sockgrant··on Facebook senior software engineer interview
HN loves to hate FAANG interviews. There's always a monthly passion post about how flawed they are.

I don't think it's unfair to say that Google and FB are considered to have strong engineering talent. So the interview process has to have _some_ hand in that success, even if it's also turning away some would-be strong performers.

I'm not saying the interview process shouldn't be criticized or that it's beyond improvement. And, yeah, it's a little silly to go memorize a bunch of algorithms so you can recite them on the stop. Furthermore, so many interview questions are posted on leetcode... and there's so many more flaws to be pointed out, but in spite of that, they still manage to have a high engineering bar.

But if you only read HN you'd think it's a total failure.

Can fail behavioral or design interviews while passing coding and not get hired. Can also have written what you thought was good code but have been given too many hints. Or, could have written good code to the question asked, but took so long that interviewer didn't get to a second question and you wouldn't ever know that.
sockgrant··on A computer science study plan to become a software engineer
> It's definitely nice to have these skills but let's be real, you aren't going to use them on a daily basis.

I mean, practice for the job you want.

The majority of software jobs don't need this stuff -- writing frontend code, writing some backend services, mobile.... the type of work where you a) aren't building the platforms / tools everything is based on b) don't need the best performance, just need it to work OK.

But there are plenty of jobs that do need this stuff. Working on an OS, or database, or a product used by millions, or a large scale platform...

Advertising is eating the internet alive? Advertising has made the internet as we know it possible.
sockgrant··on De-Escalation Keeps Protesters and Police Safer
There’s gigabytes of video of every cop in the US? And every one of them is a racist brutality piece of trash? Can you show me this archive?

Or are you saying that there’s hundreds of videos of piece of trash cops and you’re projecting that to all cops?

sockgrant··on De-Escalation Keeps Protesters and Police Safer
That could be. I haven’t given much thought on how to solve the problem. It could also be that we need to kill laws that are protecting police from the justice system.
sockgrant··on De-Escalation Keeps Protesters and Police Safer
That doesn’t mean that all officers are bad. Good cops exist.
sockgrant··on De-Escalation Keeps Protesters and Police Safer
You got sources for those stats?

> There are no good career cops

I’ve watched a few videos of cops kneeling with protestors or cops laying down guns and walking with them. Are those bad cops?

When you say “there are no good career cops” that means there doesn’t exist one good career cop. It’s a ludicrous thing to say.

sockgrant··on De-Escalation Keeps Protesters and Police Safer
Sorry, your comment might make some good points but you lost me, your reader, when you made absolute claims about police officers.

There certainly exist police that just want to be tough guys and beat people up. But there’s plenty officers not like that.

You detract from your other points by taking such a black and white stance.

sockgrant··on Rust: Dropping heavy things in another thread can make your code 10000x faster
1) he should pass by reference to avoid the extra copy. So in his example yes it’s dev naivety

2) but somewhere somehow this object will deallocate, so his trick of putting it to another thread would work if the deal location takes awhile. Same for cpp if you have a massive object in a unique ptr. So it’s not a rust issue

sockgrant··on Show HN: Fantasy Congress – a fantasy sports website for politics
Is it possible to author a program that can determine whether a bill is "better" or "worse" for constituents, and whether it makes the city / county / state / country "better"?

How would you categorize pro life?

How would you categorize shipping all homeless population to another state?

My take on the purpose of this game, besides obviously for fun, is to get people more engaged with what's happening in politics, and who is responsible for what.

I don't think a program should tell people what is good and bad.

I think it's wonderful to give them the motivation to learn and draw their own conclusions.

sockgrant··on Tesla Delivers Record 97,000 Vehicles in Q3
Do you have any comment on my assertion that Taycan is not a Model S replacement?
sockgrant··on Tesla Delivers Record 97,000 Vehicles in Q3
Not to mention the Model S is faster 0-60 and cheaper.
sockgrant··on Tesla Delivers Record 97,000 Vehicles in Q3
I thought Tesla superchargers have faster charging speed? They have 150kW charging, is Porsche doing something better?

