stathibus··on Applied Category Theory Course
Please explain how you find it useful
stathibus··on Applied Category Theory Course
I think you're confused about what "applications" means to mathematicians
stathibus··on Applied Category Theory Course
Why is everyone here so obsessed with category theory? It has basically no useful theorems.
stathibus··on uBlock-Origin – 1.52.0
Nothing to do with ads but thanks for playing
stathibus··on uBlock-Origin – 1.52.0
Ads pay for the internet.
stathibus··on What do Big Tech engineers even do all day?
Of course you can find ways to make a big impact at a large tech company.

The criticism still holds that many people don't have a drop of real business impact, have no real desire to, and still make obscene amounts of money.

stathibus··on Learning Algorithms
There is a good reason this book doesn't exist.
stathibus··on If you donate to Wikipedia, they will suppress donation appeals for 1 week
They're so out of control. The wiki foundation has had money pouring out of their ears for over a decade, and their new initiatives impact wikipedia only very indirectly. Don't be bamboozled into thinking your 5 bucks is needed to keep the servers running.
stathibus··on We now believe that the game is over. LK-99 is not a superconductor
The UMD folks are some of the best in the business.
stathibus··on Run Llama 2 uncensored locally
classic neckbeard take
stathibus··on Run Llama 2 uncensored locally
The mapping from latent space to the low-dimension embarassing/correct/offensive continuum is extremely complex.
stathibus··on Turns Out There's Another Problem with AI-It's Environmental Toll
It would be great if all these people trying to make a career out of sustainability would actually work on solving the problem instead of just complaining about it. The environmental cost of data centers is common knowledge already and the call to action at the end of the article is "idk think about it I guess". Even the scientist they interviewed had no recommendations.
stathibus··on LK-99: The live online race for a room-temperature superconductor
One of the themes of the movie that gets repeated over and over is "these boneheads who draw equations on whiteboards but can't follow security rules are literally the most important people in the world."
stathibus··on Unesco calls for global ban on smartphones in schools
Parents can't just get together and decide that their 14 year olds are going to be friends.
stathibus··on “The days of using untyped languages on non-trivial projects are over.”
Much simpler explanation - php and js are both terrible languages.
stathibus··on Boston mayor announces residential conversion program for office buildings
No amount of ridership or city tax revenue would make the MBTA solvent. It's a sinking ship that is beyond rescue without massive federal intervention. Nobody in MA wants to say that though, because it's an admission of failure.
stathibus··on Trip report: Summer ISO C++ standards meeting in Varna, Bulgaria
Lucky for us regular people, almost all of the features added after C++11 are completely ignorable, including everything in this trip report.
stathibus··on Reddit CEO says company is 'not negotiating' on 3rd-party app charges
Reddit is a for-profit company that attracted its user base by pretending to be a public good. Now they are behaving like a company and the users are mad about it. Maybe they will be mad enough to fuel an alternative that truly is set up like a public good, but I doubt it.
stathibus··on Closures hitting San Francisco, vacancies and fears of crime are on the rise
"Fears of crime" and also crime...
stathibus··on Pinball is booming in America, thanks to nostalgia and canny marketing
I'm nostalgic for windows space pinball
stathibus··on Dave Chapelle rails on San Francisco at surprise show
Seems like a low blow, is there anyone left to even defend SF?
stathibus··on Pcast Working Group on Generative AI Invites Public Input
I don't envy anyone trying to design policy boundaries for technology that nobody understands.
stathibus··on 80% in Japan oppose tax hike plan to cover defense outlay: poll
It makes sense to me, there is nothing that any Japan sized military force could do to deter a China sized one, the only lever they can pull is diplomacy and economic pressure. I can also see why Japanese citizens would not want to spend more on a military force to fight in a conflict over Taiwan.
stathibus··on Is Using ChatGPT Plagiarism?
If the product is presented as your own thoughts, words and ideas but they came from chatgpt, then you're a grifter and at the very least you've overrepresented your expertise. Whether it qualifies as plagiarism is just semantics.
stathibus··on Ask HN: Does Chat GPT and Code interpreter signal end of Data science?
No?
stathibus··on Nintendo reportedly issues DMCA takedown for Switch homebrew projects
There's no chance these tools would exist if they didn't enable piracy. Almost nobody would care. The other applications are excuses we hide behind.
stathibus··on Nintendo reportedly issues DMCA takedown for Switch homebrew projects
I would like to remind everyone reading this that we're mainly talking about playing certain video games without paying for them.
stathibus··on New York to ban natural gas, including stoves, in new buildings
Some are, and some of those even live up to their temperature rating, but they are subject to wind chill and can also fail due to ice and snow build-up, so its not as good as it sounds.
stathibus··on New York to ban natural gas, including stoves, in new buildings
Everyone is worked up about losing their gas stove, but natural gas heating is far more reliable and efficient than any electric option right now. This will create a lot of issues until heat pumps catch up. Northern New York is very cold.
stathibus··on Dropbox to reduce global workforce by about 16%, or 500 staff
The AI thing is transparently a fake excuse that will pass the sniff test for their finance department.

Also, what were these 500 people doing anyway? Dropbox has basically been the same product for years.
