steadicat··on Shipping a Neural Network on iOS with CoreML, PyTorch, and React Native
The neural network is not for measuring how far off the time is, it’s for guessing where different trendlines in the charts should start and end. You could say it’s overkill, but as I mention in the article I wasn’t happy with the results I got using simpler math. Also I’m pretty honest about the fact that I used a neural network because I felt like it. :)

Check out this response for a different take on this: http://yieldthought.com/post/170830096265/when-are-neural-ne...

I’ve been subscribed to this issue since forever: https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/issues/22

Doesn’t sound like using OpenCL on iOS will be realistic any time soon. Am I wrong about that?

steadicat··on Shipping a Neural Network on iOS with CoreML, PyTorch, and React Native
Using the camera for taking measurements is a great idea. Deciding where to split the trendlines is a separate problem though. A different way to take the measurements wouldn’t change that. Would love to chat about ways of improving both. Shoot me an email!

Good point. I tried to use PyTorch’s cross_entropy function but I got this error: "multi-target not supported".
steadicat··on Shipping a Neural Network on iOS with CoreML, PyTorch, and React Native
It’s a great idea. I had it on the back burner. Wasn’t sure if it was worth the time for a relatively niche app. Now I’m thinking it might be worth doing just so I can write about it!
steadicat··on What Did 17th Century Food Taste Like?
I suspect this happens because what makes the original dish special is the delicate balance of local ingredients, expert skills, and local taste which evolved together over centuries. Take the dish to a new context, with different quality of ingredients and less skilled cooks, and you lose that balance. You then have to compensate by piling on other flavors – ideally popular local ones – to make the dish interesting again.
steadicat··on Long-Term Coffee Consumption and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease (2013)
I have 23andme, but their results are not very clear. All they say is “You have two variants associated with consuming more caffeine.” I’m unsure how to square that with the studies above. Do I have fast or slow metabolism? Do I have higher or lower risk of MI?
steadicat··on CKEditor 5: New approach to rich text editing on the web
Few people seem to know about Composition Events: https://w3c.github.io/uievents/#events-compositionevents

Using those, implementing IME should be relatively easy. The events tell you which partial characters to show, and which completed characters to insert.

steadicat··on The rich are hoarding economic growth
Another factor I don't see talked about is the increase in women's participation in the workforce. When wages were higher it was common to only have one breadwinner in the family. Today women are more likely to get a job (or two), which is bound to depress wages. The perverse effect of lower wages is that families are forced to take on more jobs than they did before, which depresses wages further. Not sure if there is causation between women's participation and wage stagnation, but logically it seems possible that this would cause a downward spiral. The more wages suffer, the more jobs/hours/years people are forced to seek to work, the lower the wages.
steadicat··on Why English is such a great language for puns
As an Italian native speaker I wholeheartedly agree. It's one of the reasons I love English more.

Not only does English have many more homophones, and nouns can be used as verbs and vice versa, but English also has a much higher “word density” (for lack of a better term). The vocabulary is larger, and words tend to be shorter. The combination of the two means that you can take any short word, and odds are many other words with completely different meanings are just one letter-change away. On top of that, pronunciation is very inexact, which means many vowels and consonants sound alike.

These things make English pretty bad for oral comprehension, but great for puns.

Not quite. ISO 216 paper sizes are designed so that if you split them in half you get the same ratio (1:sqrt(2), or 1:1.414). The golden section is so that if you take a square out from one side, you get the same ratio (1:1.618).

steadicat··on Typora – A cross platform markdown editor
What’s missing in most of these markdown editors (including this one), is the ability to copy the formatted document as clean rich text, for pasting into email and other apps.

For example, a simple document with a list gives you this very clean HTML if you “copy code”:

  <p>Here is an email with a bunch of lists:</p>
  <ul><li>
  <p>Item one</p>
  </li>
  <li>
  <p>Item two</p>
  <ul><li>
  Item three</li>
  </ul>
  </li>
  </ul>
But if you copy the rich text and paste into a contenteditable field, you get this (ugh):

