sneakernets··on YouTube burnout is real. Creators are struggling to cope
The only way to fix the crux of the YouTube "problem" is to force Google to disclose how their subscription and recommendation algorithms work. The reaction from YouTube top brass to previous demands of transparency have been to treat the AI as some sort of deity instead of a computer program. In the USA, I'm afraid it will take a constitutional amendment to fix this.
sneakernets··on Toward Understanding E-Prime (2001)
Good! Now, let's ditch indefinite and definite articles. Yet more unneeded fluff.
sneakernets··on Conservatives changed twitter name to 'FactCheckUK' during the TV debate
Twitter could fix this in no time by adding an alert next to a recently changed name (within a few days) and/or a list of previous names. Steam figured this stuff out years ago.
sneakernets··on Linux Distributions Archives
Off the top of my head: * Some VGM formats (game music) are compressed with rar * Certain 90s game mods are compressed with rar * Lots of pirated/cracked games are compressed with rar

The main reason I've been told as to why this is seems to be the extensive error correction, which was a big deal with large game files back in the Dial-Up/ISDN days where a corrupted download was more common than now, and old habits die hard.

sneakernets··on How Untitled Goose Game became a real video game
Personally, It's a game I love to hate. growing up near a large lake, I got to see these flying rage machines up close, and to play as one opened up a part of my brain I had closed up for years.

I want more games like this.

sneakernets··on macOS Catalina
This is the same boat I'm in. Some of these programs were created only by one person, who can be impossible to track down and get a timely response.
sneakernets··on macOS Catalina
Unfortunately the applications I use are Proprietary and Music related _on top of_ being OSX/Windows specific, and there's no way I can replicate this setup on Linux.
sneakernets··on macOS Catalina
This explains the downvotes. I did some googling and noticed "Universal Binaries" mentioned in the results, which I remember in the 00s but had no idea that was remotely related to the OS binaries themselves.
sneakernets··on macOS Catalina
I don't expect new features to be implemented in 32-bit builds - maybe security patches at the most - so freezing it and keeping it as a separate package should be feasible.

This is exactly what Linux distros are planning to do.

sneakernets··on macOS Catalina
Honestly, the 32-bit support shouldn't have been removed. It should have been split off into a separate package like the XQuartz project, as some of us still use 32-bit applications daily.

Very disturbing that one of the biggest companies around can't keep 32-bit support, at least in some capacity.

sneakernets··on Goodbye, Motherboard. Hello, Silicon-Interconnect Fabric
This sounds like making the entire motherboard an equivalent of an epoxy blob.
sneakernets··on “Did You Eat the Whole Cake?” On Learning Estonian
When English picked up all those Anglo-Norman words, they were indeed spoken as written. Middle English texts seem to confirm this.
sneakernets··on The Czech Cyber Billionaire Who Founded Avast
Infecting machines with malware intentionally? They did this and are still allowed to sell product?
sneakernets··on It's A-Me, HTML Mario
"It's-a me, DMCA!" springs to mind.

Nintendo doesn't really understand the concept of fan works yet. most corporations would love to have this sort of loyalty.

sneakernets··on Weighted blankets might ease insomnia and anxiety
There's no real evidence of this. I could argue that bright, blinding lights actually help conceal criminals by the sheer lighting difference.
sneakernets··on Apple expands parts access to more independent repair businesses
Louis has done so much to keep the fire hot under Apple when it comes to Right To Repair. He's even gone to state legislatures to demonstrate why RtR is required in the modern world. "Mad Props" to Louis.
sneakernets··on Rails 6.0
Nothing beats Rails for slinging out a website or interactive "web app" in a week.
sneakernets··on Pesticides Could Be Making People Fat
I'll admit I'm only saying anecdotes, but I've met very, very few obese people who said they ate when "bored or sad". The friends I had who did gain weight, did during the fat-free craze of the late 80s and early 90s, when "guilt-free" candybars shot onto the market labelled as diet foods. It even has a name: the "SnackWell Effect".

sneakernets··on Unusual, evidence-based ways to get better at a new language
I had a friend tell me that you're only truly near-native in a foreign language if you can troll online using it.

