stepik777··on Microsoft suspends Windows 10 update, citing data loss reports
In this particular case files are outright removed, not moved anywhere
stepik777··on Coinbase Wants to Be Too Big to Fail
And how would miners convince most exchanges and services accepting bitcoin to use their own Bitcoin implementation instead of Bitcoin Core? Because Bitcoin Core and compatible implementations would just discard invalid blocks and ban everyone who broadcasts them. And after segwit2x fiasco I don't think miners will even try.
stepik777··on Wasmjit: Kernel Mode WebAssembly Runtime for Linux
> they probably just need some clear decisions around how to handle endian issues

They are handling endian issues by simply requiring little-endian.

stepik777··on Minih264 – Minimalistic, single-header library for encoding H264/SVC
Isn't ffmpeg's libavcodec a good decoding library?
stepik777··on Minih264 – Minimalistic, single-header library for encoding H264/SVC
Unless you cannot use GPL, I suggest to use x264 for encoding. It is simply the best there is. There is nothing similar to it.
stepik777··on Dear Moon
Time has changed. There is just too many information now - news, memes, TV shows, music, etc. And this is just another news in an ocean of other news. People are going to the Moon, cool, now lets check out what that Instagram celebrity that I'm subscribed to has just posted.
stepik777··on Firefox 62.0 Released
I'm also using Windows 10, 4K monitor, Firefox and GTX 1060 and have no issues. So your issue might not actually be related to resolution.
stepik777··on Napoleon Was the Best General Ever
> For instance, French Emperor Napoleon gained .49 WAR for his victory at the Battle of Borodino.

Yes he won that battle and probably all other battles in that war. But he has lost the war. Does it make him a good general?

stepik777··on Filament: Physically-based rendering engine
No it doesn't, it renders it as a bunch of spans. MathML is basically a dead standard for the web - browsers either don't support it or support is incomplete and with bugs which makes it useless.

stepik777··on It’s hard to have an unusual name in China
There are dozens of languages using Cyrillic and many of them have their own unique letters. That would be very hard.
stepik777··on It’s hard to have an unusual name in China
> choosing the standard Latin-alphabet language

And of course choosing the standard Cyrillic-alphabet language

stepik777··on Modern C++ for C Programmers: part 5
I.e. all the things you would get from a proper package manager if there was one for C++.
stepik777··on How ARKit 2 works, and why Apple is so focused on AR
It would be ok if it is voluntary - you can upload your face and choose what information about you is shown, not if someone scans the entire internet to collect as mush information as possible and make an app of that.
stepik777··on Researchers suggest that R.E.M. sleep serves to warm the brain
> it seems so inefficient to bring the entire computer online just to maintain its temperature

In what sense is it inefficient? In terms of energy 100% is converted to heat anyway

stepik777··on Show HN: Anon – A Unix Command to Anonymise Data
Why is it a UNIX tool? What makes it UNIX? Would it not work on e.g. Windows?
stepik777··on AV1: A new general-purpose video codec
> Surely AV1 would be infringing on at least some of HEVC's expansive patent pool

Yes, it probably would, but if these patents are owned by members of AOM it is not an issue

stepik777··on Lab-grown diamonds threaten viability of the real gems
Natural art?
stepik777··on Audio Adversarial Examples
What do you mean? How would it look like?
stepik777··on Exmo Bitcoin exchange chief executive kidnapped in Kiev
Ok, but why use a broken hash algorithm?
stepik777··on Exmo Bitcoin exchange chief executive kidnapped in Kiev
No, it wouldn't. First of all, it is obvious that there will be no consensus. And even if there was consensus it would be very challenging to do because deploying a hardfork takes time while criminal could transfer his money before the hardfork to a different address.
stepik777··on D’s Newfangled Name Mangling
Maybe it is just not a good technology. Just compare it to others:

C++ - memory unsafe, no GC.

Java - memory safe (by default), has GC.

Rust - memory safe (by default), no GC.

D - memory unsafe (by default), has GC.

Authors of Java solved memory safety by adding garbage collector. Authors of Rust managed to make memory safe language without GC while authors of D made a language with GC that is still memory unsafe.

stepik777··on The Problem of Colour
The RGB model that is currently used (sRGB) is just an emulation of CRT-displays, it is not how human vision works. There is not actually much conceptual difference between red and yellow.
stepik777··on The Problem of Colour
Yellow is about 575nm, while cyan is 490nm if this diagram is correct: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PlanckianLocus.png
stepik777··on The Problem of Colour
And what does this have to do with colors being spectral? If you look at the cie chromaticity diagram you can see that yellow and cyan have wavelength corresponding to them while purple does not.
stepik777··on Integrating “safe” languages into OpenBSD?
> large advantage

How is this a large advantage? When was the last time someone actually did this?

stepik777··on This Cryptocurrency Miner Says It Solved Bitcoin's Power Problem
> printing free money

How are they free? You need equipment and electricity.

> I have some otherwise very smart friends who are mining coins with GPUs

Do you want to say that mining is stupid? If you mine the right coins and hold them long enough for price to increase you can make a lot of money.

stepik777··on Software 2.0
So in 2017 he suddenly realized that visual recognition, speech recognition, etc are done with neural networks. How enlightening!
stepik777··on What is a Bitcoin fork?
> the value of my original coins drops by the difference in value compared to the new coins (or around that).

Prices of cryptocurrencies are very unstable even without any forks, so what you are describing doesn't make any sense.

stepik777··on Segwit2x Bitcoin Fork Suspended
> The "New York Agreement" was a blog post, it was never a legally binding and enforceable contract.

More important is that those who signed simply have no power to change Bitcoin.

> There's a strong argument that the "agreement" was designed to fail, as it's hardly a compromise when party A gets what they want immediately, but party B has to wait.

Yeah, especially when party A doesn't even sign any agreement.

stepik777··on Segwit2x Bitcoin Fork Suspended
Big blockers made an agreement among themselves, what did they hope for?
