soup10··on App Store Small Business Program
What an interesting new development, this generates tons of goodwill from smaller devs while sticking it to multimillion dollar companies that were pushing the hardest to get Apple to change their fee structure.
soup10··on Google illegally spied on workers before firing them, US labor board alleges
That's not actually what happened, Google, much like any company wants to hire people that are "good team players" "will be loyal to the company", "don't cause trouble", and "show gratitude for the opportunity given to them". So either you play the game or you have enough leverage to get special treatment(or you work somewhere else). They want good corporate drones, not individualists that protest when privacy rights are signed away.
soup10··on AlphaFold: a solution to a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology
It's kind of like a modern day Bell Labs where they have so much excess profit from adtech that they can fund lots of "basic research" or the computer science equivalent of that.
soup10··on Former Uber executive charged with paying 'hush money' to conceal breach
I think some judges would consider the power imbalance between employer and employee before legalizing invasions of privacy because the employee signed a disclaimer. Contracts that a weaker party is pressured or coerced into don't automatically clear the company/institution of wrongdoing.
soup10··on Cloudflare was down
Good guy cloudflare giving programmers an early weekend.
soup10··on Neiman Marcus files for bankruptcy
Because one of the principles of private equity is to load up a company with debt while growing the bottom line and then offloading it. When it works the banks profit, the company grows and everyone is happy, when it doesn't work they are vultures that made a bad situation worse.

Instead of painful downsizing and adjusting to actual market demand they will keep things floating until it turns around or the company is so far gone that nobody will lend to them anymore.

soup10··on Why Restaurants Are So Fucked
People are fine with making their own food. It has a big benefit in that you can make it exactly how you want. Restaurant food makes the most sense for things which are difficult to make or require expensive equipment or the most prep.
soup10··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2020)
When you ask for equity options they give you US Treasuries
soup10··on Tesla, Musk must face shareholder lawsuit over going-private tweet
The bad precedent is to let him get away with a slap on the wrist because soon enough you'll have ceo's left and right pumping and dumping on twitter whenever it's convenient.

soup10··on Tesla, Musk must face shareholder lawsuit over going-private tweet
Nobody forced Musk to run a highly leveraged company that will collapse on itself when it runs out of cheap financing. At some point the music will stop.
soup10··on Google bans Zoom from employees' computers
there is two narratives, which do you think is more likely:

1. Google is dogfooding it's own products to improve them and make them competitive and stop potential data/privacy/security leaks by using external software.

2. Google is trying to save 20 bucks

There is nothing wrong with Google docs or sheets and I have used them both. But sooner or later you make enough documents or work with enough spreadsheets you're going to want or need some feature that office has.

soup10··on Google bans Zoom from employees' computers
This isn't about the merits of excel over sheets, it's about employees coming on the board and lying to promote their company. Google makes 1.61 million in revenue per employee. Honestly it's only going to get worse, because if you see the videos of the company meetings, Sundar was always the super loyalist that would say anything to protect Google or run interference for senior leadership. And now that he's CEO they will start aping him.
soup10··on Google bans Zoom from employees' computers
Office is business productivity software. You don't buy it for every employee, you negotiate a license for the number of seats in use. It has way more features than google docs and is standard everywhere. It's like saying you could save money by having programmers write code on pencil and paper. You saved the money on the computer but you have a net loss because you lost the power and efficiency of real time editing, compiling and debugging. These corporate guys just drink the internal koolaid/spin from hr or whatever and come here repeating nonsense as if its fact and it annoys me. It's dogfooding with some minor privacy/security concerns since microsoft is competitor, we get it, just call it what it is and move on.
soup10··on Google bans Zoom from employees' computers
Can you guys stop astroturfing here. Nobody is dumb enough to believe that Google is saving money by not using office.
soup10··on Unity Learn platform free for three months
Nintendo and Microsoft have their own custom engines and toolchains for AAA games. Unity gets used for casual titles where teams are smaller, roles are less specialized, and high performance rendering isn't as big of a priority. (Not that Unity is slow, it's just behind the curve of Unreal and the custom engines of big studios)
soup10··on Microsoft apparently removing ‘Offline Accounts’ for international Windows users
Also its brilliant business because when cloud goes out fashion(as it does cyclically) they can sell the same software again 'redesigned' for standalone/local usage.
soup10··on No person who was born blind has ever been diagnosed with schizophrenia
Schizophrenia diagnoses are generally applied to individuals with a mix of behavioral problems and "abnormal or undesirable" thought patterns. It's a broad brush that isn't applied based on hard biological data like an MRI of the brain, but on observed and reported behavior at the discretion of the psychiatrist and rough adherence to DSM guidelines.

