sneakernets··on Wappalyzer no longer open source?
I posted the most recent mirror possible a little further up this thread. Hopefully it works for you. Not sure what other repos it might require which are also gone, but it's something.
sneakernets··on Wappalyzer no longer open source?
Looks like someone managed to grab a full copy right before the repo was yanked: https://github.com/dochne/wappalyzer

Last commit was 15 hours ago. This was very recent.

sneakernets··on Linux on the Framework Laptop
I can't type on a chiclet keyboard. I've tried. Until a laptop has a real keyboard again, I've had to stick with my 2011 T520.
sneakernets··on Beam has raised $9.5M to reinvent the browser
Why, oh god why? Imagine if all these soon-to-fail initiatives helped to develop Firefox, an actual alternative to Chrome and Blink-based browsers!
sneakernets··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
I think The issue with teamspeak and Ventrilo were...cost. Kids couldn't afford hosting a server.

Additionally, it was stupid easy to evade bans on those platforms and troll for hours if Admins weren't on.

sneakernets··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
I'm working from memory, but AIM at the peak had webcam support and a very rudimentary screen share component. I keep thinking the name of it was "AIM Share", but Googling that does not bring up mentions of it.

There's not much left from that specific era.

sneakernets··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
I really think it's just the majority of Discord users being from everything but IRC.

Discord servers filled with former/current IRC users rarely have any issues in my experience.

There were potential competitors back when it really didn't matter - the early 00s. Even AIM at its feature peak could do pretty much everything Discord can do now (save for some of the server organization and custom content), but only a fraction in the US had Broadband to take advantage of it.

And it wasn't written in resource-hungry Electron.

sneakernets··on Wine 6.0
Funny you say that, Lego Island, a game that required niche DX5 features to run properly and thus notoriously never worked in WINE, is finally getting addressed as of July of last year. Those issues in question (10729 and 22039 on WineHQ Bugzilla) were over a decade old, too.

So yes, please leave reports, they will get addressed, eventually. :-)

sneakernets··on Wine 6.0
Wine has been a wonderful piece of software when it comes to running old 16-bit Windows games and CD-ROMs of the early to mid-nineties. I can run tons of games which will never see a re-release on a modern machine without spinning up a VM.
sneakernets··on Apple releases open source modules of Big Sur
This is the kind of stuff Wikis (and wiki-likes) were made for. It's so frustrating when trying to find some references and stumble across the answer on random blog posts.
sneakernets··on The impact of school shutdown on sleep in adolescents: a natural experiment
Where do you live that schools are still that close? some schools are up to 15 miles away from students.
sneakernets··on Chrome is deploying HTTP/3 and IETF QUIC
Meanwhile, in the real world...

As an early Linux user, I still remember running a Windows VM with IE installed, for years, just to do online banking. Heck, at my current corporate job all the Mac users (mostly the web designers) are given VMs to run IE11 to fill out their timecards, and use product management software. This is absurd, but real.

I'm no stranger to having to use VMs to do basic stuff online, but not everyone else is. And, to be honest, no one should have to set up a VM to use a browser they cannot trust, just to protect themselves from stupid drive-by malware.

sneakernets··on Minecraft's “Pack.png” Seed Reversal Methodology
That's the entire thrill of the "Anarchy servers" twitch streams - to not get caught even if you're famous.
sneakernets··on YouTube is shutting down crowdsourced captions
In a just world, this would be illegal.

On the bright side, dozens of browser extensions and scripts will have to be created to solve yet another needless problem created by Google.

sneakernets··on A Monday Is a Tuesday Is a Sunday as Covid-19 Disrupts Internal Clocks
Still in Smarch.
sneakernets··on Learning to See in the Dark (2018)
Speaking of, This would help a lot of awful dark photos sent in to news sources.
sneakernets··on Brown: color is weird [video]
Well, Contrast is usually in parlance as extremes. I think he means in context of what else is in the image, not just contrast. For example, you can have a "dark green" and "dark orange" used in a graphic of a tree on a black background, and you would perceive it as brown due to the context of the "tree-ness" on your screen.
sneakernets··on New brain networks come ‘online’ during adolescence
I think we need to draw a line in the sand though and say fast, forced development doesn't work on humans as well as some imply it does. You cannot make the brain "grow faster"; that's not how humans work.
sneakernets··on MIDI 2.0, first major overhaul to music interface standard from 1983
I'm so glad this happened, this may put an end to the many, many bespoke midi implementations I've come across.

I participated in a piano competition over a decade ago (I believe it was sponsored by YAMAHA) which recorded all participants through an extended MIDI format that increased the resolution and bumped almost everything up to 1024 max from 127 max. With MIDI 2.0 this wouldn't even be required, all the functionality is included.

sneakernets··on U.S. job openings post biggest drop in more than four years
Correct, we do have legal US definitions which makes pensions different than DC Plans.
sneakernets··on U.S. job openings post biggest drop in more than four years
And most never will. The ones left are awful and full of restrictions, and can be taken away at any time for any reason, even if it's illegal in your state.
sneakernets··on U.S. job openings post biggest drop in more than four years
No unions and privatizing government jobs = no pensions.
sneakernets··on U.S. job openings post biggest drop in more than four years
Pensions as we know them won't exist in five to ten years.
sneakernets··on I opened a link some random person sent me and I got raided (2015)
I do believe we hit a nerve... ;)
sneakernets··on The Oldschool PC Font Pack
When do we get fonts with such features in all OSes? It took ages to get Emoji right in OSes that weren't mobile, now it's time for fonts themselves to step it up.
sneakernets··on I opened a link some random person sent me and I got raided (2015)
It's a play on the last syllable resembling "rat", popularized by Rush Limbaugh's radio show.

I do remember hearing "Republican'ts" and "rethuglicans" from dems but in my experience it's extremely rare.

sneakernets··on Apple AirPods: iPhone accessory or the next big thing?
They've always named things this way. It was once cool to have stuff like "WF-100MX3" because it reflected the kitsch of the space age.
sneakernets··on Warren Buffett is spending billions to make Iowa 'the Saudi Arabia of wind'
Yes, by several orders of magnitude. Last I checked, Windmills killed 100s of thousands since their inception while domestic cats kill billions each year.
sneakernets··on The old internet died and we watched and did nothing
Don't know why you're being downvoted when this is exactly the case in my experience. They never said "spying" outright but it's definitely why walled gardens like AOL popped up like wildfire in the 90s and why stuff like AIM was the exception and not the rule.
