srvmshr··on EXP TV – endless stream of obscure media and video ephemera
This is the closest I would get to watching Rick & Morty's Interdimensional cable TV :)

Interesting concept!

srvmshr··on Apple stole $100s from me, Customer Service says there's nothing they can do
I have never encountered this personally, but helped a few. There could be variations of what to expect, in response to your question. YMMV:

* If using the Web UI, it will be locked & probably will remain in some catatonic state, until Apple restores or purges its contents. The ID will not be reissued to anyone else, so it is a safe assumption no one will get any email, notes or photos that belonged to you. Apple support page will still be available in many cases (and probably the only thing) when you try logging-in

* On your device, syncing will stop. Local content will remain. Shared albums might disappear or seem broken i.e thumbnails will be visible but suspended account will not be able to fetch data. App purchases will stay but updates will probably be infeasible. iCloud dependent document access will definitely be broken.

srvmshr··on Space junk: India says object found in Australia is theirs
I am puzzled & maybe someone could throw light:

The canister looks like metal, and isn't airtight anymore. It has barnacles on one side, which makes it likely it was probably floating, rather than sitting on the seabed.

How did it manage to float so long without sinking? It looks structurally compromised from the photograph.

srvmshr··on The Transformer Blueprint
Francois Flueret primarily used TikZ, going by several TikZ queries over past few months on Twitter.
srvmshr··on Threads users down by more than a half
I tried using Threads religiously for few days alongside Twitter:

* The feed is chaotic & no guarantees people (and by extension, Topics) whom you followed will show up primarily. Seeing a machine learning thread between a Barbie post & scantily clad influencer is bizarre.

* The feed is jumpy with tiny accidental refreshes. You could be reading the thread and do a deep dive, and come out to find the timeline slightly/significantly different.

* No message/DM. No bookmark feature. No topic suggestions - Just pure Instagram-like scrolling.

The good part is no ads. But that could be a matter of time. Overtaking Twitter in engagement will be hard. Social networks have some inertia & needs some key users to remain successful (I forget the paper name - but it describes growth/implosion of network graphs when some key community members used/left. Like a hole in the graph. If any HNer knows about it - It came about 7-8 years ago.)

> I'm not sure I comprehend the immediate attacks (2/3 comments now) for, what appears to be, some neat research

I _dont_ have a problem with Roblox. FWIW I never used any of their product. I _dont_ have objection if HN discussed any of their papers published in SIGGRAPH specifically.

I _do_ have an ideological problem about a general blogpost announcing their corporate presence at conference <X> being promoted here on HN. If it was Google or Meta doing the same, my reaction would be 100% the same. Such low effort corporate advertising should not belong here. BTW, Google Meta MSFT all have such posts - and with good judgement (with the company of folks here), HN people don't post them

srvmshr··on How can AI help with climate change? A conversation with MIT's Priya Donti
This article's first half was a general discourse on ML & the latter half seemed to revolve around how chip thermals & data center consumption can be managed by ML.

ML's contribution to reducing human-generated impact on climate isn't the prime focus of this talk. And that carbon footprint management is (as you might guess) miniscule in grand scale.

srvmshr··on [dead]
This is blatant advertising/shilling for the company at a said conference. Why are such posts not flagged yet. Please do, by all means!

Almost all serious players are present at major conferences & announce that in their blog/social accounts. Pick {Google, Meta, Microsoft, Snap, Netflix, ...} and they are present in {Neurips, ICML, VLDB, HOTCHIPS, Supercomputing ...} with <N> accepted papers.

How is this presence any different to make it worthy of HN mention?

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
> but I don't think it's so plainly unbelievable that the government can't keep secret projects under wraps.

Rare triple negation. Also, I couldn't follow the last bit. Were you saying that basically what we imply as dazzling mind boggling technology is a top secret projects waiting to be unveiled / discovered?

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
> I literally pointed you to a kaggle file of reports from a major UFO reporting organization.

Kaggle competition is a supporting evidence for you?

> And with regard to Hindu UFOs, I was referring to Vimana.

Those were depicted as chariots mostly drawn by flying horses or elephants in Ramayana & Mahabharata. Unless you consider flying horses as aliens. Also, these were written as poetic verses with generous doses of imagination.