    <div><p cid="c1" mdtype="paragraph" style="box-sizing: border-box; -webkit-margin-before: 1rem; -webkit-margin-after: 1rem; margin: 30px 0px 0.8em; width: inherit; position: relative; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: &quot;Open Sans&quot;, &quot;Clear Sans&quot;, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap; text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><span class="md-line md-end-block md-focus" cid="c6" mdtype="line" style="box-sizing: border-box; display: block;"><span md-inline="plain" class="md-expand" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Here is an email with a bunch of lists:</span></span></p><ul class="ul-list" cid="c23" mdtype="list" data-mark="-" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0.8em 0px; padding-left: 30px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: &quot;Open Sans&quot;, &quot;Clear Sans&quot;, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap; text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><li cid="c24" mdtype="list_item" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; position: relative;"><p cid="c25" mdtype="paragraph" style="box-sizing: border-box; -webkit-margin-before: 1rem; -webkit-margin-after: 1rem; margin: 0.5rem 0px; width: inherit; position: relative;"><span class="md-line md-end-block" cid="c26" mdtype="line" style="box-sizing: border-box; display: block;"><span md-inline="plain" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Item one</span></span></p></li><li cid="c33" mdtype="list_item" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; position: relative;"><p cid="c32" mdtype="paragraph" style="box-sizing: border-box; -webkit-margin-before: 1rem; -webkit-margin-after: 1rem; margin: 0.5rem 0px; width: inherit; position: relative;"><span class="md-line md-end-block" cid="c27" mdtype="line" style="box-sizing: border-box; display: block;"><span md-inline="plain" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Item two</span></span></p><ul class="ul-list" cid="c41" mdtype="list" data-mark="-" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding-left: 30px;"><li cid="c40" mdtype="list_item" class="" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; position: relative;"><p cid="c39" mdtype="paragraph" style="box-sizing: border-box; -webkit-margin-before: 1rem; -webkit-margin-after: 1rem; margin: 0.5rem 0px; width: inherit; position: relative;"><span class="md-line md-end-block" cid="c34" mdtype="line" style="box-sizing: border-box; display: block;"><span md-inline="plain" class="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Item three</span></span></p></li><li cid="c40" mdtype="list_item" class="" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; position: relative;"><div><span md-inline="plain" class="" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><br></span></div></li></ul></li></ul><p cid="c120" mdtype="paragraph" class="unholdable" style="box-sizing: border-box; -webkit-margin-before: 1rem; -webkit-margin-after: 1rem; margin: 0.8em 0px; width: inherit; position: relative; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: &quot;Open Sans&quot;, &quot;Clear Sans&quot;, &quot;Helvetica Neue&quot;, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; white-space: pre-wrap; text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"></p></div>

steadicat··on How Breakfast Became a Thing
For what it's worth, granola is heavily sweetened (with honey or maple syrup, which are effectively sugar).
steadicat··on How Breakfast Became a Thing
Do you eat a lot of sugar? I used to have pastries or cereal and sugar with my coffee at breakfast and sometimes throughout the day. Like for you, a skipped meal or snack meant headaches. I've since weaned off sugar and I can easily go many hours without eating or snacking. I no longer eat breakfast.

I suspect that the blood sugar spikes were addictive, i.e. my body desensitized and needed me to frequently consume sugar to keep my blood sugar level high.

Try gradually reducing the amount of sugar that you consume, and/or the total amount that you eat at breakfast, as well as the frequency of your snacks throughout the day. Eventually you should be able to do fine on two good meals a day and nothing else.

steadicat··on Opera for beginners (2001)
I wonder why the author does not recommend Mozart for beginners. I find Mozart’s operas to be much more accessible than the popular romantic ones. Not only is his music way catchier, but Mozart and and his librettists also do comedy like few others.

I find that most of my beginner friends tire quickly of the long, drawn-out, exaggerated drama and dramatic music of Italian operas (i.e. Tosca, La Bohème, etc.). Some comedy sprinkled in together with an interesting plot can keep newbies interested for much longer.

I would recommend starting with some of Mozart’s lightest and craftiest operas (e.g. Cosí Fan Tutte, The Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute). And of course, watch Amadeus first.

steadicat··on San Francisco May Let Bicyclists Yield at Stop Signs
Moving to the US from Europe one of the most striking differences I noticed was the near complete absence of yield signs. Where I come from (Italy) yield signs are way more common than stop signs at intersections (unless visibility is very poor). Also, traffic lights seem comparatively overused the US, even at low-traffic intersections. I always wondered why. Yield signs would be a cheap and convenient alternative to stop signs and traffic lights at low-traffic intersections with good visibility.
steadicat··on San Francisco May Let Bicyclists Yield at Stop Signs
And don't forget that a bike is least stable when starting and stopping, especially for unskilled riders. Having to come to a complete stop at every intersection can be more dangerous, not less, especially if there are cars approaching behind the cyclist: drivers are likely to roll through the stop sign themselves and pass the cyclist right as he is starting again.

steadicat··on Using Spotify to measure the popularity of older music
This is awesome. You kinda touch on this, but the main thing that jumps out at me is that there seems to be a very strong bias towards songs from the late 90s and early 00s. Do you think this is because Spotify’s main cohort is people in their late 20s to early 30s, who came of age, musically, during that time?

steadicat··on BPG Image Comparison
BPG does a much better job at smaller sizes: its artifacts are way less jarring than JPEG’s (they just look like smudges).

However, to my eye, Large is the only acceptable quality level on these examples, and at Large the difference between JPEG and BPG looks almost imperceptible. Considering the cost of polyfilling, I would stick with JPEG.

steadicat··on Are Christmas Lights in Series or Parallel?
That's not how parallel circuits work. The voltage is independent of how many devices are connected. That's how your wall plugs always provide 110V.

Edit: Sorry, I misread, I thought this subthread was about parallel circuits.
