strombofulous··on This year’s insane timeline of hacks
> If you are young and wanting a promising trade in tech, security would absolutely be a good choice.

If AI is capable of performing these attacks, what would stop AI from replacing the security engineers?

strombofulous··on Canadian military will rely on public servants to boost its ranks by 300k
> not a single person I grew up with is doing well

What is happening in Canada to cause this?

Those kernel mode drivers operated in a way that would not bring down the entire system if they crashed
strombofulous··on Microsoft technical breakdown of CrowdStrike incident
Sure, but my question still stands - would this have happened if the EU had not made that ruling?
strombofulous··on Microsoft technical breakdown of CrowdStrike incident
Would this still have happened if the EU had not ruled against Microsoft?

strombofulous··on Why will my device lose access to Libby & OverDrive April 15, 2024?
Unfortunately this installs it as a user cert and only works for app that explicitly request it. To work everywhere you need to install it as a system cert which requires root

Interestingly ios (which is generally more locked down for dev stuff like this) allows users to install certs for all apps without jailbreak

strombofulous··on TikTok users bombard Congressional offices over bill that could ban app
Yes, well, this is a story about American senators being contacted by their American constituents about an American bill that will affect how Americans interact with this app while in America. So it is a bit relevant here
strombofulous··on Private company landing on the moon today
This reminds me of countries who send pregnant women to antartica to (somehow) strengthen their land claims: https://medium.com/good-to-know/why-11-babies-have-been-born...

Like antartica, I'm sure someone with guns will tell us who really owns the moon as soon as it actually becomes relevant.

strombofulous··on What happens when you trigger a car's automated emergency stopping?
Assuming you don't get in front of the car in front of you, wouldn't the maximum efficiency gain be one car length?
strombofulous··on Ask HN: Does Cloudflare block HN comments if you have code blocks in a reply?
Yes, although it requires configuration https://developers.cloudflare.com/ssl/get-started/
strombofulous··on Japan to crack down on Apple and Google app store monopolies
This is incorrect, if you distribute an app outside the play store you do not need to use their payment system, even by the letter of the law. The rule specifically applies to play store apps. It's common for developers of more technical apps (like VPN apps) to publish two nearly identical versions - one to the play store that doesn't support iap and one to f-droid/their website that takes payment via credit card.

It's possible the people writing this complaint may be referring to the fact that you can't link to or reference those options from the play store edition of the app, but I think they might just be misinformed.

strombofulous··on YouTube slows down video load times when using Firefox
By the way, it is 480p. 420 is for something else :)
strombofulous··on Why TSA's Implementation of Facial Recognition Is More Dangerous Than You Think
The slippery slope argument is a pet peeve of mine. It is a real, valid concern - in fact when this strategy works people often switch to calling it boiling the frog, which is not usually contested for some reason (even though it is the same thing)

Slowly making changes is a normal strategy at this point, saying anything less than the worst case is a "slippery slope" is no longer relevant imo. It is a valid risk that should at the very least be a point of discussion

strombofulous··on In 1886, the US commissioned watercolor paintings of every known fruit (2019)
It's not hard to repair these sorts of things with a little glue.
strombofulous··on HubSpot Acquires Clearbit
Unfortunately, there aren't enough beaches to go around, so we will still have to pick winners and losers
strombofulous··on Copying Angry Birds with nothing but AI
https://twitter.com/javilopen/status/1719363669685916095 is relevant

> Although the game is just 600 lines of which I haven't written ANY, [coding the game] was the most challenging part

Not quite hello world, but not too much more difficult than a shopping list. The really impressive thing to me is you can make angry birds with just 600 loc (and a couple libraries)

strombofulous··on Ask HN: Is the market bad, or am I having the worst luck job hunting?
Worse than the dotcom burst?
strombofulous··on Teddit Is Shutting Down
Me too, I intercepted the network requests and rewrote the key and token (and user agent ^.^ I wonder if any reddit admins here would recognize it...) in the request to access_token, or whatever the endpoint is idr

Assuming you are on android since you patched the app. Did you manage to do it without data loss? It's annoying to turn on httpcanary every time I launch rif.

strombofulous··on Google to explore alternatives to robots.txt
AI!
strombofulous··on ‘Breakthrough’ obesity drugs that have stunned researchers
Is it? Isn't this exactly the outcome you'd hope for?

Individual consumers pay basically nothing and companies are still incentivized to innovate and create new medicines

strombofulous··on Colorado ski town fielding dozens of automated 911 calls from iPhones
My first thought was that more people were able to contact 911 because of the new satellite feature
strombofulous··on Apollo Layoffs
There aren't any major US holidays in the first few months of the year (which is only 2 weeks away)
strombofulous··on Globalstar SEC filing, Apple to use 85% of its satellite network capacity
During the announcement apple mentioned that this comes with iphone 14 for free for 2 years. So possibly apple just thinks there's huge opportunity for growth here
strombofulous··on America’s bad bet on sports gambling
> it is fun trying to find lines that have positive expected value

I've never gambled before, does this happen often? I would have assumed gambling companies wouldn't offer any bets like this, since it implies their EV is negative.
