shaunsingh0207··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
This has been something I've been incredibly pleased with on the apple silicon SOC's. Albeit slowly, being able to load large datasets or blender scenes on a portable, efficient laptop and still being able to use the GPU is a nice touch.

Of course performance wise it doesn't touch the $1k+ graphics cards with crazy amounts of ram, but for students and if I need to do something quick on the go, its a really useful tool.

shaunsingh0207··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
I'm loving it. I used cheap risc-v boards for several of my projects, most notably a GD32V in my keyboard. The equivalent stm boards weren't too expensive, mostly in the 10-20$ range, but weren't as easily available (and 10$ is still 3x the price of the chinese risc board)

Though the rp2040 has largely ended my cheap risc-v addiction

shaunsingh0207··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
Apple also entirely drops 32-bit from their arm systems
shaunsingh0207··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
7nm yes, 5nm/4nm not as much, apple pretty much bought out the entirety of 3nm. 7nm is a relatively mature process at this point.
shaunsingh0207··on Apple is convinced my dog is stalking me
Whenever I get on the subway, right after I exit the train I get a notification that my MacBook's left behind at the train station I boarded at. That makes sense then
shaunsingh0207··on Apple is convinced my dog is stalking me
I have an AirTag in my bag and it beeps maybe twice a day for no apparent reason, It'll be in the same room as me, I have my phone with me, and I'm in this same room every day. It doesn't send me the notification the bag is "lost", it just starts beeping.
shaunsingh0207··on Apple is convinced my dog is stalking me
On the iCloud family settings page you can enable/disable sharing your location with the rest of your family. I imagine AirTags would be the same.

That being said, if you aren't comfortable with family members knowing your location, then why would you want to share AirTags or an iCloud with them in the first place?

shaunsingh0207··on Microsoft Teams is getting big performance improvements next month
It is, that and if you want to get something out of the door quickly then electron is a good way to do it. Part of that is web tech is higher level than writing qt/gtk apps, and part of that is the additional developers that you mentioned.

Developers that know how to make native desktop apps well are a dying breed

shaunsingh0207··on Microsoft Teams is getting big performance improvements next month
I recently switched to linux part-time and I haven't found an electron app thats better than its web PWA counterpart. Discord, slack, and spotify specifically seem to run much better in the browser.

On macOS I wouldn't dare run discord in the browser because then I lose quite a few features, but on Linux those features aren't supported at all anyways!

shaunsingh0207··on In Praise of Alpine and APK
uutils or busybox instead of coreutils, musl, ash instead of bash (or really any non-gnu posix compliant shell, theres lots) and clang instead of gcc.
shaunsingh0207··on Professor writes history essays with ChatGPT and has students correct them
The opposite is also possible (and what I'm hoping for): Humans come up with the ideas, write out some boiler plate code etc. and let AI fill in the blanks.
shaunsingh0207··on C-rusted: The advantages of Rust, in C, without the disadvantages
Code reviews are great, competent programmers are also great. Even the best programmers make mistakes.

Additionally, the easier memory safety is, the more time those competent programmers can devote to work on new ideas instead of babysitting code.

what is this thread lmao
shaunsingh0207··on Steam now allows you to copy games over a local network to another PC
that isn't quite the same, ds download play sent a small multiplayer-only to the guest device, independent of the host device. Remote play merely streams your whole session over.

The only thing close for the PC market I can think of is It Takes Two and its "Friends Pass"

shaunsingh0207··on Z-Library Returns on the Clearnet in Full Hydra-Mode
https://annas-archive.org does a lot of this, and has been my go-to for books for a while now.
shaunsingh0207··on Remastered 'Myst Mobile' Game Now Available on iPhone and iPad
This is a mobile release. Proton runs on desktop machines, and the "new" Myst on steam works just fine on macOS and apple silicon devices.
shaunsingh0207··on The Rust Implementation of GNU Coreutils Is Becoming Remarkably Robust
I currently build my nixOS packages with musl, clang, and uutils, and the difference from gcc/coreutils/glibc is unnoticeable. The uutils project is great
shaunsingh0207··on Hardcoded Folder Icons in macOS
/System/Developer still exists, though it doesn't contain anything

/Library/Developer is where Xcode's Command-line tools install too, your apple sdk's, along with a copy of clang, swift, and git

Neither of them seem to have cool icons though

shaunsingh0207··on Hardcoded Folder Icons in macOS
Another similar example, blowing into the microphone would spin the title name around on 3ds games (and poking/blowing at random things in game would sometimes do fun stuff too!)

