My day job is to download random programs suggested by people I haven't met before, and post "hot takes" about them on the Internet.

Opinions are those of Gilgamech Technologies.

> Likewise, one of the biggest pests in business is the carbon copy—the fellow who always says: “Yes, Mr. Wrigley, you’re absolutely right.”

Perhaps meaning: “Have it your own way, you old buzzard, what do I care!”

Business is built by men who care—care enough to disagree, fight it out to a finish, get facts. When two men always agree, one of them is unnecessary.

- William Wrigley Jr., 1931

> Do you have any opinions that you would be reluctant to express in front of a group of your peers?

It's been said before that if you're not risking downvotes, you're not contributing to the conversation.

It's important to maintain relationships with people who, while they may not respect all of your opinions, at least respect you, and understand why you hold those opinions.

Times change, trends come and go, but humans are largely the same today as before we invented the Atlatl[∆].

There's Ayn Randism, and there's 20% time. These have wildly different utility to society.

stephengillie··on Autism is under-diagnosed in women
A common theme seems to be the feedback loop of attention from other people - from being unable to handle, to not being able to perceive, to seeking too much.

How about "Anecdotes from adult women who were recently diagnosed with Autism"?

> Understanding whether antimatter obeys the same laws of gravity as matter is an important step toward confirming whether decades of theory surrounding antimatter stand true.

As sung by Tom Jones.

Not irrelevant, just not tracked. In a Bayesian sense, we're using water, but we don't know how much.
stephengillie··on On Cash
Every cannabis store has at least 1 ATM inside, and a common transaction involves a trip to the ATM. When the ATM goes down, the store basically shuts down - they have to send people down the street to the nearest ATM, and some customers of course just goto another shop with a working ATM.
stephengillie··on High Crime in the Cocaine Industry
> Because more than 500 kilograms of leaves are needed for just one kilogram of cocaine, requiring almost two hectares, vast plantations are essential for production in any serious volume...

How much water does it take to produce a kilo? This seems like a much less environmentally-friendly vice than cannabis or even tobacco.

It says a lot about the state of HN's community that this post is poorly received, while posts supporting cocaine use are seeing more support. This used to be a techie playground; between comments in the heroin thread yesterday[∆] and in this thread today, now HN seems like a druggie haven.

stephengillie··on The Reason We Haven’t Directly Detected Dark Matter
Think of 4 dimensional spacetime as an oddly-shaped rectangle, which is much wider at one end than another. Maybe more like a pyramid with the top bit missing. All of matter and energy started as an explosion at the narrow end, and is traveling across towards the much broader end. The expansion of the universe is merely the expansion of the barrel, and the dark energy spreading apart the universe is really the slight trajectory differences caused by the shape of the charge that started the process.

To me, it's like 3d canon shot flying down a 4d barrel.

Or trace the worldlines of these particles. Any given point in time represents a 3d slice of the 4d pyramid-rectangle.

Remove a wall that separates them. In college, I rented in a house with a toilet in the hallway. Because the landlord took the bathroom door away, and cut a hole in the wall to the other bedroom, so the bathroom became a hallway.

For about a year, I smoked cigarettes. Taking a smoke break with your boss, and their boss, is one way to be noticed, stick out from the pack, and advance your career. Other methods are healthier.

"Luxury" is a normative term, a qualifier. Utility - how useful it is, it how many problems it solves - gives a more positive, quantative measure.

Not always, but you're right it's uncommon for cars to appreciate in value. And yes it does stretch the analogy pretty thin.

This sounds like the same situation as the music industry, bundling in an album 12 songs you don't want, along with the 2 you do want.

Or newspapers, where you pay for the 4 sections you won't read, along with the 2 you do read. Or streaming services, paying for the thousands of shows you won't watch, along with the dozen you do watch.

stephengillie··on Short sellers are good for markets
The analogy still works - you would just extend the car rental. And yes, sometimes short sellers do lose money on this transaction.
stephengillie··on The Reason We Haven’t Directly Detected Dark Matter
The problem is that gravity, like EM, follows an inverse-square rule. If gravity had a 4th dimensional component, we would expect to see an inverse-cube situation. The equation is: 1/(1-dimensions)

> By seeking out overvalued assets, short-sellers help rein in animal spirits and prevent bubbles from forming.

Suddenly this article takes an unexpectedly spiritual turn. What are these "animal spirits" and how do they influence markets? It's reminiscent of the Animal Spirit Guide that helped Chakotay in Star Trek Voyager[0]

Why should a a highly-paid engineer spend a few dollars, when they can spend the time-equivalent of dozens of dollars to not pay?
stephengillie··on Short sellers are good for markets
Shorting a stock is like renting a car for a year - then selling the car, and still paying rent. At the end of the year, you buy an identical car for a lot less, and give it back to the car rental company. Cars are fungible in this example.
stephengillie··on How Bad Is It to Forget Someone's Name?
Just as some people have great technical aptitude, others (I believe) have great social aptitude. While memorizing acronyms comes naturally to some, memorizing faces comes naturally to others. And the other group must work harder to compensate and keep up.

I'm concerned about a loss of empathy due to drug use. Over years of drug use, neuroplasticity could cause a permanent reduction in the capacity for empathy, and concern for other people & society at large.

It's like CBT but in reverse.