> Not sure what you expect me to present as far as evidence goes when my point is "there is a ton of dubious evidence, but evidence none-the-less".

Let me help by stating: There is a ton of dubious statements from many people which doesn't count as evidence (those testifying without shred of evidence to congress). More of he-said-she-said trust-me-bro. Hence why I asserted these aren't worth discussing anymore. And quoting them as support is not good faith in a scientific evidence-oriented discussion

There are conspiracy theories & then there are conspiracy dogmas group of people fall trap to & blindly propagate, much like religion. Then usual responses to reasonable scientific queries become topics of (1) our science isn't developed enough (2) godly metaphysics isn't known enough (3) reasons of alien presence/ absence/ ambiguity aren't clear enough - despite strong evidence to the contrarian opinion.

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
You provided an timeline of human evolution, but has fundamental physics changed at the core?

Unfortunately, we haven't found any drop-in replacement to Newton's first & second laws for e.g.; Conversely, more & more of physics is condensing towards established standard models proving that our model of universe is more definite. In the quantum space our research is mostly finding new interactions, not fundamental particles everyday. Energy & it transformations are the biggest truths eventually. To propel crafts capable of interstellar voyage, immense energy burst is needed for propulsion. We have seen no evidence of the kind of physics which will break relativistic models - and no material which can sustain the thermals in the process.

At the core of it, our chances to find another habitable world & intelligent species wherever they might be is rapidly reducing. Universe is expanding faster than previous estimated and probably double as old if you consider recent research. Our window of opportunity to establish contact passed probably before we came into existence.

It is like predicting we'll be able to detect God by advances one day. That supernatural being could exist - but most scientific evidence points to a hard no, given we already know it is a mental / emotional construction.

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
> It is. UFO reports come out of all of those countries. India has a religious tradition with very clear UFO references, and videos come out of China all the time (although they tend to be purposely faked 100% of the times I've seen).

I have lived/ been a citizen/ married to someone from each of these listed places. UFO reference in Hinduism is zero. I am practicing Hindu - I can vouch with 100% certainty. My wife is devout Buddhist/ formerly Christian & she confirms there is nothing in their scripture. I cannot engage any of these answers in good faith of critical thinking, as whenever there is a question of evidence, it is either trust-me-bro or it-is-classified

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
Yes. This. 100%

If I was the government exchequer and comfortably spending on the refrigeration of alien entrails & annually greasing their flying saucers, I wouldn't _additionally_ spend billions of dollars setting up space observatories like JWST, new radio wave telescopes & deep space probes to find evidence of life. At the least, experts from scientific community will be invited to investigate any material finds & that information will trickle out in tiny amounts. Scientific community deeply believes in replication at its core. It is impossible for everything to remain compartmental.

And acknowledging existence of alien technology only makes the position of a country more formidable, not less. Our global relationship is today less of muscle (like the past) & more posturing. By acknowledging otherworldly technology's existence but denying the details, US would be incredibly in advantageous position militarily. Why wouldn't they if they already possessed these technology?

We as human race may be spiteful to our brethren, but not stupid given the obscene expenditure of wealth and resources we dedicate annually in lieu of feeding & keeping everyone happy

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
So, what stops the US government from making this an elaborate psyops activity. Why should it be aliens _only_?

In an unstable world, where power projection is necessary & inevitable, it is a tactical move to neither confirm or deny existence of unparalleled technological edge. Create an elaborate story around unexplained IR camera observation. Potentially drop breadcrumbs & leave it ambiguous to project existence of superior otherworldly technology.

I believe most of us agree at this point, whatever proof publicly exists isn't incontrovertible - but ambiguous enough to be an umbrella for other top secret projects. Aliens aren't selectively choosing US - if you pause & think. And if that should not happen, evidence of similar standing should pop up elsewhere as well. The fact it isn't seen by India China Turkey Japan or any other sufficiently advanced military, is somehow not matching up with critical reasoning. (And many of these militaries actually do have strong public outreach just like US af-mil)

Leaving aside the military, clear photos have not showed up from the regular citizenry despite us having astrophotography capabilities in phones since sometime. The evidence or lack of it, isn't adding up

srvmshr··on Apple’s strict on App Store rules but gives WeChat a free pass (2020)
I use WeChat to talk to my in-laws in Mainland China. I am aware of the mini-apps that exist but they are severely lacking features & more of add on utilities to the WeChat interface.

