source99··on Fall snow, rains have 'satisfied the drought debt' in Northern Sierra Nevada
Maybe this SoCal Newspaper is trying to make it seem like NorCal has enough water to spare and send it South. Just a theory...
source99··on Ask HN: What do you keep at/on/in your desk?
I went on a small search to find the best notebook and thats where I ended up.

The features I wanted:

1. It had to be able to serve as a mouse pad 2. It needed to be wire bound on the side so that it could lay flat 3. It had to be thick enough but not too thick(subjective)

It took me many months and probably 2 dozen notebooks to arrive at this one.

It's worth watching the video just for the sound effects.
source99··on Ask HN: What do you keep at/on/in your desk?
Very specific notebook - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BNCM7G/ref=oh_aui_sear...

Very specific pens - pilot - G2

And then my usual setup - Macbook, Thunderbolt display, wired keyboard, apple mouse

source99··on Ask HN: How do you stay focused while it's compiling?
A few years back I was compiling hardware inside an FPGA. Typical "compile" times were 2-3 hours.

I used to read a book while waiting for compiles when I was in High School.

I have test suites that take 5-20 minutes to run and I do just about everything I can to cache data to bring that time down.

I feel your pain.

source99··on Ask HN: What should I do if I can't find any startup I'm interested joining?
I don't mean this in a negative way but aren't there thousands of jobs between HN and angellist?

If you can't find a job that inspires you maybe there is something wrong in one of your assumptions about either what inspires you or what it means to work a job.

I would definitely recommend applying to a few and seeing if anything sticks and then try to see if you enjoy the work.

source99··on Ask HN: What are the best resources to learn Python for Data Analysis
I tried to read books or even take a night course but nothing did the trick except: a real side project that required me to learn the proper tools and techniques. Turned into a full time job that I am really enjoying.

Now I am able to read the books because I desire the knowledge to further my passion.

source99··on Ask HN: Weekend wasted again
This is great!

I usually block sites in my /etc/hosts file. It's not a ton of work to unblock them but it's enough that when I go to facebook and it doesn't load more often then not I will alt-tab back to my editor or something productive.

source99··on Verifying Wikileaks DKIM-Signatures
Some quick numbers for those interested:

Excel sheet has 11104 rows 2423 verified - 22% 8681 not verified - 78%

source99··on Ask HN: I'm an old programmer, do I qualify for diversity consideration?
Swap out "at all how old you are" with "about your skin color".
source99··on Ask HN: Where do you go to read or watch neutral and unbiased news?
I try not to read news on the web.

I've gone so far as to redirect a bunch of news sites that I habitually frequent to 127.0.0.1 in my /etc/hosts file.

source99··on Ask HN: Where do you go to read or watch neutral and unbiased news?
They are a bit click-baity for my taste.
source99··on [dead]
What am I missing here?
source99··on Ask HN: What do you eat/drink during the workday?
Coffee around 8am. Not much else till I get hungry around 1:30. Then a zero carb meal. Usually some mix of avocados, cheese, meat, sardines.

Then a dinner consisting of meat and vegetable.

source99··on Restoring YC's Xerox Alto day 9: tracing a crash through software and hardware
If you are enjoying these updates I can't say enough great things about the Book Hackers by Steven Levy - https://www.amazon.com/Hackers-Heroes-Computer-Revolution-An...
source99··on Ask HN: What is your favourite stack for small personal projects?
How many people work on projects expecting them to only be small personal projects vs the start of the next big thing?
source99··on Ask HN: When are you considered a “senior” programmer?

source99··on Common Misconceptions About Applying to YC
How does alumni make a recommendation? If I know a few and reach out, what would I ask them to do?
source99··on Laser Scans Unveil a Network of Ancient Cities in Cambodia
Does anyone have any information on the software used to process the LIDAR data?
source99··on Ask HN: Is there a solution to the Bitcoin blockchain growth problem?
The blockchain is the history of every transaction. If transactions are purged then transfers from 1 account to another would dissapear from the history and it would essentially be like the transfer never happened.

I won't say there is no solution to the problem but purging transactions is not at the top of the list.

source99··on Announcing new tools, forums, and features
Nope. I was logged in. Guessing it was something else.

I like how I got downvoted for providing information...

source99··on Announcing new tools, forums, and features
Link goes right to 404 - Thats one heck of a new feature.
source99··on Restoring YC's Xerox Alto, Day 6: Fixed a chip, data read from disk
But wouldn't it be fun to build a raspberry pi based chip tester!
source99··on Restoring YC's Xerox Alto, Day 6: Fixed a chip, data read from disk
Why not proactively check all the chips to make sure all gates are working on each chip, rather than try to debug when something breaks?
source99··on Upgrading Autopilot: Seeing the World in Radar
What about a tractor trailer (like Florida) in the same spot as a white listed traffic sign?
source99··on Ask HN: How to deal with a founder that won't leave his job (maybe)?
You might check out the book/concept called Slicing Pie by Mike Moyer. It addresses situations like this.

The quick summary is to allow equity ownership to change based on work done for the company that is not paid out in salary.

Start with an agreed upon value of the company(example $100K). Everyone has an hourly pay rate.

So if you all do 10 hours and don't get paid your ownership percentage stays the same. But if 1 person does 100 hours of work and doesn't take salary and the other people do 20 hours and no one gets paid actual money then the overal value of the company goes up by 140 hours time pay rate. And your ownership percentage changes based on how many hours you contribute.

source99··on Google shelves plan for phone with interchangeable parts
Can anyone name other modular products in high volume production.
source99··on Google shelves plan for phone with interchangeable parts
Again, volumes won't ever be high enough to make this happen.
source99··on Google shelves plan for phone with interchangeable parts
Volume isn't high enough to get reasonable costs.
source99··on Google shelves plan for phone with interchangeable parts
Whenever I saw articles about this my first thought was always that it didn't make any sense. 1. Why do consumers need to decide what goes in their phone. Are my needs really different that someone else's? 2. Building hardware is hard. Building consumer hardware is really harder. Making it modular is just batshit crazy.

I never once thought this would see the light of day.
