shemnon42··on On the bare necessity of psychological safety
> usually people with advanced degrees from hard-to-get-into colleges and years of experience along with very specialized knowledge.

Maybe 2005 Google, but not anymore. A good bachelors degree or enough YoE at most companies gets you the interview, and then the interview result usually does the rest. Those are the "line engineers" that move on to other faangs or unicorns when psychological safety becomes an issue.

Typically it's the people from the hard-to-get-into colleges, or with years of company tenure, or with specialized knowledge causing the psychological safety issues.

shemnon42··on Google’s copying of the Java SE API was fair use [pdf]
That is the order scotus considered it.
shemnon42··on Google’s copying of the Java SE API was fair use [pdf]
So in programmer speak

    if (!isFairUse(workUnderInvestigation) && copyrightable(originalWork)) {
      bigCopyrightPayout();
    }
Short circuit on the and operator. It's fair use, so copyrightable will not be evaluated. Evaluating copyrightable has an obervable side effect of creating a precedent.
shemnon42··on Service end for Bintray, JCenter, GoCenter, and ChartCenter
It's been communicated since their SwampUp conference in August, just not very well publicized until this announcement.

The "no writes after 28 Feb" is a new twist...

shemnon42··on Cryptocurreny crime is way ahead of regulators and law enforcement
It's also by Nouriel Roubini, a well known crypto critic. Keep those biases in mind as you read his work.

Three a week? What SVP did your group piss off? Or are they back to the 4 rejects per hire game?
shemnon42··on States bring action against Google under federal and state antitrust laws [pdf]
Not quite after he exited. It was while he was Chairman of the Board, and in at least one instance he used his Google email to engage in political work that would get any other Googler sanctioned, but got a pass because he's Eric Schmidt. Had he used personal emails in all cases it would have been ok per corporate rule.

The rest of your claims are indeed tin-foil hat worthy.

shemnon42··on The Man Who Found Forrest Fenn's Treasure
Use a HSM like a yubikey or Google titan key to sign the message. There are modes where the key is generated on-device and not (without significant hacking) recoverable off device.

Then physically hide the key with said treasure.

shemnon42··on Diem – A rebrand of Facebook’s Libra
Currently a deeply Facebook project, like Kubernetes was a deeply Google project until RedHat joined in. This rebranding and the association in general makes that kind of a transition smoother.
shemnon42··on Google illegally spied on workers before firing them, US labor board alleges
What's the point of a $3000 contract review if the employer's response will be "Not changing it, sign or walk."
shemnon42··on Metal monolith found by helicopter crew in Utah desert
television ratios joke. 4:3 became 16:9 for widescreen. Further from square and closer to the "golden ratio", so make something closer with different prime squares.

1:22:33 becomes 1:33:77

shemnon42··on Coinbase Card
Only if people re-use bitcoin addresses, or deal with people who re-use addresses. If there is one thing I would change about the protocol it would be to prohibit address reuse. There are techniques like HD wallets that allow you to do this.

Anonymity is part of the censorship resistance. You can't censor something you don't know about. Along the lines of "Can't Be Evil" vs "Don't Be Evil"
shemnon42··on We chose Java for our high-frequency trading application

This is a good example of "Poe's Law"

> without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied.

shemnon42··on Sun's JavaFX Mobile smartphone, the Neo 1973 (2007)
Not presumably, it does. They are shipping it. Have been shipping it since at least last year. Ahead of Time compilation is how they get around the no-JIT rule.
shemnon42··on The vast but little-known fund of the Mormon Church
You are more likely to clean up your kid's goldfish crackers they spilled in the pews (or not give them goldfish during worship service to begin with) when you take a turn vacuuming the chapel yourself.
shemnon42··on The vast but little-known fund of the Mormon Church
It's the first amendment and separation of church and state. The IRS is fairly certain that if they tried to tax the land chapels are on that the supreme court (even the liberal judges) would say it violates church and state separation. Shutting down a church for failure to pay taxes is the end game the courts won't allow, and so where we are basically falls out from that.

Now if you run a for-profit child care center out of your chapel and don't pay taxes, that is something the IRS has seized a church for.

shemnon42··on Google is finally killing off Chrome apps, which nobody really used
Wait what? Edge doesn't support ActiveX controls? Why didn't I notice until now?
shemnon42··on Ask HN: Are RSUs worth your loyalty?
Only if you are an executive. Rank and file tend to get the short end, which means you lose RSUs whether you leave voluntarily (took another job) or involuntarily (fired for cause, fired for no cause, or laid off).
shemnon42··on Supreme Court rules federal courts cannot invalidate partisan gerrymandering [pdf]
And then it would be the legislative branch mandating anti-gerrymandering, which according to today's ruling is the branch that should be doing it. So Gov Newsom totally should do it.
shemnon42··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
Not many first time home buyers do a standard mortgage now. Typically 3-5% is all that is needed.

That and the lowest home mortgages rates anyone alive has seen have contributed to the home price increase. It's not the total value of the house but the amount of the monthly payment that is the driver, and 3% (today) vs 13% (early 80s) mortgage rates provide a huge swing.

shemnon42··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
If by "marketing department" you mean "advertising business" you would be correct. But I am skeptical you meant that.
shemnon42··on Google Cloud CEO says that he’s borrowing from the Oracle playbook
Harsh criticism for Couchbase, to win that poll by beating Oracle.
shemnon42··on Oracle Swings the Layoff Axe
Check your employment paperwork. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. To make you pay it back after just hiring is a jerk move, but not all executives are kind.