It's crass, but I like it.

sneakernets··on Building the New Twitter.com
That would break the spontaneous nature of "live-tweeting".
sneakernets··on Twitter was down
Stuff like this makes me wonder if the Internet really is super vulnerable, and the only reason there isn't a mass disruption of communication all the time is because some script kiddies's Pizza Rolls were perfect today so he held off on attacking a backbone.
sneakernets··on AMD Zen 2 Microarchitecture Analysis: Ryzen 3000 and EPYC Rome
It's very hard to eat Intel's lunch when everyone tunes to Intel's notes. It'll take a while.
sneakernets··on Jony Ive to form independent design company with Apple as client
I just want a thick MacBook Pro again. To my brain, thin = flimsy and cheap. Give me something with some weight to it, and a keyboard that doesn't suck. Heck, just refresh the 2011 design with modern tech and I'll be happy.

(And no more friggin' touchbar that messes up my Vim workflow. please!)

sneakernets··on Why are pedestrian deaths increasing in the US?
Pedestrians were in cities hundreds of years before, vehicles should never have been promoted to first place. How to fix this in the cities? Remove almost all instances of cars getting near pedestrians by:

1: Removing one way streets. Having to drive all the way around to go somewhere nearby keeps the car on the road that much longer and doubles the number of crosswalks to pass through. 2: Removing left turns. Cars invading the pedestrians' right of way from the other side of the street is dangerous. 3: Reducing city speed limits from 30mph to 15. 30mph is ridiculous. 4. Enforcing carpooling. One person driving a huge SUV is such a waste of gas, space, and contributes to highways doubling as parking lots at rush hour. 5. Promoting city housing as much as possible for all new growth. For every honest baby-boomer suburb created with proper planning, there were two white-flight suburbs hastily created without. 6. Demanding companies in the city limits revise the need for employees to commute. Employees who can do their job at home deserve that privilege.

sneakernets··on How Id built Wolfenstein 3D using Commander Keen tech
I remember Doom pushing a much higher frame rate than that with those specs. The real issue was that you needed L2 cache!
sneakernets··on How Id built Wolfenstein 3D using Commander Keen tech
I wish the owner of the Keen Dreams IP was as dedicated and resourceful as you are. I have a feeling we've lost that one for good.
sneakernets··on On Ocracoke Island, the only American dialect that is not identified as American
A lot of us learned that repressing the dialect what we're comfortable with made people take us more seriously. Rather than any pidgin or trade language forming to communicate effectively, it was safer to just assimilate.

The true problem is, we're unintelligible to anyone that doesn't care enough to listen. Anything with different vowels and archaic grammar and pronunciation gets tuned out immediately, or the listener gets angry (which at least shows an attempt at listening).

sneakernets··on On Ocracoke Island, the only American dialect that is not identified as American
The reason these dialects (I am a speaker of this) are dying is that they are discouraged at a young age by the school systems and parents who are worried that dialects like these are seen as "unintelligent" and will cause everything from bullying by children at school, to being turned down for interviews, jobs and even college.

My mother was disciplined for it repeatedly. I had to take "speech therapy" until I was much older when there was a bit of backlash growing against it locally - That was as recent as the late 90s.

sneakernets··on India has the highest data usage per smartphone
Because they're Xfinity Mobile. Their plans are $12 per GB of data.
sneakernets··on Wine Developers Concerned with Ubuntu Dropping 32-Bit Support
I'll admit I'm a very fringe case, but I loved the ability to play the original Microsoft Entertainment Packs on my Mac using WINE. There's just something about how simple and clean those games are, and people actually like to see them when I have a paused game of rodent's revenge on one of my screens.

I really don't want to lose that!
