steakscience··on A Script for Mark Zuckerberg
> We’ve taken our arrows through the years for lots of things that frankly aren’t our fault, but are rather the reality of being the primary communications platform for all of humanity, and humanity is flawed. I’m proud of the efforts we have made to ameliorate humanity’s worst impulses while enabling some of our best tendencies, including that desire to connect.

This is something I think Facebook has been unfairly attacked for. Yes, Facebook didn't do everything perfectly, sometimes they were negligent, but they did also try quite a bit (both financially and manpower-wise).

The reality is, anyone else would've failed the same way. The problem wasn't that Facebook was evil or negligent, it was that being the "primary communications platform for all of humanity" was always going to be impossible to moderate, and it was always going to turn nasty.

steakscience··on Mozilla Thunderbolt
Like any new Mozilla initiative, this will not exist in a year.
steakscience··on Cloudflare Email Service: private beta
Game changer
steakscience··on Lina Khan points to Figma IPO as vindication of M&A scrutiny
She was right. But Figma is a legitimate, profitable, and strong business.

The reality is most startups are not like Figma. They would make pretty bad businesses and their only exit strategy is to get acquired.

There's simply no way they could stand on their own legs and go public.

steakscience··on My new deadline: 20 years to give away virtually all my wealth
Where do I sign up?
steakscience··on Did Elon Musk Appear to Sieg Heil at Trump Inauguration?
I don't like Elon. But I think it's pretty clear he was awkward (same as the weird jump he did months ago)
steakscience··on The Origins of Wokeness
Even before the term "woke" was widespread, I noticed all my conservative friends would prefer to find the most ridiculous liberal woke example and mock it.

Rather than actually discuss policy or anything concrete, because they have nothing to offer.

steakscience··on I had to take down my course-swapping site or be expelled
There's a reason you wake up at 5:50am to copy paste course codes the moment registrations open up!
steakscience··on Tldraw Computer
I'm a big fan of Tldraw and the people behind it. The tech behind Tldraw is impressive and the people are great.

But they just seem to be churning out random AI demos?

steakscience··on Solaar is a Linux manager for many Logitech keyboards, mice, and other devices
It's so good in fact that I wish it existed for macOS so I wouldn't need to use the official Logitech crap
steakscience··on Bitwarden is no longer free software
Sigh. Every good thing dies huh
steakscience··on Who Owns Nebula?
But it is a 50/50 split, so I don't understand what your concern is.
steakscience··on Gnome Files: A detailed UI examination
There are many valid critiques of GNOME but this isn't one of them.

A split button is an accepted and widely used pattern.

steakscience··on TinyPod – Apple Watch case with scroll wheel
This is a better "lite" phone than all the current lite phones out there

It does very little, but also does all the essentials: maps, payment, music streaming, etc.

steakscience··on Jailbreaking RabbitOS
It's kinda funny all/most of the initial goodwill towards the Rabbit was purely because of the Teenage Engineering design.

I hope TE chooses their clients better in the future. The guy behind Rabbit is a known grifter.

steakscience··on Trump injured but ‘fine’ after attempted assassination at rally
All it took was one person with one gun.

I don't know why people are trying to make this a sign of a big societal trend about media outrage, etc.

steakscience··on Proton launches its own version of Google Docs
Seems like Proton is chasing the mythical customer that wants to run their company on the Proton suite (mail, calendar, drive, docs), because for some reason being super private is very important to the company.

I don't think this segment exists. Most companies' top priority is a no hassle and reliable stack (Google or Microsoft) and not one that is trying to catch up from a feature standpoint.

They should just focus on their main customer segment: individual users.

Incredible
steakscience··on Drug resistant bacteria found on ISS mutating to become functionally distinct
NASA still running Windows 7
steakscience··on Drug resistant bacteria found on ISS mutating to become functionally distinct
Space bacteria. Is it over for humanity?
steakscience··on I Lost Faith in Kagi
I wish Neeva still existed.
steakscience··on Kagi search reached 20k paying members
I wished Neeva was alive. Its search results were amazing.
steakscience··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
Every SV CEO has a "Sam Altman saved my butt during crucial incident X" story

steakscience··on The Death of Unity
Wouldn't this model be better?

Open source the engine and IDE, have inhouse teams and contributors working on it, ultimately it becomes the go-to for game dev.

Then, provide best in class cloud services for using Unity, all the game backend stuff, comms, etc.

Wouldn't this model work?

steakscience··on Gnome 45 to Break Extensions
My gripe with Gnome is it's almost not usable without extensions

People like to compare Gnome to macOS, but macOS is both more feature-rich and more customizable.

steakscience··on Alexandria: A minimalistic cross-platform eBook reader
There was a very good one, well-designed too, and Dropbox bought it. Then it just disappeared :(
steakscience··on Switching from Chrome to Firefox
The irony is Chrome feels less advertise-y than Firefox with its Pocket integration, Amazon suggestions, and god knows what else
steakscience··on NetMaker: Connect Everything with a WireGuard VPN
How is it 5x faster than Tailscale when Tailscale also runs on Wireguard?
