smoovb··on I bought the cheapest EV, a used Nissan Leaf
Just got a 2014 500e for $5k - 50k miles. What a great city car! We also have Model Y, and so the Fiat's 2 pedal driving, lack of good regen, multi-step lock/unlock process can all be forgiven for the price.
smoovb··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
Tether had a big chunk of funds seized by a government/bank making them less then whole. They did the needful to get past that and now a distant memory. Scam allegations are made by old curmudgeons who drank the bitfinexed cool-aid.

Ad hominem is as ad hominem does.
smoovb··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
Counterpoint. Tether has grown into one of the most profitable, well funded companies on the planet. Their past growing pains are irrelevant to where they are now. They make $30-50 million per day with just 200 employees. They are the 18th largest holder of US debt, ahead of UAE and Germany. Last year, Tether achieved $14 billion in profit, surpassing Pfizer, Tesla, and BlackRock. https://www.bitget.com/news/detail/12560604740855

Much to the chagrin of Circle and USDC

Said another way, much lower legacy technical debt than trying to be a bank.

smoovb··on YouTube Is Swallowing TV Whole, and It's Coming for the Sitcom
Ads are now my pet peeve. I will not tolerate them. Let me pay for content I want.
smoovb··on Google AI Ultra
As a product manager who has been paying an overseas developer $4,000 a month, I'm getting quite close to replace him with a $100 a month Claude Max subscription. These high subscription costs are nothing compared to the low level employees that will be replaced or supplemented.
smoovb··on UN says scam call centers are epidemic and expanding globally
The story of minor Chinese celebrity Wang Xing who was abducted in Thailand forced into a scam call center in Myanmar as really shined a light on this scam call center issue. As a result of these scams in Thailand, the Telecoms and Banks have added restrictive measures like limiting person to person transfer amounts and KYC on all SIM cards. We can't have nice things.

smoovb··on Apple shuffles AI executive ranks in bid to turn around Siri
On iPhone 15 you can set the "Action Button" to ChatGTP voice, which is a nice proxy for what Siri could be.

smoovb··on Are electric cars that much cheaper to operate?
Am paying 0.044 per kWh with super off peak timed home charging 11pm - 7am in Washington.
smoovb··on Are electric cars that much cheaper to operate?
> With two oil changes needed per year at an average cost of $100 each, the additional expense shortens the break-even period by approximately 0.5 years.

Add 10 mins there and back, the booking and you're looking at 1hr for this event. If it costs $100 and you consider your time, gas too and from... You could easily bump this cost to $200, or double in real costs.

smoovb··on No Bitcoin ETFs at Vanguard (2024)
Paper bills, or “fiat” money, also have no intrinsic value.

Using paper money has already defined you as a participant in accepting the societal construct of money.

As such, Bitcoin having no intrinsic is not novel or consequential and has no bearing on its utility.

smoovb··on No Bitcoin ETFs at Vanguard (2024)
It's not hard to imagine your tokenized income stream and tokenized assets, algorithmically qualifying you for a defi loan with out need for some guy at a physical desk in a physical building. Hence it's also not hard to imagine the economic value you attribute to banks, as value eventually accruing to crypto.
smoovb··on Using eSIMs with devices that only have a physical SIM slot via a 9eSIM SIM car
Yes. But esim.me high prices, clunky kyc and other issues left plenty of room for competitors.
smoovb··on Using eSIMs with devices that only have a physical SIM slot via a 9eSIM SIM car
If the eSIM is registered, you can also reissue a Thai eSIM online.

Routing data back to the home network is how it can get counted and charged for.

The host roaming network is just selling in bulk, but does not own the customer.

smoovb··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
As China bans TikTok too, this move shouts “We don’t want this app either.”
smoovb··on Ads chew through half of mobile data
I wish Brave had succeeded with their YouTube Premium model of web browsing. Let me pay one single provider to remove all web ads and paywalls, and that provider pays creators. Still a great mobile browser.
smoovb··on The Forest Service Is Losing 2,400 Jobs–Including Most of Its Trail Workers
> Even with these sobering financial details, it’s clear that the agency’s decision to balance the books by cutting seasonal jobs came as a shock to many employees.

Time for this to stop being a shock. The country needs some harsh belt tightening and stories like these will become commonplace if real reform is practiced.

smoovb··on Why pay for a search engine
I would pay for Chrome Premium, as I pay for Youtube Premium. Prefer the Brave/YT Premium model where creators and sites get some share of your payment. The Kagi model, unless I missed it, seems to be "just pay us" with nothing going to creators.
