somethingreen··on Reddit Strike Has Started
Before: denial of violent events gets you blocked, disinfo accounts get marked and shadowbanned.

After: reporting on e.g. Russia invasion of Ukraine gets you shadowbanned, troll farm accounts get boosted once they pay for Blue.

Definite improvement, if you run a state sponsored propaganda troll farm.

somethingreen··on Social media can be a ‘profound risk’ to youth, surgeon general warns
The idea that any of these would normally worry an average young teen is hilarious to me. I grew up during cold war, USSR collapse, multiple wars in the region. At no point was I (or any of my peers to my knowledge) gravely concerned for our future. Because none of us yet had any idea what our normal future is supposed to look like.

The only way these mild horrors get into children heads is, again, through social media.

somethingreen··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Sure, there is a distinct possibility that emergent abilities of LLMs are an illusion, and I personally would prefer it to be that way. I'm just pointing out that AI optimism without AI caution is dumb.
somethingreen··on Steam Now Offers 90-Minute Game Trials
Capcom has been providing demos for most (all?) of their big releases for a while now. Seems to be working out fine for them.
somethingreen··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
The whole "LLMs are not just a fancy auto-complete" argument is based on the fact that they seem to be doing stuff beyond what they are explicitly programmed to do or were expected to do. Even at the current infant scale there doesn't seem to be an efficient way of detecting these emergent properties. Moreover, the fact that you don't need to understand what LLM does is kind of the selling point. The scale and capabilities of AI will grow. It isn't obvious how any incentive to limit or understand those capabilities would appear from their business use.

If it is possible for AI to ever acquire ability to develop and unleash a bioweapon is irrelevant. What is relevant is that as we are now, we have no control or way of knowing that it has happened, and no apparent interest in gaining that control before advancing the scale.

somethingreen··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
From user side Youtube discovery is almost completely broken anyway. I ended up removing both home feed and recommended videos block via extension because they didn't contribute anything besides frustration and page load time for a couple years now.

I learn about creators elsewhere and then look up and subscribe to their channel on YT. This flow will work just fine with p2p as long as creators have a video list and an rss feed anywhere on the internet and a single functioning search engine continues to exist.

somethingreen··on Every web search result in Brave Search is now served by our own index
So you are ok with using an automated censor as long as you are able to review (transparency) and revert (recourse) it's results. Like I said, just make it good.

And sure, we can't verify factuality of every claim, but I do believe there is a big enough set where we can. If you accept that all information on internet is fundamentally unverifiable, then of what use is the whole thing?

somethingreen··on Kids trying to play video games on school laptops
> most kids are already way more tech-savvy

What about those who aren't? Public education is designed to pull those struggling to average level, not leave them behind.

somethingreen··on Every web search result in Brave Search is now served by our own index
The benefits of censoring misinformation are obvious if you think about it for even a couple minutes.

If you run a community tech support forum and someone starts suggesting deletion of windows32 directory as a solution to other users issues, do you let them do that?

If some neighbor in your bbq party claims to be a doctor and goes on a rant about benefits of microdosing rat poison, do you invite them ever again?

Do you disable spam filter in your mail?

We now have malicious misinformation multiplied to internet scale by modern tech. Add LLMs in the mix and we will drown in it if no measures are taken.

You want to prevent politicians or corporations from abusing or even using censorship at all - good, implement corresponding barriers. Limit scope to clear factual misinfo and not e.g. opinions - yes, sure. Proper transparent process, recourse, rehabilitation, grace of application, oversight - absolutely, implement all of those things.

Make censorship good. Denying it is required makes no sense.

somethingreen··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing
I don't think there is an agenda, but design by committee has gotten to the point where it does look like there is one. If you are hell bent on checking the same set of was-well-received-before boxes in every piece of schlock you pump out, people reasonably start to believe that checking boxes is the point. From there any checkbox that doesn't align with viewer's world view is perceived as propaganda.
somethingreen··on Making friends as an adult is hard (2021)
> In communist countries, I suspect that regular people form strong friendships because there are no good mechanisms to extract resources from each other

It is the opposite. If money doesn't buy you anything, it is knowing people that buys you everything. Look up the meaning of the word "блат".

somethingreen··on Microsoft deleted the public support forums for SwiftKey
It is true, we can't force people to think the way we want, nor should we want to. What we can do, hopefully, is make them live with the consequences of admitting the way they think, whatever that entails.

There are countries where it is not against the law to be a nazi, but you still get to live as a nazi.

somethingreen··on Microsoft deleted the public support forums for SwiftKey
It is not a jump. When it comes to genocide, you are either for it or against. There is no center, no above, no neutral. The only other option is being unaware. What is being done in the west is people continuously being made aware and forced to make a choice. It's not a pleasant choice to make either way, so it's understandable that people are not happy to have to make it. But trying to carve out a neutral position where there is none, is not going to work.
somethingreen··on The case for banning children from social media
Now go to Steamcharts, find first game that isn't a game-as-a-service and calculate ratio of its hours played in relation to everything above it. Then do that for the second and third - see if the ratio grows or shrinks further.