Those tiny details and fun little things here and there are what people remember in 10-20 years. I wish developers did them more

shaunsingh0207··on Why Steam Deck Is One of the Most Significant PC Gaming Moments in Years
Only cpu instructions have to be translated, graphics are "native" in the sense both the previous AMD and Intel GPU's used metal and openGL, just as the new integrated gpu's do.
shaunsingh0207··on Nintendo Will Pay Its Workers 10% More
They make desktop-class mobile gpu's, but nothing like the switch. However, they do still make embedded dev kits (https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/autonomous-machines/embedded-sy...), with their newest ones running on ampere.

The Jetson nano is the same chip as the nintendo switch, with half the cuda cores iirc.

shaunsingh0207··on StreetPass: Find Your People on Mastodon
Indeed the name is a bit misleading if you go by the 3ds' streetpass, it's not what Nintendo did. I just had a few good memories with streetpass, so seeing the name again (even in a different context) brought me some joy :)
shaunsingh0207··on Mozilla's Abandoned Servo Web Engine Is Making a Comeback in 2023
The servo project was always just a test bed. When the team was laid off, useful parts made it into firefox, and the rest got branched out into its own repository and project, now available on GitHub. Namely, the Stylo css engine was fully integrated.
shaunsingh0207··on High performance RISC-V CPU
I wouldn't say arm is screwing around, apple silicon is no joke. The thing is that the M1/M2/etc. cpus are incredibly good partly because of their raw cpu performance, but also because of the big/little design and the extra niceties (amx, etc.)

If you're going to add your own instructions anyways, then why go risc-v over arm?

shaunsingh0207··on StreetPass: Find Your People on Mastodon
I love the name, Nintendo's StreetPass was such a cool tool. It was awesome just finding someone random to play with in an airport or waiting room.
shaunsingh0207··on Google announces ChatGPT rival Bard, with wider availability in ‘coming weeks’
It'll probably still fail to set my kitchen timer, but now It'll have a poetic snarky response to go with it
shaunsingh0207··on The technology behind GitHub’s new code search
I have this issue with GitHub code search very often. I'll search up a function to see some examples of how to use it, and the first 20 or so pages of results are just copies of the source where its defined.
shaunsingh0207··on The Violin Doctor
Theres quite a few parameters to evoking the sounds and emotions you want from an instrument. We've been able to do it on computers for years, thats what vst's are after all (and modern modeled piano vst's sound incredible). In the end, playing a midi control is still easier than inputting all of those parameters manually though.

> But, to some extent, some of the music, even if performed by a computer with software with a human using the software as a tool does have a future.

Pretty much every modern song is made this way, isn't it? Apart from "live" recordings I'd wager every piano pop song in the last decade was recorded on a VST with a midi controller.

shaunsingh0207··on The Violin Doctor
As someone who plays violin and piano, it's a similar experience. The more expensive violins will certainly sound better (at the minimum, they are usually more resonant), and it's much easier to evoke the emotion you'd like. The diminishing returns hit hard though, above a certain price you're paying for the history and brand.

The steinway's are wonderful instruments aren't they! I've been dreaming about it and recently had the opportunity to buy a personal NY model B and I don't regret it. The joy it brings you when complex sounds are so easy to get out the instrument, it's priceless.

shaunsingh0207··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
I've found Orion wonderful as well. It fixes all my extension gripes with safari while still keeping the performance and battery life.