Typical treatments like Haldol, Thorazine, and Depakote have a blunting and depressive effect on the entire central nervous system. Treatments like shock therapy, cause severe memory loss and permanent brain damage.

These "treatments" are often paired with coercion, involuntary injections, confinement in psych wards, and court orders.

Many times LE will bring a civilian to a psych ward as a secondary or additional option to charging them with a crime. It's often seen as an additional tool in creating orderly communities, disciplining individuals that get out of line, and overall exerting control on society and free thought and action. Once a patient is admitted or diagnosed, they are strongly incentivized to align themselves and their behaviors to the values and expectations of the institutions and people that brought them there and control their release and treatment plans.

Even if schizophrenia had a biological signature it wouldn't be used in practice because they WANT the ambiguity and discretion to classify and medicate patients as they see fit.

soup10··on Investigating the Performance Overhead of C++ Exceptions
why would an error checking branch ever be mispredicted. more to the point why would error checking or exceptions ever be in an optimized inner loop.
soup10··on Why Google Did Android
This wasn't 'nonsense'... Google spent 12 billion on Motorola's mobile patent portfolio and Samsung lost half a billion in legal judgements. If they spent half that money innovating and improving mobile design instead of copying everything to the point of confusion from the popular market leader.. we wouldn't be having this conversation.
soup10··on Why Google Did Android
Android copied iOS design screen for screen, gesture for gesture, form factor, hardware and app design. It was not a 'well shucks' type move, it was 'copy everything and undercut them to get mobile market share at all costs'. They knew the lawsuits were inevitable. Samsung lost a 500M judgment and Google bought Motorola for 12.5 Billion to use their patent portfolio as leverage against Apple.
soup10··on Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent)
Billions are being made collecting data and content for free and publishing it along with targeted advertisements. Web-scrapers can collect that aggregated data and redistribute it or create competing services. This is terrifying to certain tech giants and threatens their moat's and lock-in/network advantage. They will lobby hard against it with PR campaigns citing everything from security, privacy, copyrights and all sorts of other exaggerated bogeymen. At the end of the day its mostly about preserving their monopolies though.
soup10··on Responsive Pixel Art
image is probably separated into parts and layers with logic on how to scale and morph and trial and error to make it look nice
soup10··on An Existential Crisis in Neuroscience
If you've seen some of the high resolution videos of neural activity captures from even simple fish, the slightest motor movements activate hundreds of thousands of cells in a chaotic pattern. Neural circuitry is not neatly laid out like a silicon chip, its a forest of inter-connectivity that resists analysis even with extremely detailed visualization and data captures.
soup10··on Finding Time to Invest in Yourself
Just anecdotally I've dabbled with giving employees more equity and it hasn't particularly energized or made them more productive. I think it depends a lot on the person, wether they have that business mentality to be patient and work hard for revenue growth down the road or they are more comfortable with weekly paychecks. Also the person needs to a be good fit for the business as well. You could give a person 5% of AMZN and they'd still never extra-ordinarily productive unless the challenges, skillset and interest were a match.
soup10··on Many games are held together by duct tape
it usually makes sense to start hacking and slashing towards shipping anyway since 95% games have a shelf life and aren't maintained and extended much beyond the original release. By the time the next game starts production there's probably major engine and platform upgrades to contend with and a different non-overlapping set of features to support so why bother with excessively clean well architected code that won't be re-used. (Of course this is somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy the state of the code-base influences business decisions with regards to what will be re-used and what the next game will be)

soup10··on Police Departments Are Using Swatting Registries to Protect Swatting Targets
I don't know what happened with mudge, but "welfare checks" where the person calling has ulterior motives for involving the cops in a situation are a common thing as well.
soup10··on Working for a startup makes less sense
>watching them get squeezed by big tech companies offering sky high comp fills me with glee.

Enjoy your new life as a corporate drone!

Note to the salty drones in the comments below: I started a business that was passively profitable for years and now pretty much just work on what interests me
