stefan_kendall··on Basic Income Means Basic Freedom
If you're going to add footnotes, you probably shouldn't be citing wikipedia.

Capitalism is a system whereby "capitalists" (people with capital) use their capital as investments in business ventures. The person who risks the capital (the capitalist) has control over the outcomes of the business. You can have free markets without capitalism, and capitalism without free markets.

"Economic injustice" has nothing to do with anything. If you don't have capital you can't be a capitalist.

stefan_kendall··on Basic Income Means Basic Freedom
Socialist reductionism always works for me, although never as I expect.

"Health is important. Doctors should be free, right?" - Yes.

"But what about housing?! People can't just freeze to death. So housing should be universally free for everyone, right?" - Yes.

"Clothing is just as important as housing. Clothing?" - Yes.

"And food? You can't live without food. Universal free food?" - Yes.

"And without access to technology, you can't get a job, so surely the government should provide computers and phones. Otherwise people have no chance of rising out of poverty. Universal technology?" - Yes.

I'm pretty sure no one has ever gotten the point, and I've only turned half-hearted socialists into full-blown socialists. Oh well.

stefan_kendall··on Basic Income Means Basic Freedom
There was a time before welfare, and men and women didn't fall dead in the streets of hunger in droves.
stefan_kendall··on Amazon takes away access to purchased Christmas movie during Christmas
Well. I think it's time I stop checking legit outlets before going to piracy.

So much hassle. So much bullshit.

stefan_kendall··on S.F. tech companies' civic image at stake as backlash grows
I'm not sure a starbucks employee could have afforded to live in SF for the past several years.
stefan_kendall··on My run-in with unauthorised Litecoin mining on AWS
Possibly because it would cost the FBI orders of magnitude more than the damages to investigate.

The damages which amazon will likely refund.

The FBI does not target petty thieves.

stefan_kendall··on Why Silicon Valley hates the homeless
Upvoted for "cockwafflery".
stefan_kendall··on Bicycle Helmets and the law: a perfect teaching case for epidemiology
Are you truly afraid of stairs? Are you 85?
stefan_kendall··on Universe May Have Been Around Forever, According to Rainbow Gravity
Unlikely but possible. Much like the creation of a universe, perhaps.

Given infinite time, you might flip heads a million times in a row.

stefan_kendall··on Dan Ariely: At $61K a Year, College Is a Bargain
Most of my graduated friends have service jobs, or at best, low paying career related jobs.

Learning to weld is more valuable than college for many people.

The most valuable thing I did in college was work on my own projects and work an internship.

I had my degree delivered to my parents house. It's in a drawer somewhere for their sentimental value. It represents lost years of my life.

stefan_kendall··on America is separating into peasants and scholar-gentry
NIT and basic income are "libertarian" ideas only in that they could eliminate other welfare instruments. This would not happen in practice.

Pure libertarianism not considered with pandering to socialists would not propose a nit or basic income.

stefan_kendall··on Protesters block Google bus in S.F. Mission
Agreed. San Francisco has an artificial cap on supply as demand continues to rise.

It doesn't take more than the first 40 seconds of an economics class to figure out what's going to happen to the price.

You can either decrease demand or increase supply. And good luck kicking people out of San Francisco.

(As a side note, if I worked for google I'd live as close as possible in Mountain View. But I'm not the nightlife type.)

stefan_kendall··on How to do a startup in your spare time
Write this article when you've succeeded and quit your day job.

When.

stefan_kendall··on How to do a startup in your spare time
I think "engineers" get more giddy about the tools than the job at hand. It doesn't matter what server configuration you have or what language you used if you don't have revenue.
stefan_kendall··on Airbnb says this man does not exist. So I had coffee with him
LLCs aren't double taxed. Or S-corps.
stefan_kendall··on No Man’s Sky Is A Huge Procedurally Generated Sci-Fi Exploration Sim
Uh, Don't Starve isn't generated. The world is fixed.

Pro-tip: You need rocks, and you need them fast. Get all you can in the south, and then move northeast for the large rock pile. From there, you need to figure out how to survive the stronger enemies.

stefan_kendall··on Ask HN: Senior dev, no degree – which countries may accept me?
I believe OP could mean emigrate alone or immigrate with an implied "to a better place than where he is." You emigrate from, and he didn't mention where he was from.

Or the difference doesn't matter, because any large group of English speaking people will only use the word "immigrate" exclusively.

stefan_kendall··on I will not hack on your codebase for free in an interview
Does work performed in an interview constitute work for hire? I wonder what the copyright implications are in the US.
stefan_kendall··on The lie of the API
APIs change out from underneath you. Code can't last forever, even with versioning.
stefan_kendall··on Amazon Prime Air
Yes, just like there are pirate cars that drive around looting UPS trucks.
stefan_kendall··on Amazon Prime Air
How do you return an amazon package left at your doorstep that isn't yours? How often does this happen?
stefan_kendall··on Amazon Prime Air
You can't fire a weapon within city limits in most (all?) cities in the U.S.

And you don't own the airspace above your land, or airplanes and helicopters could not fly.

And you don't just shoot at anything in the sky when you're out shooting.

And civil courts exist to fine you heavily for this sort of behavior if it does occur.

Why don't you just shoot at UPS vehicles for driving down your neighborhood streets?

stefan_kendall··on Amazon Prime Air
You must live nowhere near anywhere. My sky is plenty filled with buildings, airplanes, helicopters, and even the occasional hot air balloon.

You keep your taxes to yourself. I have a package that needs delivering in under 30 minutes by drone.

stefan_kendall··on The Power of a Pronoun
You might want to read up on the term "thoughtcrime."

Ben was an ass and very poorly represented the Node.js community. A "thoughtcrime" is a crime that is a crime because of the thoughts of the perpetrator.

stefan_kendall··on The Workers Who Bring You Black Friday
Every luddite fights technological improvement.

The hoe displaced farm workers. Machines replaces lots of farm workers.

Shipping containers destroyed the massive labor requirement and theft of the shipping industry. Several orders of magnitude of jobs destroyed.

People don't just wither and die; the efficiencies offered by technological change turn into new industries and higher quality of life for everyone. Would you really be better off if everyone had to farm or hunt their own food?

But hey, at least everyone would be employed.

stefan_kendall··on To my friends in the Node community
I find both "he" and "she" jarring. When there's no reason to use gender, it shouldn't be used.

It makes me think the author either 1.) does not have a strong enough command of the english language to use "they", or 2.) is trying to accomplish something by picking a gender explicitly.

stefan_kendall··on Fold the DOM like paper
IE is a cancer. If you can in any way justify cutting off support for IE, you do it. It's a real time and money sink.
stefan_kendall··on Soy's Negative Effects (2009)
Soy milk is absolutely not a requirement of any diet. In the scheme of human diet, it is a relatively new invention, so it absolutely cannot be a necessary staple of human diet.

Can the body process it? Sure. But your body can digest almost everything.

stefan_kendall··on Soy's Negative Effects (2009)
Anyone who carefully considers their diet likely has a lower incidence of heart disease than someone who doesn't because of noting food sources and caring about food. You could pick any arbitrary diet and draw similar large-scale conclusions.

The real data is when you consider two groups who consider their diet. The national average is absolutely not a control for meaningful diet analysis.

stefan_kendall··on String types are fine. How about your code?
You need a designer if you ever plan to internationalize. What you're doing won't work - you'll make nonsense phrases.
