source99··on Show HN: I built an app to block Shorts and Reels
I would love to build a small physical device at my home wifi router level that detects these network patterns (certain IP addresses and data patterns). Then blocks those network streams. I think the correct fix is to intermittently block them so that the user gets a small drip and don't realize its broken so they don't try to find a workaround like turning off wifi.

I would love to hear some stats on how many car/bike collisions happen every day in SF.

source99··on Important Coding Habits
I have a very similar issue and likely the same cause. What has helped for me: Cortisone shots (temporarily relief but not a fix), losing weight, core strengthening activities and switching to a standing desk 100% of the time. YMMV. 43yr old male, lifelong developer.
source99··on Venture Predation
There are two kinds of VC funded startups - Those that give money to customers and those that give money to employees.
source99··on Language models still struggle with the concept of negation
This is one of my favorite test cases:

Prompt: Here is a riddle. It is a common riddle but with some changes that make it more difficult. You are an alien that will live for at least 10000 years. You have no sense of temperature. you can not feel hot or cold. you have eyes and can see. you are in a house. downstairs are 3 light switches that control 3 light bulbs that are upstairs. Each light bulb will last for exactly 3 years. you can tell by looking at a bulb if it has burned out after 3 years. devise a strategy to determine which switch controls which light. ChatGPT 4 The standard solution to this problem involves using the heat generated by the bulbs, but since you as an alien can't feel temperature, we need to utilize the fact that these bulbs have a specific lifespan of 3 years. Here's a strategy:

Turn on the first switch and wait for 3 years. After 3 years, turn it off.

Right after turning off the first switch, turn on the second switch.

Leave the third switch off throughout this process.

Now, go upstairs to inspect the bulbs:

The bulb that is off and has burned out is controlled by the first switch. This bulb was turned on for 3 years, so it has reached the end of its lifespan and burned out.

The bulb that is on is controlled by the second switch. You turned this on right after turning off the first switch, so it's still functioning.

The bulb that is off and hasn't burned out is controlled by the third switch. This switch was never turned on, so the bulb is still in a brand-new condition.

This strategy ensures that you can confidently identify which switch controls which bulb.

I had to stop reading dice man. I just found it to be very depressing because of all the negative actions he takes.

source99··on An 'Exosuit' That Boosts Endurance on the Trail
I’m amazed/skeptical that science could add something to millions of years of evolution and make it more efficient.
source99··on Ask HN: The most useful Mac keyboard shortcuts?
The app witch lets you command-tab to switch apps but it lets you choose any open window of any app. So if you have 4 separate terminals and 3 chrome windows and multiple word documents open you can scroll to the exact one that you like
source99··on New Fast.ai Course: A Code-First Introduction to Natural Language Processing
Just my opinion but the fast.ai source code is very difficult to read.
source99··on Ask HN: How to leave my startup after my stock vested?
This is pretty spot on. I was on the receiving end of this and it’s incredibly challenging mentally to work hard to give away 40% to someone that just split. The comment about not being able to raise money is accurate as well.

Sell your stake for a fair value and wish the new owner luck. You could keep a few percent of stock but not enough to deter potential investors.

source99··on Ask HN: Where do you find contractors for non-technical work?
My recent experience: Upwork is the best. 99designs is decent. Fiverr is bad.

source99··on Calculating the mean of a list of numbers (2016)
Who has actually run into this in practice? Though I’m sure a few people have I doubt it’s more than .001% of programmers or programs. And those that do run into it are probably aware of the challenges.
source99··on Ask YC: How to pay payroll taxes?
Unless I misunderstand it looks like its $45/month. Which comes out to $540/year.

source99··on Widespread and sometimes drastic marine oxygen declines
Stop buying stuff. Eat less meat.
source99··on Ask HN: Tools for rational decision making?
I’m not saying I’m right or better but I feel like I have the opposite problem. I don’t do much research. I do the bare minimum to confirm whatever bias I started with and then just start executing. Usually works out well enough.
source99··on Ask HN: Best online courses for machine learning?
fast.ai is great.
source99··on Ask HN: Freelancers of HN, how do you automate cash management?
I pay for zenefits. I have my own company and I pay myself a salary and zenefits takes care of all taxes and government forms. It’s not that cheap (I think $400 for the year) but I never have to think or worry about forms or taxes until I file my full taxes at the end of the year with my accountant.
source99··on How to Grow Software Architecture out of Jupyter Notebooks
I’ve spent a fair amount of time architecting my software to be able to set a flag and instead of processing a full typical run lasting several hours of compute it processes a subset in minutes or seconds. It’s not as clean as a Jupiter notebook but it’s much more repeatable than working in a notebook.

I have a hard time maintaining discipline in a notebook and therefore don’t find them very useful

source99··on Ask HN: How do you evaluate a stock tender offer?
Find a middle ground that won’t let you regret your decision. I tried this once and felt pretty good about the results.
