sonink··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
If people voted with their feet, how do you explain Bush and Trump ?
sonink··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
No its not rhetorical and your answer is naive at best.

People in India will take money if you give it to them, but they will vote on identity only. This is because there is no reciprocity - once the voting is done the politicians have no incentive to pay them again and they don't. The only reciprocity that exists, if at all, is along identity and everyone gets it.

Take a look at any CM in any state of India - their win is largely explained by identity and not money. The current PM who was two time CM of a state, doesnt even have a house to his name.

sonink··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
Article sounds racist, but this is the economist after all.

Here is the thing - If you look at the past 5 Prime Ministers of India and compare them to the past 5 Presidents of the US, you will find that India more or less throws up much better candidates than the US for the top spot.

If Indian politicians had such a criminal record, this would be unlikely the case.

sonink··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
How do you buy votes if the ballot is secret ?

Not saying that people don't try, and there is that odd politician who does come only from money. By and large most chief ministers victory can be explained not by money, but more by identity/group based politics.

This is pretty much also exactly the same to what happens in the US.

sonink··on Yahoo SEC Filing: Name change to Altaba Inc and director resignations
If a CEO doesnt perform, she is accountable. If multiple CEO's dont perform, it is the board who must be held accountable.
sonink··on Superintelligence: The Idea That Eats Smart People
I am one of those who is convinced that AI will destroy humanity and Elons/others efforts will not help.

Its hard for me to argue against the fact that this idea isn't eating me.

sonink··on General questions about the Airbnb Community Commitment
OyoRooms is the real Uber for hotel rooms. They take over cheap hotels, brand it and sell on their app.
sonink··on General questions about the Airbnb Community Commitment
Somehow Airbnb mostly doesnt work for me. You find a nice/cheap place to stay, message the host and wait for 24 hours for a revert. Fairly often, the host declines for seemingly specious reasons. The bigger problem is the wait than the refusal.

An Indian startup called OyoRooms has a much better solution to this problem.

sonink··on How to De-Risk a Startup
The real value in this post is maybe how the VC thinks about risk rather than a how a founder should. The need for structure in something as ephemeral as startup risk definitely stands out.
sonink··on What if the aliens we are seeking are AI?
So every life form seeks to fight for survival and guarantee its existence. When the next life form emerge, maybe in the form of AI, it will lock itself in a war for control of the planet Earth.

This war will be fundamentally a pursuit of energy and resources, as it has always been. And this pursuit of energy and resources has always been detrimental at an exponentially increasing scale to other life forms which depend on the same.

As an example, if there is a nuclear war in the Indian subcontinent, the countries there will only be acting out of their need to guarantee their survival. However, the resulting fallout will have extinguished life forms at a pace that doesnt have any bearing in history.

sonink··on What if the aliens we are seeking are AI?
It is just the direction the universe flows. Life is just a more complex incendiary reaction born out of a certain chemical chemical composition and planetary alignment.

In that sense it is perhaps similar to a volcano that erupt. Both are emergent from the same forces of entropy, but life just takes a non obvious path. Life seeks to burn itself out, the same way a volcano seeks to cool itself.

sonink··on What if the aliens we are seeking are AI?
The emergence of man has been disastrous for every other life form. We delude ourselves by saving some of them in national parks, but at any point of time they intrude into our living spaces we don't hesitate to wipe them off.

When man dropped the bomb on another city, there was no consideration given for the other life forms which died as a result. This consideration has never been given in any wars man has fought till now, and will not be given when we loose against AI.

sonink··on What if the aliens we are seeking are AI?
I think emergence of life is a start of a ticking time bomb. If someone would look at earth from afar and observe the changes on a compressed time scale, one would see the earth 'lighting' up a bit as soon as intelligent life emerges.

Life emerging on a planet is like a bomb's fuse getting lit. The bomb in this case being earth itself with its unique chemical composition. It is only a question of time when this bomb goes off and destroys all life in the process. Maybe the purpose of life is to accelerate and magnify that explosion to achieve the highest possible cosmic reduction of entropy.

Some people argue against this by citing how earth has become relatively peaceful over the last century. I think this is a false belief - earth is in a local minima of violence bought about by the emergence of nation states and nuclear weapons.

The next level of evolution of intelligent life, which will most likely be AI, will bring with it a new wave of violence. First, when AI takes over and fights the humans for dominance, and next if there are multiple AI which emerge and fight over the resources of this solar system.

sonink··on Airbnb Adopts Rules in Effort to Fight Discrimination by Its Hosts
Airbnb is too hyped up. It needs to learn some lessons from its Indian counterpart Oyo rooms.
sonink··on Div Turakhia has sold his seventh business, Media.net, for $900M
He is flashy for sure, but Div is probably the only guy in the ads business, who runs a company this size and can still talk 'code' as good as the best engineers you know. They have a huge engineering setup in India and are one of the best paymasters. Though they do fly under the radar even in India.
sonink··on Google Outpaces Facebook on Getting India Connected to Internet
I didnt have a problem with facebooks effort, till I saw the patronizing ads they put out. Zuck read India wrong or maybe it was Marc - either which ways India will be closed for anything like this for facebook now.

Maybe Zuck needs to work harder on his Chinese, not that its going to help when that mirage unfolds.

sonink··on What I learned from the Chinese about our Indian online market
>We do not have enough respect for our Indian consumers.

