shimonabi··on Pocket Casts goes open source
I was using it a few years ago, but then I switched to Google Podcasts.

I will try it again, because Google Podcasts makes a "pop" sound notification every time it begins to download new episodes and it can't be turned off in the settings. It's very annoying.

shimonabi··on Koch method to learn Morse
A few years ago I tought myself enough in a few days to be able to chat with people on https://morsecode.me/

I've forgotten it almost all now.

shimonabi··on Tell HN: Getting Ready for Unemployment
I always thought it's absurd that people who don't even know what a loop is think they can become professional developers by going into a hip coding bootcamp for a few weeks, when people with years of experience can't get a job.

I've spent a few years unemployed after I quit my shitty job to focus on finishing my degree. I know it's hard to learn new things when you're depressed, but If I were you I would be reading C#/Java/MSSQL/Oracle books and doing example applications by following tutorials. You can find all the materials online, for free.

shimonabi··on Evolution of the Casio G-Shock Origin (2021)
I really like the countdown timer, so I got the W-202-1AVEF.
shimonabi··on Dating Other Task Managers
I currently use Zim + Syncthing and Deck + Calendar on my private Nextcloud.
shimonabi··on New (LTE) Rotary Cell Phone [video]
It's a really nice toy, but where I live I sadly can't afford it.
shimonabi··on Show HN: I may have created a new type of puzzle
Maybe just give a hint that you have to DRAG the animals.

The symbols are very hard to make out when the animals are on them. If this is intentional, then cover them entirely.

shimonabi··on Slovenian OS/2 Warp 4
When I first got an internet dial-up connection in Slovenia with Siol, there was an instruction manual included in the welcome package of how to set it up in OS/2. That's the only time I ever saw a screenshot of that system. I don't know if it was in English or Slovenian.
shimonabi··on Why Does the U.S. Have the Best Research Universities? (2020)
Well, the wars before that caused the whole science thing to happen in the first place because of military usfulness.
shimonabi··on Delphi still exists and is actively developed
I'm working with the Delphi libraries every day in C++ Builder, bucause my company bet on Turbo C++ and Builder in the 90s, when Microsoft technologies seemed primitive compared to it.

At a recent meetup in my country, 90% of Delphi developers were over 60 years old. Also, Embarcadero licenses aren't cheap.

shimonabi··on Helium
My biggest disappoinment is with NPR. They were shilling Helium on their recent podcast. Anderssen Horowitz was even cited as a source in their story.

shimonabi··on Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
It has a small picture-frame-like stand. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us7rKu5SgUI
shimonabi··on Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
Form over functionality.
shimonabi··on Lex Fridman Podcast #309 – John Carmack
He should keep his opinion to himself more. He hasn't yet accomplished anything significant in the world, so nobody really cares what he thinks about particular subjects. He comes off as pompous. I also don't like that he takes crypto seriously.
shimonabi··on The untold story of Yugoslavia’s naturist paradise
In Slovenia the most beautiful beach in my opinion is a designated FKK spot. I just go there clothed and so do 99% of other people. My feeling is that even topless sunbathing is slowly dying out.

Almost every beach has a remote FKK spot that is out of view.

shimonabi··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a changed-your-life moment?
You don't have to be drunk or high to have hallucinations.
shimonabi··on RustDesk – Open-source TeamViewer alternative
I have tried self-hosting this with Docker a couple of weeks ago and it seems to work.

You point the client to your server by including the address in the .exe filename on Windows. Be careful: encryption is not enabled by default.

shimonabi··on MegaPortraits: One-Shot Megapixel Neural Head Avatars
This is so impressive it acutally scares me.
shimonabi··on Visualizing Delaunay Triangulation
I have actually implemented the quad-edge structure and the algorithms from this paper in Python for my undergraduate class.

The problem was when I tried to explain my professor how the thing actually works on an example. The abtract math is very heavy. I barely managed to pass the class.

shimonabi··on It’s 1997 and you want to build a website
I think that was the year I got my first dial-up Internet connection.

I used Frontpage to create my website and learned HTML by viewing the source code. I then used the command line Windows ftp to upload the web site to a 10MB server I got access to for free from the academic network of the primary school. Later I stole a bunch of MIDI-s, animated GIF-s and Javascript code from other websites.

I remember I was pulling my hair out because the images wouldn't transfer correctly. I didn't know I had to switch to binary mode.

shimonabi··on Germany records first monthly trade deficit since 1991 as inflation soars
Merkel said after 2008 that ALL countries in the EU must have surpluses. It was like saying all teams in the NBA must win.
shimonabi··on Germany records first monthly trade deficit since 1991 as inflation soars
Because you are not allowed to beggar-thy-neigbour in a common currency area.

If Germans are allowed to have a permament surplus, than someone MUST always have a deficit.

shimonabi··on Germany records first monthly trade deficit since 1991 as inflation soars
That's a good thing. They've been violating the Euro treaties by running a surplus against other countries in a common currency area, but no one dared to say a word.
shimonabi··on Doom RPG Ported to PC
Thanks! I must confess I've never heard of this game before.
shimonabi··on The Perils of Audience Capture
The video-streaming community is turning into a freak show.

I've read about this guy yesterday and a few days before I saw a girl who has anorexia and is using it to build her fanbase.

shimonabi··on Doom RPG Ported to PC
Why can't someone create simple instructions of how to run this thing?
shimonabi··on Motorola 6800
At our company we still use a MC68HC11 for an industrial device.
shimonabi··on TerraUSD crash led to vanished savings, shattered dreams
Which are broad index funds?

I put a tiny amount of my savings in a pharma ETF last year and got destroyed almost as much as crypto. I hope it recovers soon.

shimonabi··on TITO: Electric Argentine car
In Yugoslavia, there was a slogan in the 80's: "After Tito, Tito".
shimonabi··on Ask HN: What do you use VMs for regularly?
I just recently spun up 16 Linux VMs in Virtualbox to simulate industrial scales connecting to my desktop software using Python and performing measurements. I wrote several scripts to copy Python code to each machine with scp and control them using Bash with WSL2 on Windows.