For e.g. a popular one is a mini-app for DiDi cabs. It'll allow you to book a nearby cab & place a call/text using the WeChat integration. It is more of utility to WeChat/Weixin rather than an appstore within their app. Agreed it is somewhat borderline in definition, but the way I see it - the utilities and apps are sandboxed within WeChat ecosystem.

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
> All arguments of the form "where is the evidence" are moot at this point, as there is a mountain of evidence.

We haven't seen a single clear evidence yet. The objects captured from fighter jet IR cameras discussed in the past have also had explanation of lens flares and focal aberrations. True color image corresponding of the same event do not exist. No two accounts of unidentified activities are also same with inconsistencies one observes when people extend stories based on tenuous observation/experience

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
The celestial phenomenon over Nuremberg & Basel have been time & again discussed to be purported works of fiction. (This is also from a recent cursory literature review on the topic in JSTOR).

Summarily, many supernatural themed events were written by fantasy writers of those age to peddle to crowds outside their region. Those people have died, and the enigma forgotten - but these writings have found their way as proto-evidence of unusual activity from medieval times & now being used to support arguments.

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
I understand. But out of curiosity: why is there no material evidence across the different civilizations. Surely all of humanity couldn't be duping themselves and only US is speaking up in 21st century.

I am _not_ a non-believer. It is just the lack of scientific historicity and diversity of evidence that bothers me. I cannot reconcile that mountain of contradiction with the current testimony. It is one Congressional account of definitive existence, versus the absence of conclusive proof or material evidence anywhere else.

srvmshr··on Former intel officer says 'non-human biologics’ found at alleged UFO crash sites
In theory, maybe possible. But honest-to-god critical thinking/sincere question: given that multiple countries have had satellites, deep space observation methods, giant telescopes etc how is that alien ingress have never been noticed? Aliens couldn't have known that US/UK were the preferred destinations - countries with large surface areas like Australia, Russia, Brazil and India don't report such activities in general.

Why is that UFOs are coming up as pop culture topic just now in last few decades - and no concerted & corroborative evidence exists from medieval or prehistoric times (apart from some cave paintings where imaginations have been at play of superior beings).

Human race always had a creative tone to recording our history - we borrow philosophy, allude to existence of supernatural, and of God almighty. When it is about non-planetary life, definitive evidence _must_ exist all over the planet that we were visited - not just one country. Or am I being too cynical?

srvmshr··on Use multiple Git SSH identities on a single computer
Try really hard to fathom why OP would advocate easily breakable NPM/yarn clutter to an otherwise (and admittedly well designed long-standing) solution by ssh `config` and `-i` flag -- if at all not built by other language base e.g C++ Java

If there is a need to use separate identities, without trying to be pedantic, simplest means is via understanding the ssh tooling in POSIX compliant systems. Thinking of solving this everyday operational problem with JS/TS packaging is inventing a new operational problem. NPM might be great for desktop & web application dev, but I wouldn't consider the stability as rock solid - something I will trust my system tasks with.

srvmshr··on Ask HN: How to deal with 0.1X programmer colleagues?
I work at a small'ish company of few FTE (~10 members and handful of interns/ residents). I am basically the most senior non-C level member within a relatively flat management hierarchy (by design).

I handle a small corner of product development i.e. B2B 3D asset development from multimedia. Every weekly meeting my progress report is modest. You might bin me into that 0.1x engineering member.

Yet, I could tell you I remain quite busy. 33% of my time goes into product development. The other 67% are into quasi-employee management tasks (quarterly performance checks, their salary/bonus/increments, merging their code branches, keeping tabs on infrastructure), Capital generation (meeting investors, putting engineering-sensible business plans, correspondence etc) & PR (showing up at conferences, keeping updated with latest tech by reading papers, building professional networks to access talent/ investors/ experts on corp's behalf.)