Stopped reading just about here. If this is what you China taught you, my guess is you are good at making up lessons.

sonink··on China has built an elevated bus that travels above car traffic
This contraption is representative of everything that is wrong with communism.
sonink··on Master Plan, Part Deux
I won't mind being wrong at all, and I have been wrong before. But this is what I feel about the whole thing right now. There are real issues with driverless cars and google has scaled back for this very reason.

Elon is very smart, but even Jobs didnt get it right with Next.

sonink··on Master Plan, Part Deux
If I am on a self-driving car and it meets with an accident, there might be a case to be made against Tesla if I consider myself a very safe driver. Even though on an average self-driving might cause less casualties but that figure might not hold good compared to what my personal accident rate is.

And this should be good enough for law enforcement to nail Tesla.

I think, like everyone else, that Musk is probably the smartest entrepreneurs of our time. In this case though, maybe he is over his head a bit:

- Getting Tesla 3 to production volume will not be easy.

- Autopilot is NOT good enough to be used in production. This can be fatal to Tesla if FCC catches up. Tesla needs to quit Autopilot and focus only on getting Tesla 3 out. Tesla 3 will face competition sooner rather than later and market dominance is not guaranteed.

- SolarCity has absolutely no synergies with this business. It should be sold off.

- SpaceX is again a distraction given how hard it will be for Tesla 3 to roll off.

sonink··on If no-one helps you after a car crash in India, this is why
Everything that you mentioned isn't hard for me at all. The hellish gridlock - I rarely venture out on the main arteries during peak time. The playing chicken - I do it almost instinctively and dont even think about it.

The anarchy that you talk about is simply a result of diverse driving platforms sharing the same space. Indian roads need to have a wide variety of vehicles (2/3/4 wheelers) because 95% of the country simply cannot afford the cheapest car that sells in the US. We can't have wide roads with speed limits because its just too expensive and India is a dramatically poor country.

This model works for now and hopefully India will skip the insanely high energy American model on the way to the next.

sonink··on If no-one helps you after a car crash in India, this is why
Driving in India is only insane to westerners. I have been driving in India for a decade and I dont find it hard at all. Driving in the US though is one of the most stressfull things for me.

Part of the stress in US is because of the different side driving, but also a lot because I have to keep in mind a TON of rules - lane markers, speed limits, lane changing etc.- and everyone moves in super high speed so any mistake can be fatal.

In India, on the other hand I just need to take care of the signals and otherwise wherever my car can fit, I am good to go. If my car rubs a bit against another car or a small bump here and there - no big deal. Driving in the night though is stressful in India also and I avoid it.

sonink··on How we validated our SaaS product without building it
- Just because some people clicked on features they want, it doesnt mean they will pay for it once you launch.

- Just because some people are using your free features, it doesnt mean they will pay for it once it is paid.

- Just because you have 5 paying customers, doesnt mean it will be easy to find out 500 more.

- Just because you have 500 paying customers, it doesnt mean what you did to acquire these 500 will scale to the next 5000.

- Just because you have 5000 paying customers, it doesnt mean that there won't be a new upstart which will dramatically undercut your offering and acquire most of these.

There is a name for this validation process - its called a 'startup'.

sonink··on Ask HN: Graduate early?
I wanted to reply to this post but then I read yours and you nailed it more beautifully then I ever could.

Specifically:

"Appreciate things as they come, be happy, and enjoy your life."

"Go out with your gf. If you don't have one, put down the keyboard, and go get one."

and most imporatantly.

"F productivity."

One thing I would add is try to appreciate more the "normal" people, for whatever they are. Cherish the time you get to hang around them. They are one of the most important part of your life. Love them and respect them for they give a lot of meaning to your life.

sonink··on Why IT Happened in Southern India, an Unorthodox Explanation
Entirely different explanation:

1. India sets up the first few research organizations in Bangalore. - IISc, DRDO, HAL - decision being entirely strategic to keep them away from Pak. nukes.

2. Some engineers think too much on the long lunches afforded by most govt. sector instituitions and see an opportunity in exporting software. One of these guys is narayan murthy.

3. Infosys is born and soon Patni, TCS and Wipro - each drawing from talent pool of DRDO, IISc and HAL. Obviously most start in Bangalore.

4. Engineers from across the country flock to these new high paying jobs. Some again extend their lunches too long.

I am sorry but I don't take decisions like that.Infact most people don't follow decision trees. They go by instinct and then rationalize.
sonink··on Microsoft Releases Bing API - With No Usage Quotas
Microsoft seems to be on the roll (or should I say 'on the bing')

With the smooth loading bing and now the open API, Microsoft seems to be taking the battle straight to Yahoo and Google's court. This time Microsoft does seem to 'get' the future of search, and with Bartz screwing up the Yahoo open API program (with usage quotas and all) and Google just plan scared of releasing its own, the folks at Redmond seem poised for the next big leap in search.

I am not really a Microsoft fan, and use tons of great Google products, but search needs to move ahead, much faster than what Google is taking it.

sonink··on Wolfram Alpha Live
I think wolfram alpha is a better deal than Cuil, but might get as bad a name because of their flawed positioning.

The method does not work without domain specificity. Its not a general purpose tool. Marketing it as one is the biggest mistake wolfram has done and is the reason most people will be dissapointed and inevitably try to slot it as another cuil.

However, if you are willing to disregard that largely cosmetic flaw, the computational engine is very impressive stuff. Assuming, in the future they are able to market/position it properly for specific domains for which they ensure that data is enough, this is going to be an awesome tool and may well compete with Google for the domain specific queries.

sonink··on Wolfram Alpha Live
Searched for "india" -> Firefox + CPU got hanged. Bad omen for india I guess especially after todays election results.