The fact that non-predatory games do exist is hardly relevant if what people are actually playing most of the time are indeed endless, dark pattern ridden grinds if not outright no-win casinos of which mobile gaming consists almost exclusively.

Whole industry needn't be banned, but a lot of its practices absolutely have to be at least regulated.

somethingreen··on Rational Dress Society
There absolutely is a pressure on women to look a certain way, but I don't think number of pockets is in that category. I personally can't think of a single time number of pockets on a woman was addressed critically by either a man or another woman. Unless they were wearing one of those fishing vests, I guess. Men fashion often turns on cargo pants at least - I'm not sure if even that is a major thing for women. Don't you think it's weird that there is a supposedly strictly enforced norm and most of society is largely unaware of its existence?
somethingreen··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
It has little to do with privacy - it's about adversary controlling a Skinner box which millions of your citizens have willingly put themselves in. It's just, how do you encode that into law? So privacy it is.
somethingreen··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
That's how I see it too. Big neo-luddite movement, anti-AI unions, "AI Free" labeling with corresponding certification, registries of AI users (and witch hunts of course), AIs being weaponized to destroy or corrupt other AIs.

AI providers need to be at the forefront of lobbying for reasonable AI control laws, or they are up for a rude awakening.

somethingreen··on Utah is first US state to limit teen social media access
Just use BankID/GovID/whatever verified OAuth service and request a single age/date of birth data point once. No need to authenticate or store anything.
somethingreen··on Post-GPT Computing
In order to be able to make use of the code produced by AI - be it review, validate, fix, integrate or iterate - operator needs to ultimately be better than AI at making software. (Unless we abandon the idea of understanding what exactly software we are running does)

The question then is how exactly does one become better than AI at making software if no one is going to pay you to make software until you are better than AI?

The same issue with art - we need a sea of mediocre artists and a market for their work for great artists to emerge. AI takes over mediocre art market - all commercially driven art disappears.

somethingreen··on Post-GPT Computing
If there is a way to produce senior software engineers without years of work experience, why aren't we doing it now?
somethingreen··on Microsoft Edge sets Yandex as default search engine in Moldova
Not sure why the downvotes, as, yes, Yandex along with several other russian internet service companies is blocked in Ukraine and it is almost certainly why it is not being set as default, because doing so would straight up break search altogether.
somethingreen··on Reversing into a car park safer, more efficient for driver and pedestrians
Over here you aren't allowed to park rear of the vehicle towards sidewalk if it's directly adjacent to parking spot. Sadly the rule isn't enforced and my grandma once got hit on a sidewalk by a food truck backing up to unload.
somethingreen··on Cobalt is suddenly abundant
Yea, the stumble is usually at the step of gaining control of the whole board or keeping money in the chunk of the board you control.
somethingreen··on Throughout the rich world, the young are falling out of love with cars
It's probably this. Best things about cars are luxury, not strictly utility.

Having to own a car and drive it everywhere every day can be pretty miserable. Being able to afford owning a car and not having to drive it all the time is wonderful. Freedom of having an option to just go anywhere at any time is not something I ever thought I would appreciate so much before I had to get a car for security reasons. But it absolutely is a luxury as even mediocre public or commercial services will get you 90% of own car utility. And good public or commercial services can eliminate whole categories of car use cases.

somethingreen··on Arkansas Proposes Requiring ID to Watch Porn Online
Watching porn is a hyperdopaminergic activity and the industry is highly exploitative to everyone involved. Sex ed is to porn what biochemistry class is to cocaine.
somethingreen··on Go claims telemetry objectors arguing in bad faith and violating Code of Conduct
Opt-in telemetry not executing for users who would like it to be executing, because they don't know about it or forgot, makes it an under-advertised feature.

Opt-out telemetry executing for users who would not like it to be executing, because they don't know about it or forgot, makes it a spyware.

The rest of the discussion only makes sense to have if you agree there are circumstances when implementing spyware is justified.

somethingreen··on International Security and Estonia 2023
The amount of effort you people put into not hearing what russians have on multiple occasions in plainest of words claimed to be the goal of the war is honestly mind boggling.
somethingreen··on Math breakdown: Anime homing missiles
These terms come from Sakuga scene where artist attribution and appreciation are a big part of it. See also "Yutapon Cubes", for example.

Also we absolutely do identify art styles after their creators if the style is distinct enough, but doesn't necessarily establish a new branch, e.g. Escher, Warhol, Wes Anderson.

somethingreen··on Virtual DOM is pure overhead (2018)
They don't because since React set the bar, any new framework that didn't solve the problem VDOM did in some way, was dead on arrival.

If Svelte way is better at minimizing and batching DOM updates, they should probably argue and show that, not misrepresent what VDOM does (while blaming strawmanning on others no less).

somethingreen··on The Vast Humanity of Anton Chekhov
I found most of them did have at least one interesting take or a perspective. Listening to people able to talk on serious topic for hours going deep into nuance was refreshing. And then there was Eric Weinstein, who could do that on seemingly endless array of topics and would casually drop gold after gold, before he got stuck on his DISC thing. But after "Ukraine is being brutalized. It is also corrupt." he is dead to me, of course.
