they are simply less mature." You cannot just pretend they're all at the same stage of development.

You see a similar effect in sports (where again, older kids in the group will have a big advantage).

studer··on Kindergarten enrollment dates affect ADHD diagnosis rates
Where is "here"? Afaik (but I'm no expert), the diagnosis is used in large parts of Europe (even if some countries use other acronyms). The Swedes even came up with their own version of ADHD, called DAMP:

studer··on Major (unfixable) flaw found in P!=NP paper.
He just posted a new version of the draft, and added this blurb to his home page:

"Vinay Deolalikar. P is not equal to NP. 6th August, 2010 (66 pages 10pt, 102 pages 12pt). Manuscript sent on 6th August to several leading researchers in various areas. You can find the current version here. Please note that the final version of the paper is under preparation and will be submitted to journal review."

So no, he doesn't seem to be backing out...

studer··on Do you have a different personality when you speak a different language?
"people in Berlin yell at each other all the time to resolve conflicts"

Oh, I thought the real German stereotype was that you sued people if they annoyed you even the slightest.

studer··on Q&A on P≠NP Paper for Non-Mathematicians
If you read the entire section from the beginning, you'll notice that you don't really need to know what a Hamiltonian cycle is to understand the explanation. A made-up property would have worked equally well.
studer··on Chromium sends data to Google upon startup
It doesn't do that on all your requests, does it? I thought everyone did that via local bloom table (or similar structure), and checking with a central backend only when it gets a potential hit.
studer··on Major (unfixable) flaw found in P!=NP paper.
"no soul and no will for the enhancement of human knowledge"

Yeah, that's why I wrote "legal" :-)

studer··on Major (unfixable) flaw found in P!=NP paper.
They don't necessarily agree with each other, though, so I'm not so sure how "authoritative" individual blog comments are (see e.g. Bradfield's followup to Jutla -- "And I don’t understand your comment about it not being known whether mu-calculus has a hierarchy of expressibility in alternation. It’s 15 years since I (and independently Lenzi) proved that it did!")
studer··on Major (unfixable) flaw found in P!=NP paper.
Or maybe HP legal told him he couldn't use their web server to host unpublished material...
studer··on Chromium sends data to Google upon startup
From the thread: "We think that the reported RLZ ping behavior (that request to "/tools/pso/ping...") is a regression -- RLZ pings should not be happening in Chromium or non-promotional Google Chrome builds, so this is not the intended behavior."
studer··on Chromium sends data to Google upon startup
The blog post he links to:

http://blog.chromium.org/2010/06/in-open-for-rlz.html

says "Chromium will also continue to exist as it always has, without any RLZ library included. And, you can still download a Google Chrome with no RLZ behavior at www.google.com/chrome. But now that RLZ is open, Google Chrome distributed through promotional means will include this open-source implementation of RLZ.".

So what makes the continuous Chromium build a "Google Chrome distributed through promotional means"?