OP said Taycan is the new Model S, I think that your comment vs. mine highlights that this isn't true -- Taycan customers are not the same as Tesla customers. Tesla customers get a good bang for their buck -- speed, range, charging network at a cheap price. Porsche customers get brand, design, & build quality.

Someone who values what Porsche has to offer probably was never interested in a Tesla.

Meanwhile a Model 3 Performance -- the same speed as the Taycan -- costs $90,000 less.

sockgrant··on Tesla Delivers Record 97,000 Vehicles in Q3
Can the Taycan compete on price, speed, range, and charging network? AFAIK it loses in all of those categories.

sockgrant··on I got asked LeetCode questions for a dev-ops systems engineering job today
Well it sounds like a phone interview. One goal of the phone interview is to not waste people’s time with onsite if it’s determined the candidate couldn’t pass onsite.

If their onsite has more leetcode coding questions, then the interview served its purpose.

It wasn’t surprising that what he was doing lead to that result.

It was that it was a slow creep that lead him down the path and sometimes you don’t realize where you’re headed until you have a come-to moment where you take stock of your life.

sockgrant··on Ask HN: Should I quit my job?
If it’s what you desire, then yes, you should quit.

I’ve done it before and it’s a great experience. 100% worth it. Follow your dreams.

Just don’t delude yourself into thinking you will grow your side project into a full time income. You may. But don’t count on it.

sockgrant··on Leaving Google Fi
This has been known for awhile.

The exception is if you pay good money to advertise with them.

sockgrant··on Leaving Google Fi
Google is a search and advertising company. Literally nothing else matters to them.

People should stop being surprised that Google’s side projects that don’t even make a blip on the earnings report are not to be used.

Don’t build on google APIs unless it’s Android and don’t make them your phone carrier.

sockgrant··on Google Decides to Monetize Maps
There are so many APIs that they've flipped pricing on or flat out cancelled I'm surprised anyone still uses them for absolutely any APIs.

Seriously.

I can't say this strongly enough:

Google APIs and platforms are for building toy weekend projects. DO NOT use them for your business.

sockgrant··on OKRs Aren't Going to Fix Your Communication Issues
OKRs are goals.

Slack is a chat app.

You can chat over slack about goals, but slack isn’t goals and goals aren’t a chat app.

sockgrant··on OKRs Aren't Going to Fix Your Communication Issues
Why didn’t you make OKRs out of refactoring, integration tests, etc.?
sockgrant··on Why I quit a $500K job at Amazon to work for myself
> What kind of companies pay software engineers 300k+?

The big ones. Google Facebook Microsoft Amazon.

> Is it realistic to make 500k-1 million+ at these companies as a developer?

It's realistic but not a given. You've gotta be into staff software engineer+ range to be making that much. Plenty of people never make staff.

> How much is it in stocks/rsus vs salary at that point?

Probably around 50/50. 50 salary 50 bonus + rsus. Or maybe even 40 salary 60 bonus + rsu.

> What skillsets do these people have?

Be one of the better software engineers at a company that can curate top engineers.

Strong communication, high interpersonal skills, ability to lead complex software projects, high intelligence, fast learner, breadth and depth of understanding of software. Plays well with others. Generalist -- able to work in a variety of languages with different tools, with no hesitation to learn and quickly understand new environments. These engineers may be domain experts at specific things, but they are by no means pigeonholed.

Usually, but not always, these engineers are also very productive and motivated.

sockgrant··on UFOs spotted off Irish coast under investigation
Dang. That's scary.

While I was watching I started out in awe feeling like "holy crap, I'm looking at a UFO!" But after staring at it for a long time and then having the white flashes I quickly changed to "oh fuck, I'm near a UFO".

I was with someone, they were very scared, too.
