skhr0680··on EA Open Sources Command and Conquer: Red Alert, along with other games
I'm going to be nice to the net code and say that it has issues because of its age, but multicore CPUs don't cause any issues as far as I know: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS0UL9QC2c4

Fun fact: The real-life inventor of the neutron bomb, Samuel T. Cohen, loved “Repo Man”!

> I think the only thing they had to cut out for legal reasons was the patented shadowing algorithm in Doom 3.

I remember that being somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 LOC to fix, and exactly where to change it was “common knowledge” the moment the source came out

skhr0680··on Q2DOS – Quake 2 backported to MS-DOS
I feel like the difficulty was in that you couldn’t just Google magic spells to make things work, you either knew how to do things or you didn’t. DOS didn’t even have manpages IIRC
skhr0680··on Q2DOS – Quake 2 backported to MS-DOS
Macs could boot from BIOS until circa 2017, and had no trouble booting from a FreeDOS live disc.

What happened? Games from 15-20 years ago thst still look and sound fine now (Crysis, MGS2, HL2, San Andreas off the top of my head) all fit on one DVD
skhr0680··on OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
Dustin Browder was hired by Blizzard to direct StarCraft 2 after directing Generals. That's about as big of an endorsement that I can think of.

Historically, I think it's akin to when Russia conquered Russia and renamed St. Petersburg to Leningrad

BOTW and TOTK are clearly influenced by the look of Ghibli movies, especially Nausica and Laputa. I guess it’s meant to look “2d”.

It's a great understatement to say that the end of the Eastern Bloc could have been handled a whole lot better, especially from the perspective of people who would have been established or even happy with their lives under Communism: age 40+, educated, successful career at the Trabbi factory, just got to the top of the waiting list for an apartment, etc.

skhr0680··on Waymo will bring autonomous vehicles to Tokyo
It’s for liability reasons. The driver is responsible for any damage caused to property or vehicles by passengers opening their door
skhr0680··on They see your photos
You have a to take 1TB of images to be able to take 1GB of images, or something like that (am a semi-retired pro photographer myself).
skhr0680··on Hiroshi Nagai: Japan's Sun-Drenched Americana
It’s funny that you mention that the era of the music. Gen X–Millennials in Japan are likely to associate it with fun but extremely unhip* cafes and restaurants that started disappearing circa 2010 as the women running them hit retirement age.

*The cafes themselves were fine, but their chain smoking, 50-60+ clientele were not the kind of people your average young adult would want to hang out with. There’s only so many times you can get praised for your youth, asked about school or college or your job or when you’re getting married without going crazy. lol

Japanese cameras became popular with pros during the Korean War precisely because they used high-quality materials and had great quality control. A good Leica was still better at the time, but you were much more likely to get a good Nikon.

Isn't ping mostly determined by the physical distance between you and the server?
skhr0680··on How Japanese black companies oppress workers (2014)
> a company could actually sue the employee and win.

It's difficult and costs money to prove that someone is half-assing their job on purpose, and that cost a company a specific dollar amount of losses. It's why they may threaten to sue, but rarely do.

> Other Japan-labor-law fun fact: if you are a contract worker, it is literally illegal for you to quit prior to your contract expiry date. Hope you like that job you signed onto!

It's technically a contract violation, but there are many exceptions that allow you to quit within the first year, and that's assuming the company is totally above board legally (hint: if it's a black company, then they aren't.)

skhr0680··on Japanese workers turn to resignation agencies
> If you have enough paid vacation you could pad that period with your vacation, but it requires pre-acceptance, so cooperation from your employer.

It doesn't necessarily need their cooperation. A letter sent by registered mail saying "I am using my paid leave for x days from y day", then another one saying "I resign on y day + two weeks" is enough. Of course, people would actually need to know and be willing to use their labor rights in order to do that, which is the service that quitting agents are providing.

skhr0680··on 1 in 5 Japanese Workers in Their 20s Turn to Resignation Agencies
People don't want to deal with the fallout of saying that, hence quitting agents
skhr0680··on Voice acting in Space Quest V
> the CD version looking rather more washed out

I remember reading somewhere many, many years ago that the graphics were adjusted to have less colors to work in Windows, which reserved 20/256 colors for system use.

skhr0680··on Voice acting in Space Quest V
Spqce Quest 5 is the only one I go back to. It’s funny, has well-written and memorable characters (for Space Quest), there are few unwinnable situations, and the puzzles rely mostly on human rather than adventure game logic.

On the other hand, it feels like the studio ran out of money while making it. There’s a ton of planets in the game you never visit, it’s not a talkie even though the game before was, and one of the last things you do in the game is a huge trial-and-error maze that is 100% pure padding.

skhr0680··on The English Paradox: Four decades of life and language in Japan
"Other countries have problems too"

OK, let's just give up trying to improve then.

skhr0680··on The English Paradox: Four decades of life and language in Japan
That is exactly what I meant by Galapagos syndrome. I should have written external(= business conducted in English) economic incentive.

The elephant in the room is that 6/12 years school here are focused on rote remembering for the next entrance exam rather than learning.

skhr0680··on Australia proposes ban on social media for those under 16
Countries around the world need to bite the bullet and implement that for voting too.
skhr0680··on The guy who gave a negative review to Battlezone 98 Redux after playing 8k hours
Hot take: You shouldn't be able to leave a negative review after playing the game for the equivalent of working at a full-time job for four years. Maybe after playing for X hours "Negative" should change to "Positive, but suggestions for improvement".
skhr0680··on The English Paradox: Four decades of life and language in Japan
Until Japanese have an economic reason to learn English, they will continue to participate in the educational equivalent of get-rich-quick schemes instead of actually getting good. It's a great example of the "Galapagos syndrome".

There is English education at school, but it is based entirely on rote repetition and exercises instead of y'know, understanding the language. There are "English Conversation Schools", but they are mostly scams whose goal is your continued participation, rather than having an end goal of comprehending English.

skhr0680··on The Influence of Japanese Archaeology on the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Do you dislike sandbox games in general? BOTW’s map felt really designed to have unique, memorable areas and playtested to be “fair” to me, especially the noob area.

> The "grade inflation" that Nintendo fans bestow upon every title the company creates is frustrating, and there's a lot of toxic positivity that drowns out true criticisms. The Zelda Switch titles are nowhere close to 10/10 games.

BOTW is in my top 5 sandbox adventures for sure. TOTK had some good mechanics, but I think reusing the map was a mistake.
