Actually just an average dork.

slickdork··on Delayed Gratification – Proud to Be 'Last to Breaking News'
I suspect the third reason might be that most media is owned by a handful of people. If there's no money in news, why are these companies owned by billionaires?

slickdork··on Don't Become the Machine
>I'll never be a rich man. But I will lead a rich life.

it's interesting how relative this statement is. For a lot of people, being able to lead a rich life means you're already rich; if you're not worrying about money every day (and i mean literally checking your bank account before going to the grocery store), you are rich.

slickdork··on Devin is now generally available
As someone named Devin who works in tech, I greatly hope this project fails. :)
slickdork··on Stanley Kubrick did it his way
King's come around by saying basically it is a good movie but a bad adaption, and he's not wrong. They're two different stories with different characters.
slickdork··on Several piracy-related arrests spark fears of high-level crackdown
I looked up their meta critic scores out of curiosity:

Elemental - Metacritic score of 58/100

The Little Mermaid - Metascore of 59/100

Indiana Jones - Metascore of 58/100

Wish - Metascore of 48/100

Haunted Mansion - of 47/100

slickdork··on Nvidia RTX 5000 graphics cards to launch in 2024 with performance increase
Don't forget to increase energy use by at least 20% too.
slickdork··on Hue Light Hack
I don't understand your use flow there.

I have a hue bridge with a static ip in my house that controls my lights. Management through a third party app is instant.

Are you individually connecting to each light through Bluetooth?

slickdork··on 'Harry Potter' books will be adapted into a decade-long TV series
Oh, dang. The screenwriting she's done for fantastic beasts is not on par with her novel writing.

If she's something like a show runner here with hands on each script, it would make the series suffer. Some people are great at story tellingin one medium but that doesn't always translate.

slickdork··on I don't want streaming music, I just want to stream my music
Weird, I swapped off the platform when they removed it around 2016. They must have reintroduced it?
slickdork··on Effective Spaced Repetition
Could you detail a bit more your gpt4 usage for language learning?

I was wanting to get back into French and thought about using chatgpt, but I'm worried about it's hallucinations and teaching me wrong.

slickdork··on I don't want streaming music, I just want to stream my music
Google music had the system to same upload your own music for a while.
slickdork··on Simple Sabotage Field Manual (1944)
Depends on your political alignment. Superhero movies are basically fascist propaganda (the people who are most powerful will have your best interests in mind and save you, you dear children who enjoy comic books in your adulthood).
slickdork··on Ask HN: Is Anki still the recommended spaced repetition app?
It's the one I still use! Between it's constant updates and plugin support, I have no desire to swap to something new.
slickdork··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2023)
It sounds like you found a problem you're improving. I don't want to stop you. But to me it feels like a bandaid fix, a short term stop gap for a larger issue.

The reason it got a negative response from me is that I look at the problem from a renters point of view, and not an owners. Housing is in short supply, REITs make billions of profit, homelessness is on the rise. And here your selling point is "get a new revenue stream from your tenants".

The solution of negligent owners shouldn't be renters paying more money for yet another middle man just to get their apartment fixed.

slickdork··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2023)
For real, it seems this business asked "How can we make living harder for the majority of the population?"

And found an answer.

slickdork··on The Contradictions of Sam Altman
I'd settle for three examples with sources.
slickdork··on The ChatGPT King Isn’t Worried, but He Knows You Might Be
It ends with him saying his ultimate goal is to funnel the worlds wealth into a non profit, then redistribute it. Kind of terrifying that the future of the world relies on one guy, basically.

I wonder if in his contracts with microsoft, there's a clause saying openAI will never go open source.

slickdork··on 75% of the Most Played Games on Steam Are Playable on the Steam Deck
You're right in your thoughts. It's the perfect form factor for those single player narrative games, especially if you don't own a tv w/ a steamlink or the like. I usually have trouble finishing games, because i'm often distracted. I found when I can't alt tab to the internet, i focus a lot longer on narrative games. The steam deck has been wonderful for me.
slickdork··on My kids and I just played D&D with ChatGPT4 as the DM
I just tried playing Curse of Strahd with chatgpt4. It seems like it generally does okay, but changes so many things for no real reason -- often to determiental levels (ie, the first two characters i ran into knew about artifacts that are spoilers and they shouldn't know anything about, but they said exactly where they where, lol).

I can't wait for an LLM that's built specifically for text adventures like this, when there's a very clear rule set/world/adventure guide like DnD has for modules.

slickdork··on Tailscale Funnel now available in beta
I was about to set up a matrix server with Cloudflare Tunnel, but now I'm going to try funnel instead due to e2ee staying intact.
slickdork··on Cerebras-GPT: A Family of Open, Compute-Efficient, Large Language Models
Not an llm but this 1 click installer for stable diffusion is literally a 1 click installer. Impressively works.

slickdork··on The Diderot Effect
Smart to cut yourself off. Unless you're a production company, it makes most sense to rent the gear for a planned shoot.
slickdork··on Your reading should be messy
When I was a teen, I heard an author say they loved signing clearly well worn copies of their books. Not only did it mean it was not likely going to be resold, but it also meant it was well loved. I've always treated my books roughly since then.

I always carry a paperback in my back pocket, and it's often margin written and beer stained. My favorite books get the worst treatment.

slickdork··on Reflect – App for recording and connecting notes, ideas and contacts
Your product claims to be end to end encrypted. Since it is closed source, do you plan on providing any proof via a third-party security audit?
slickdork··on ChatGPT is laying you off
"They knew that their lives were about to change in ways they couldn't yet imagine. But they also knew that they would face this challenge with the same determination and strength that had made them successful in their roles."

That exact sentance structure/motif shows up in just about all fictional chatgpt outputs. I've played with fiction a lot in chatgpt, and it's so annoying.

slickdork··on Negativity drives online news consumption
Thank you, that's a great way to describe why I always check the news the moment I wake up.
slickdork··on Facebook and Instagram’s paid verification launches in the US
You'd have to pay me to sign up for a meta account.

I'm sad the general population is okay with paying to be the product.

slickdork··on One AI Tutor Per Child: Personalized learning is finally here
Completely agreed.

Once we have consumer level AR, our personal AI could take 'physical' (really just visual) form that follows us around.

slickdork··on Why 'Atomic Habits' may not be working for you
that's kind of exactly what meditation is. Not having a phone/tv/screen/book/human taking your attention.
slickdork··on Multi-Account Containers
Oh wonderful, this will be a very welcome feature for me. :) thanks!
