shiftpgdn··on FTC sues Amazon for illegally maintaining monopoly power
AWS works this way too but I’ll get dogpiled by Amazon sycophants and other people who have built their careers around getting witless companies sucked into the Amazon machine.
shiftpgdn··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
Singapore does this very well. Almost no property tax or land value tax for primary residence for Singapore citizens. Up to 30% property/LVT for corporations and foreigners.
shiftpgdn··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
People wouldn’t have left and could have steered the political situation to something less insane.
shiftpgdn··on Tell HN: ChatGPT cut off date now Jan 2022
That's because OpenAI keeps punching holes in the brain of ChatGPT to eliminate anything that might be controversial.
shiftpgdn··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
Android is notorious for aging out phones much faster than Apple. You could use 8+ year old phones with the latest security updates up until very recently.
shiftpgdn··on The new Polaroid I-2 instant camera
You can 3d print a modified instax wide back for some medium format cameras. Hasselblad has always had an instant film back with some minor modifications. The photos look amazing.
shiftpgdn··on Are self-driving cars already safer than human drivers?
You’re talking out of both sides of your mouth here. Even the greatest test suite on the planet will miss edge cases in the real world. Self driving cars are already 99.999% successful and effectively perfect in simulation.
shiftpgdn··on Are self-driving cars already safer than human drivers?
“Why are there still bugs in our software the developers have a dev environment and a test suite”
shiftpgdn··on Dolby Atmos will use your TV to expand living room speaker setups
There is an exception here with AppleTV+ which has a 20-40Mbit/s bit rate. Not quite Blu-ray level but it's very obvious when compared to Netflix.
shiftpgdn··on Hundreds of thousands trafficked to work as online scammers in SE Asia, says UN
This isn’t new, but it’s good to continue to report on it. I remember even back in 2005 it was generally well known that the gold farmers in World of Warcraft were likely Chinese prison labor. There were even a few articles about it: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/chinese-pr...
shiftpgdn··on The real cost of a preventive health scan goes well beyond the price tag
This is a better philosophical test than the trolly problem.
shiftpgdn··on The real cost of a preventive health scan goes well beyond the price tag
This doesn't make any sense to me. It's either a problem or it isn't unless doctors are willing to admit they perform lots of unnecessary procedures already.
shiftpgdn··on ‘Broken’ solar panels manufactured to deter criminals in South Africa
You should ask South Africans of any race if they preferred the "colonialism and apartheid" or what they have now.
shiftpgdn··on Hackers can use credit bureaus to dox nearly anyone in America
I had DeleteMe for a year. It was pretty good but for whatever reason "whitepages . com" would continue to publish all of my PII and even DeleteMe couldn't take care of it.
shiftpgdn··on Someone needs to save the Internet Archives from the lawyers and I have an idea
Most rights holders were happy to look past it until Chuck Wendig started crying about people being able to read his pulp sci-fi too easily.
shiftpgdn··on Upcoming .com and .xyz domain price increase
The people on here complaining about a $1/year price increase while earning $400,000/year as a software engineer never fail to make me laugh.
shiftpgdn··on Upcoming .com and .xyz domain price increase
Domains are a loss leader product for everyone in the internet/hosting industry. Porkbun’s goal is to get you to buy secondary products.
shiftpgdn··on Judge denies HP's plea to throw out all-in-one printer lockdown lawsuit
Everyone seems to repeat that brother lasers are the way to go, but I’ve found that for home use (photos and documents) that the canon eco tank is superior to the brother is basically every way.
shiftpgdn··on Illegal raids contribute to death of newspaper co-owner
You are delusional if you think corrupt policing only happens in America.
shiftpgdn··on Car Bloat: “Huge Cars Are Terrible for Society”
This should be obvious to anyone with eyes too. Go look at a neighborhood with no or low through traffic and extremely old roads are in good condition. Meanwhile a nearby through-fare, unless constantly repaired and patched, will be falling apart.
shiftpgdn··on Concrete, asphalt and urban heat islands add to the misery of heat waves
Cleaning up leaves, roots, etc
shiftpgdn··on Concrete, asphalt and urban heat islands add to the misery of heat waves
I live in a bedroom suburb that is known for its thick tree cover. It was one of the driving factors for me to move here, as well as the fact our area is significantly cooler than the nearby city.

There is a constant battle where retirees who have moved out here want to cut down all the trees because they are “a nuisance.”

shiftpgdn··on Disney discontinues DVD and Bluray production in Australia
My prosumer cinema camera (sigma fp) records video with individual dng files and a wav for audio. I think it’s not that unusual.
shiftpgdn··on Another Joke Fine Shows US Authorities Do Not Take Illegal Telemarketing Serious
The people working in these call centers know what they're doing by defrauding the most vulnerable members of our society and should be considered enemy combatants if their host government is unwilling to act on their crimes.
shiftpgdn··on Even people who bought Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses don’t want to use them
It doesn't roll continuously, but I can press a button and it starts recording. Something I would have missed, especially with little kids, I can now capture.
shiftpgdn··on Another Joke Fine Shows US Authorities Do Not Take Illegal Telemarketing Serious
I get something to the order of 60-100 spam calls a day regarding medicare benefits (my number has somehow been associated with a retiree who shares my name). I fully support drone strikes on overseas call centers.
shiftpgdn··on Another Joke Fine Shows US Authorities Do Not Take Illegal Telemarketing Serious
I hold an electricians license in Texas and get an absolute truckload of spam texts and calls with regard to my license renewals. What's a good way for me to get started with doing research on how to start filing litigation?
shiftpgdn··on Even people who bought Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses don’t want to use them
I am convinced all the naysayers here haven’t even given them a shot. I got a pair a year ago and use them all the time, it’s like a dash cam for my head. I’ve taken a ton of video and photos with mine and absolutely love them for phone calls and music.

I do wish they were water proof and had more battery life, but. Otherwise they’re great.

shiftpgdn··on Netscape Meteors
This used to exist. There was a whole ecosystem of silly Netscape animation replacements available.
shiftpgdn··on My journey away from the JAMstack
No, you asked for a free comparison. If you want to go to paid features netlify loses by a mile. You can search all of this yourself with all of one google query.
