studer··on Hiring for Happiness
"My hope is that our employees never, ever feel patronized, belittled or small."

Anyone applying to your company after having read that pile of patronizing crap are probably genetically incapable of feeling patronized or belittled.

(Seriously, I don't think I know a single highly qualified person who wouldn't quit the same day if you showed up and told them that this is how the company will be run from now on, and half of them would punch you in the face on the way out.)

studer··on Why Women Should Flirt at Work
Freak of nature in absolute terms, or for being a talented chick?

From the article: "... evaluators tend to make negative judgments about women who behave in masculine ways to fulfill the needs of their jobs."

(Oh, instant downmod for asking a question related to gender issues. Silly me, forgot what site I was on.)

Hint: you can use search engines to find job descriptions:

"As an AdWords Associate, your main responsibility will be to manage a portfolio of advertiser accounts. You will be working directly with your advertisers to drive revenue and customer satisfaction."

And of course they have phones. If you were the kind of customer they'd be interested in talking to, you would probably have their number already...

Given your statement on MD5 collisions, it's not entirely clear to me who's the script kiddie here.

studer··on A Follow-Up to "The Web is Public Domain"
"Because the writer in question had a copyright on her website where the article can be found, the content of the website is under copyright law."

Ouch. Surely there must be a better source than some junk written by a clueless "digital journalist" with the sole purpose of flooding search engines?

studer··on 18' Canoe from One Sheet of Plywood
"A canoe is deeper, wider and fatter (like some Canadians perhaps ;)"

Not sure about Finland (where the article's author lives), but a wide, fat open canoe is actually called "a Canadian" in many parts of northern Europe.

The concept of an "open kayak" sounds pretty confused, though, given how they were originally built (skins wrapped around a thin wooden frame) and used (coastal sea regions, including the open sea).

It resulted in a 9% increase of the "calls to hotline" metric, so you can just go ahead and pay him:

> In April we began prominently displaying the number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at the top of the results page for certain search queries in the U.S. Since then, our friends at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline have reported a 9 percent increase in legitimate calls to its hotline.

studer··on A hell of a time
You're seriously arguing that a throw-away comment from an anonymous internet poster is enough to invalidate her story, and that we should ignore the victim's story because we might find ourselves in the attacker's situation? What the fuck is wrong with you?
studer··on Goo.gl URL shortener open to everyone
I'm probably unusually dense today, but I don't understand the "Can't I find out where you live by seeing your goo.gl links" part of that question. How do I get to see someone else's links?
studer··on Minecraft creator banks $350k a day, turns down job offers from Valve and Bungie
No, health care in Sweden is not solely financed through regional income tax. Large parts of the social security system are financed through payroll taxes and corresponding mandatory contributions from self-employed people (the latter is called "egenavgift" -- feel free to Google it).

But looking again, he's in fact born before 1983, which means that he has to pay pension contributions as well, bumping the total contribution up to nearly 30%. In addition to income tax, that is.

studer··on Minecraft creator banks $350k a day, turns down job offers from Valve and Bungie
Public health care doesn't mean that nobody pays for it. Since he's not employed by anyone else, it's part of the ~15% in mandatory fees that he'll end up paying in addition to the ordinary income tax.

That's not how currency exchange rates work...

His company (Mojang Specifications) is a sole proprietorship, so the tax situation is interesting (i.e. most of it is taxed as personal income, and Sweden has a progressive tax system, and he has to pay insurance contributions as well). I can understand why he's scrambling to establish a real company :)
studer··on Planning is overrated. The best performers seesaw between ideas and actions.
Ok, I can see why it may be fun to counter something that partially reads like a personal attack on Magaziner with something that's definitely a personal attack on Peters (insert discussion about HN as a forum for spectator sports here), but do you also disagree with the argument about planning vs. doing that he's actually making?

studer··on How to get a job at Google, interview questions & process
The post you're referring to is here:

http://googleresearch.blogspot.com/2006/03/hiring-lake-wobeg...

and the argument is that you should try to "only hire candidates who are above the mean of your current employees", rather than just hire people better than the worst you have.

I find the part where he talks about hiring for project vs. hiring for the company a bit more interesting.

studer··on Giving up on Google
Hmm. I just searched for it. 46,100 hits. Not a UITableView within sight.

Are you sure you didn't mistype? If I type in USTableView, it shows me two UITableView hits at the top, before the exact matches.

studer··on The future of R - pessimistic thoughts by R founder Ross Ihaka
Given that numpy/scipy is basically a collection of C/C++/Fortran primitives, chances are that you managed to write a program that spent very little time actually computing things, and a lot of time doing something else.

Not sure what that could be, though; even low-level algorithms usually run 10-100x slower than C speed if naively coded in plain Python, so a 30000x slowdown using a specialized library sounds rather odd. I assume you checked for memory leaks and swapping. Did you do any profiling?

studer··on How the opening scenes of Blade Runner were made (video)
As someone pointed out over at MetaFilter, a big part of the realism of that scene is thanks to a solid understanding of how cameras, lighting, and film work and interact, rather than super-detailed modelling. Trumbull is a photographic effects wizard, but he also had 80 years of earlier work to build on. I'm not sure we're quite there yet when it comes to CGI.
