shiftpgdn··on The "$60 Gaming PC" – AMD BC-250 (2025)
How is it a scam to sell something for more than the cost to make it? Labor and energy are not free you know.
shiftpgdn··on Show HN: Moongate – Ultima Online server emulator in .NET 10 with Lua scripting
I still think 90% of what made UO unique is the fact there was no Google or central repository of expert knowledge. Yes, UOStratics existed, but it wasn't perfect. A lot of the fun was in the fact basically nobody knew the BEST way to play, and therefore everyone was just doing whatever they thought was fun.
shiftpgdn··on Emails to Outlook.com rejected due to a fault or overzealous blocking rules
This is an extremely widespread issue. I send close to a million emails per month across dozens of different providers (all newsletters.) These are all from high reputation domains and email accounts. We are completely unable to make anything happen with Microslop. It is infuriating.
shiftpgdn··on Adoption of EVs tied to real-world reductions in air pollution: study
Just buy one and remove the SIM card.
shiftpgdn··on Tiny Core Linux: a 23 MB Linux distro with graphical desktop
This is cool. My first into to a practical application of Linux in the early 2000s was using Damn Small Linux to recover files off of cooked Windows Machines. I looked up the project the other day while reminiscing and thought it would be interesting if someone took a real shot at reviving the spirit of the project.
shiftpgdn··on Fine dining restaurants researching guests to make their dinner unforgettable
That's ok, you'll get the same treatment everyone else got before they started this trend. "Normies" with their lives on the standard socials will get extra attention or special treatment at no detriment to you.
shiftpgdn··on Evidence of a 12,800-year-old shallow airburst depression in Louisiana
There is a lot of dogma in academia too!!
shiftpgdn··on Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft and people are paying anyway
They get paid $300 (may be different these days) if you like in the car. The financial incentive for making you puke is quite high.
shiftpgdn··on Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft and people are paying anyway
Why did you cancel on the Tesla Model Y?
shiftpgdn··on Tesla Cybertruck Drives Itself into a Pole, Owner Says 'Thank You Tesla'
It’s fantastic and Tesla service has been really good for the one issue I had over the last 12 months. My wife bought a Model Y in 2021 so it’s the second Tesla in the house.
shiftpgdn··on Tesla Cybertruck Drives Itself into a Pole, Owner Says 'Thank You Tesla'
I too have FSD 13 on my CT and use it for 99% of driving with no issues. I have done a number of long city to city drives (30-100+ miles) with zero interventions. The roads would be 10,000x safer if every car was using FSD, even in extreme edge cases like the original post.
shiftpgdn··on Tesla Cybertruck Drives Itself into a Pole, Owner Says 'Thank You Tesla'
I like that you've built a strawman for anyone who might disagree with you. "Oh there aren't any positive reviews they're just fanboys." You may as well write "Anyone who disagrees with me is wrong."
shiftpgdn··on Cities can cost effectively start their own utilities
What is PG&Es generation cost vs administrative and legal overhead? The 11% margin isn't a good basis number. How is other states like Texas or Colorado are delivering at 10-12c/kwh ?

I do agree with your sentiment that city bureaucrats may be tempted to raid the energy business to pay for pet projects and other things. This can be protected against by segmenting the energy business into its own protected organization.

shiftpgdn··on WordPress Is in Trouble
Pressable includes support, global caching, and a bunch of other things you won't get on a $5/month VPS. Also not everyone wants to play system administrator 7 days a week to keep their server from getting hijacked or nuked.
shiftpgdn··on Mullenweg Shuts Down WordPress Sustainability Team, Igniting Backlash
Yes? There are without exaggeration 1000+ companies offering WordPress hosting. It's a replaceable product. Nothing WPEngine offers is unique or special. WordPress itself is an entire ecosystem.
shiftpgdn··on A Better Light Source for Scanning Color Negative Film
Drum scanning is crazy time consuming and expensive. I shoot hundreds (sometimes thousands) of film photos per year and 99.999% of my scanning is done with a camera and a backlight.
shiftpgdn··on Investigating corrupt Winamp skins
I used to use Litestep on 2000 and XP, it had such a big community and feature set.
shiftpgdn··on Mercedes-Benz high-power charging goes large at Starbucks
Audi/Porsche EVs can do 350kw at peak, so almost!
shiftpgdn··on Battery-swap networks are preventing emergency blackouts
The Lightning has plenty of times since I am confident I could get it repaired or replaced easily. The Cybertruck... not so much.
shiftpgdn··on Battery-swap networks are preventing emergency blackouts
Tesla has a V2H/V2G (Powershare is the name Tesla uses) available for Cybertruck owners included as part of the vehicle purchase. I am still waiting on mine, despite receiving my Cybertruck almost 6 months ago.

I also have the Ford equipment from when I got my Lightning, however finding a competent installer has been impossible. Right now it's collecting spiders in the corner of my garage.

shiftpgdn··on Students invent quieter leaf blower
Hating on a universal annoyance isn’t NIMBY behavior.
shiftpgdn··on Dragonfly: An optical telescope built from an array of off-the-shelf Canon lens
Can someone smarter than me explain why astronmers can't stick something like this on the back of an existing geostationary platform (like what is used for the XM radio sattelites) and get amazing data out of them? Surely sticking something like this array 100km into space will yield better results without the overhead of a 20 year mission plan like James Webb or Hubble.
shiftpgdn··on Volvo landed a cheap Chinese EV on U.S. shores in a trade war
With the economy slowing and a lot of families feeling the inflation crunch I think traditional US and German automakers are going to be in huge trouble when facing Chinese made EVs in the open market. How could BMW sell a 3 series for $30,000-50,000 when you can buy a BYD HAN for half the cost, while it's arguably more luxurious? At least Tesla can fall back on long term subscription revenue from FSD, the rest of the legacy manufacturers are going to be annihilated.
shiftpgdn··on I made an open source Windows app to rewind and search everything on screen
This could easily be sold for $5/seat to giant corporations who want to stick spyware all over their employee workstations.
shiftpgdn··on Intel Gaudi 3 AI Accelerator
Dingboard runs off of the owner's pile of used gamer cards. The owner frequently posts about it on twitter.
shiftpgdn··on Anatomy of a credit card rewards program
Ironically this may have been true at one time but Amex is now one of the best card providers to deal with as a merchant as they have a very clear and transparent dispute and then appeals process. Visa/Chase seem to be impossible to win.
shiftpgdn··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
Thanks, I got caught by auto-correct. :)
shiftpgdn··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
If you ask to borrow $500 and I give it to you, and you run off with the money with no intent to ever pay me back, did you commit fraud? Or was I just a rube who should have known better?

You seem to wish to live in a zero trust world model where everyone is out to scam everyone at all times and "caveat emptor" if you do get scammed. We should do our best as a society to not turn into that.

shiftpgdn··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
I think ruining thousands of lives through fraud without remorse constitutes a threat to society. He should never see the light of day again.
shiftpgdn··on US Media Is Collapsing
I think most people in the US rightfully have a total disdain for the media. The vast majority of articles are clickbait, propaganda or are outright wrong. Many big organizations (Hearst) have outsourced the majority of local reporting to the third world countries where they can pay pennies on the dollar.
