smoovb··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
Blocked for some in US too.
smoovb··on Automattic has a new board after failed attempt to put CEO on leave
Wordpress does not seem long for this world. How much of the Wordpress ecosystem is pure wasted resources, trying to be accommodating for all possibilities? As people see how easy Claude or Codex makes it to get off flat price Wordpress hosting and on to usage based platforms like Vercel, Wordpress usage will fade out. Feels like bloatware has no place in they coming world of AI customized software builds.
smoovb··on Meta One – personal/creator/business subscription plans
Paid plans with no mention of blocking ads. The balls on these people.
smoovb··on Nintendo has raised its employees base salary by 10%
The CEO then went on to explain, “We raised base salaries in Japan by 10 percent in April 2023,” adding, “Since then, we have continued to review our compensation system to ensure that remuneration aligns with employees’ demonstrated capabilities, and in April 2026 we implemented further salary increases, including for starting pay.”

If their last raise was 3-4 years ago, this is a simple inflation adjustment, amazing they get good vibe front page Hacker News credit for this.

smoovb··on Monetization Gateway: Charge for any resource behind Cloudflare via x402
Debit cards have to pay too many people. The acquiring bank, the receiving bank, the network, all take their fees. Stripe and their minimum $.30 per transactions leave no room for $0.01 API calls.
smoovb··on EFF is leaving X
I am a donor and the EFF post feels performative and political. They still post to Flickr!
smoovb··on EFF is leaving X
Maybe most people here are social platform agnostic and thus EFF's limply constructed reasoning does not make make much sense for a brand trying to maximise their audience. Unless EFF are not platform agnostic and hold some view of the kinds of social platforms they are on. Then this EFF action makes sense.
smoovb··on EFF is leaving X
>The math hasn’t worked out for a while now.

Have the costs to post to X grown too high? The salary of someone with the technical know-how to work the social media platform is too expensive? How does the math compare with Mastodon? Do you know about buffer.com?

I started giving to EFF about 10 years ago. It's pretty much the first and only organization I have regularly given to. It always felt like a non-political organization focused squarely on the right to access. Especially with its support of the Tor project. But this news has me confused and other commenters seem to be seeing virtue signaling or politically motivation.

smoovb··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
Satoshi Nakamoto was likely created in response to the December 2005 raid of e-Gold in Florida by U.S. Secret Service/FBI, and other similar incidents. e-Gold was the largest Digital currency at the time clearly showed the dangers of centralization. Douglas Jackson's indictment occurred about 18 months before the Bitcoin whitepaper.

So the risk of centrally founding another digital currency was clear at the time and e-Gold was discussed by both Back and Finney.

Launching without a single point of failure, a single arrestable founder was critical to the success of Bitcoin.

smoovb··on Following 35% growth, solar has passed hydro on US grid
Biggest take away - 90 million acres in the US go to corn/ethanol production. 31 acres of corn for ethanol to match the energy production of just 1 acre of solar panels. Revenue could be 3-4x that of corn production. Get ready for rise of the photon farmers.

We are living thru the 'doctors prescribing cigarettes' era of lucrative fear-mongering.
smoovb··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
Youtube has this model with Preimum. If Chrome rolled out Chrome Premium, (and copied the Brave BAT model of paying sites you give attention to), I'd be happy to pay.
smoovb··on Antirender: remove the glossy shine on architectural renderings
You'd love Brave browser then.

smoovb··on Waymo robotaxis are now giving rides on freeways in LA, SF and Phoenix
While I'm not sure that is true, it's fun to watch the bets that were made, unfold. And who's going to take spot #3?
smoovb··on Waymo robotaxis are now giving rides on freeways in LA, SF and Phoenix
If it comes to pass that traffic jams are in large part due to poor human choices, that will bode poorly for the general populace to continue to be allowed to drive.

Flying used to be like this - my grandpa had 3 airplanes, used one to fly a calf back to his farm. But flying got regulated till it's quite rare to meet a casual pilot with his own plane.

smoovb··on Steam Machine
Maybe we are meant to vote on it. I vote $299.
smoovb··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
Maybe it had the "I bought this long after I knew Hitler was a fascist" bumper sticker?
smoovb··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
I was doing the math on leasing an EV and really seems to work. With the EV deprecation, you are actually coming out ahead of buying in many cases. A friend did this with a Kia a few years ago and looks like its a valid option.
smoovb··on EVs are depreciating faster than gas-powered cars
Picked up a 10 year old Fiat 500e with 50k miles for $5k as my daughters first car. She and my wife love it. Way more power than the gas model, and a super fun drive.

Thank you "Plummeting Resale Values"!

smoovb··on NYC Telecom Raid: What's Up with Those Weird SIM Banks?
Why would the mobile provider want to catch it?

If these guys are paying MobileX for 256 sims per bank * 64 sim banks = 16,384 sims and say $20 per plan = $327,680 per month of company income.

smoovb··on NYC Telecom Raid: What's Up with Those Weird SIM Banks?
The Secret Service is being overly alarmist, but to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

“We need to do forensics on 100,000 cell phones, essentially all the phone calls, all the text messages, anything to do with communications, see where those numbers end up,” "You can’t text message, you can’t use your cell phone. And if you coupled that with some sort of other event associated with UNGA, you know, use your imagination there, it could be catastrophic to the city."

So until we do our jobs, imagine the worst case scenario. Thanks guys.

Could be rent US a number service, data roaming, VOIP or SMS termination, account registration (google, tiktok, whatsapp).

There are data roaming services that use 5G GSM modems to transfer the SIMs tower connection to pocket wifi devices for tourists who need data.