If looking at purely my LOC, I probably add half or a third of the average guy right now. I know it could be better - and I keep trying to improve my IC role. But the message I want to let know is: A lot of things are going on without others being plastered with updates. And that happens with gradual seniority in org chart.

Do I miss my TopCoder days? Yes absolutely. Will I start doing that now? Probably not. Someone has to help run the engineering team. All that coding might is useless if we run out of workplace cohesion and investor money. And I am uniquely positioned to do that. I would like to see the team run rumbling along rather than few Usain Bolts sprinting in their chosen directions.

srvmshr··on What planes can you fly without a pilot’s license?
Why discriminate against diabetes. Of the things listed, this is probably the most common one & a lifestyle disease. This can have a onset in mid-40s to 50s for some genetically predisposed people. Are they not allowed to fly then?
srvmshr··on Show HN: I made a website that color-codes the world by language
OP does not list all the major languages either. I have a feeling that, just the four main southern languages & its dialects will outrank all northern European languages combined (except English technically)
srvmshr··on Show HN: I made a website that color-codes the world by language
This is interesting & its factually true from personal experience. I feel Norwegian is a sister language but bit more complicated than Swedish. Since they have similar roots, the grammar structure is same & it is easy to follow some degree of either. However, the foreign influence on Swedish over ages, has made it phonetically simpler.

The asymmetry exists, but ideas interchange easy enough because of common roots (except Finnish which sounds like Hungarian surprisingly).

srvmshr··on Microsoft Can Fix Ransomware Tomorrow
Software on Microsoft Windows uses an application programming interface (API) called "CreateFile" to access files. Somewhat confusingly, CreateFile not only creates files but is also the primary way to open them. Microsoft should rate-limit the CreateFile() API.

Going with scorched earth policy on everything & everyone, because it could slow down a chance ransomware event for a few, doesn't sounds particularly a bright idea.

srvmshr··on Aptos, our modern successor to Calibri
I loved the Segoe font that was introduced with Windows 8. The Aptos font looks a bit like a modern refresh of that. Clean aesthetics is a win anyway.
srvmshr··on Show HN: I made a website that color-codes the world by language
Almost the whole of Scandinavia speaks English as a second language, and yet English does not highlight any or the four countries. Most Scandinavian people might agree with this general observation that knowing little to no Nordic language can still get you by very comfortably in that region, although knowing the national language is a plus.

Second, China speaks Mandarin and Cantonese (not available), and several regions have no overlap (script could be same between them). I can understand some Mandarin but Cantonese is alien. That is true for their own people too. Chinese don't speak 'Macau'. I am not even getting into India at this point. That's completely chaotic.

This kind of infographic in broad strokes can sometimes be hurtful to some of the people. Not that I have any strong opinions but OP should know this.

srvmshr··on India's Chandrayaan-3 launches to explore moons water rich South Pole
Honestly I do not understand the subtle trolling here. If any country is making a big leap, without biases, just cheer for them. Getting to see humanity's progress, one country at a time, is a better thing compared to seeing none. When the highest populated country facing dozens of social issues, makes a space achievement at a tight budget, they deserve our pat on the back, not ridicule. Sure, they could be a generation lagging in the technology, but they are collaborating with other countries in aviation. Spacefaring is getting bigger, not niche. Comparing them to ESA or NASA is unfair given the gargantuan budgets they enjoy. There is progress and commendable one. Good job India! More miles to your rockets

By making comments like "poor country, donate money" and "Brits are sending money [...]" (actual flagged comments here) some of us are showing inherent racism. One world-one people, guys. It is really not that hard.

srvmshr··on An Introduction to Statistical Learning with Applications in Python
I actually like this book by Yoni Nazarathy

https://statisticswithjulia.org/

They have a book on Mathematics of DL too which has several of the concepts covered here.

(Disclosure: I am slightly biased towards this since I've known the author by online interactions)

srvmshr··on An Introduction to Statistical Learning with Applications in Python
This is an update to a very popular text which was originally in R. Professors Hastie & Tibshirani are leading educators in statistical learning. They also have a video course following these notes in Stanford Online. Very highly recommended if learning theoretical aspects of classical ML
