smnrchrds··on Great thread on what’s problematic with Canada’s anti-protest actions
There is no suspension of charter rights. Emergencies Act unambiguously says all charter rights remain in effect.
smnrchrds··on Fred's ImageMagick Scripts
Because with a programming language, you can learn how something works and implement it yourself without copying the implementation. Your implementation will have a similar underlying algorithm but enough differences that it wouldn't be a copy. Algorithm (that is probably not copyrightable) and implementation (that is) are separate. You can use the implementation or you can learn the algorithm and implement it yourself.

With CLI tools, however, there is only one way of doing most things. There is no OOP vs functional, no loop vs comprehension, no choice of data structure, nothing. So commands being copyrightable implies no one can do certain actions with the CLI without a license. Because the only way to do those actions are with the exact command that was copyrighted.

> In Iowa, the average 2013 teacher salary is $33,226. The Illinois average, however, is $37,166, which is above the national average of $36,141. Illinois teachers are (more than) fairly compensated.

Where are you getting these numbers? According to BLS, median pay for elementary and high school teachers are respectively $60,660 and $62,870 per year.

EDIT: There is actually more granular information available as well. Fewer than 10% of elementary school teachers earn less than 40k per year. Probably fewer than 5% earn as much as or less than the 36k number you quoted for national average.

smnrchrds··on Woman appears cured of HIV after umbilical-cord blood transplant
The umbilical cord blood storage industry is under-regulated and untrustworthy, much like another freezing-related industry, cryonics. Both are full of examples of amateurs, bad actors, and mundane issues like bankruptcy resulting in things that were promised to be kept frozen for decades or centuries ending up in waste disposal after 5 years. Like this example from Canada:

The tweet is deleted. Regardless, I am sure not "all" protesters are looking for violence, but the ones who brought weapons and ammo certainly did. And I am sure not all of them have been found and arrested.
smnrchrds··on Names of Canada truck convoy donors leaked after reported hack
Handguns require a license to transport (ATT). Even if they were acquired legally (and that's a very big if because of RPAL), their presence at the border is very illegal.

> there is no violence, and no obvious danger

A number of illegal weapons, high capacity magazines, and a large quantity of ammunition were seized in a blockade in Alberta. I would not be surprised if there are people with weapons in Ottawa as well, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

I am sure Czech healthcare system has been subjectively better in your experience. But I hesitate to call it objectively better than Canada's, given that life expectancy at birth is 3 years shorter in Czechia compared to Canada. Something must be causing the disparity, and usually that tends to be the healthcare.

All the people who have their Google or Apple accounts closed or their Paypal or bank accounts frozen with no explanation and no recourse. All the news about newborns and toddlers being denied boarding planes (or facing extra scrutiny, which is easy to temporarily resolve at the gate when the kid is 3 but becomes harder and harder until impossible to resolve as they get older and reach adulthood) because their name is like someone on the list. The French woman whomwas mistakenly declared officially dead and has been fighting for years to be recognized as alive and be able to renew her driver's license/healthcare coverage/passports/etc.

smnrchrds··on Apple will charge 27% commission for alternative payment systems in Netherlands
It reminds me of ISPs' arguments that Netflix and like should pay more for fast connection to their customers because "otherwise who is gonna pay for the bandwidth?" We the customers do. We pay a high monthly fee for our connection and ISPs want to slow down our traffic to double-dip by charging content providers the access to us. If I pay 1500$ for a phone, I expect Apple to treat me as their customer, not as a resource to be sold to App developers.
smnrchrds··on There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation
That makes perfect sense. My comment was more pointed at those who believe people who have the option to get university degrees and enter white collar careers should instead go into trades, because they would make more money that way. I have seen it often that engineers making 100k are lamenting on HN about studying engineering, saying that if they had gone the trades route they would have earned the same or more from an earlier age and be better off financially. Every thread about university education is full of people advocating steering young people to choose trades over university, because instead of starting their life with a load of debt, they can start earning a good salary at a young age.

And I am sure the above are true for some people going to trades. But unless the average tradesperson's earnings improve significantly, I wouldn't recommend it as a general advice.

smnrchrds··on There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation
> Also I'd say that it starts out pretty well and your earning potential increases quickly, which for a lot of people matters a lot.

I don't understand how that can be the case. Let's say you work as a plumber. The median income is 56k, meaning half the workforce earns less than 56k. There are two ways this can be the case: (1) the field is rapidly expanding and the median is thus artificially low by all the new entrants; (2) the salary of a mid-career plumber is 56k.

You cannot have high salaries over the board (save for the few percent new entrants who have not yet paid their dues) and 56k median income at the same time. Either the public perception about trade salaries is wrong or the BLS is wrong. I don't know which one is the case, but in the absence of better heuristics, I trust BLS more than anecdotes.

smnrchrds··on There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation
If you need to employ N other tradespeople to earn a high income, that means that the ratio of high-income to low-income tradespeople is semi-fixed. If you need to have 9 employees to get 100k income, that means only 10% of the people entering the field will have a chance to earn 100k. In addition, unless N is 2 or 3, it cannot be the case everyone gets a chance at higher incomes in their life; that they will earn lower salaries the first few years but then start earning high salaries when they move up.

So, what is N? Unless it is a low number and almost everyone earns high salaries after a couple of short years, we are doing the next generation a great disservice by encouraging them to get into careers where they destroy their bodies for the benefit of the boss, not themselves.

smnrchrds··on There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation
Do trades even pay that well, or is it just selection bias making them seem like they do?

According to BLS, median annual income for plumbers, electricians, and welders are respectively 56k, 57k, and 44k. Meanwhile, the median kindergarten and elementary school teacher—a famously non-lucrative career among those requiring university education—earns 60k according to the same resource.

smnrchrds··on Germany to admit 400k skilled immigrants annually
Median household income in the US in 2019 was 62,400 EUR (69,560 USD). Median software developer salary in the US was 98,800 EUR (110,100 USD), and the US is known to be uniquely and grossly lucrative for software developers compared to the rest of the world. Considering 60k EUR per year individual income to be too little is a very SF tech area thing to say. As a mechanical engineer in Canada, I cannot relate to that at all.

The best case is never catching COVID again. Even vaccinated people put themselves at risk (albeit less than non-vaccinated people) if they catch COVID intentionally.
