shaunsingh0207··on Show HN: ADHD-friendly Pomodoro web app
now I'd spend all my time turning the dial and overengineering its replacement :(
shaunsingh0207··on Game Over: Steam won’t Run on Windows 7 and 8 after January 2024
Did you update your macbook? Any MacOS install 10.15 and later can't run 32-bit apps, which half life is.

Anyways, get a copy of bootcamp and black mesa, then enjoy half life in all of its updated source 2 glory

shaunsingh0207··on Paving the Road to Vulkan on Asahi Linux
note that the proprietary extensions are extremely unlikely to gain linux support though, unless upstream arm adopts something similar

though amx won’t help out with emulation much

shaunsingh0207··on Fake Samsung 980 Pro SSDs are spreading around
Whats the point of getting a 980 pro if you're going to disable the cache? Don't disable cache, prevent unclean shutdowns
shaunsingh0207··on Flux Keyboard
E-ink gets exponentially more expensive with size, and an e-ink panel in this keyboard would have to have a fairly decent resolution and refresh rate, whereas the price tags are usually 1-bit color, low res, and barely have to refresh
shaunsingh0207··on Flux Keyboard
Saw your project a few days back, absolutely loved it! Same-ish setup here, a massive e-ink screen hooked up to a controller and pine64 board. I hung it up next to my bed, displays my most important emails/weather/health-notifs etc., everything I need in the morning to get up and running

The cost of the panel makes me cry but there's nothing like e-ink :)

shaunsingh0207··on Flux Keyboard
E-ink is extremely expensive, especially at the size of a keyboard like that. Memory LCD would be more practical, but at that point the lcd costs the same and offers more power for those who want it.

There isn't anything stopping you from making the entire screen black except for the legends, probably

shaunsingh0207··on The Quest for Netflix on Asahi Linux
In the end yes, although it was much easier to get working than the authors adventures with firefox
shaunsingh0207··on The Quest for Netflix on Asahi Linux
raspotify/spotifyd aren't alternative desktop clients, they're connect clients, great if you want to modern-ify an old amplifier, but not useful for streaming.

All of the native desktop clients (psst, spot, etc) are missing quite a few features compared to the official client, and spotify-tui is nowhere near as nice to use.

shaunsingh0207··on Show HN: Lofi, a Tiny Spotify Player
Spotify-tui is the only one that implements connect functionality, and even then it doesn't have the extended auto-mixes that spotify plays when you're playlist ends.

I'm glad there are options for alternative native clients, but none of them are anywhere near feature parity with the official client

shaunsingh0207··on The Quest for Netflix on Asahi Linux
I was looking into this very problem yesterday! Terribly scared by widewine, I ended up building webkit with eme support enabled, then enabled the relevent setting in the nyxt browser. Seems to be working fine so far.
shaunsingh0207··on RustPython – A Python-3 (CPython >= 3.11.0) Interpreter written in Rust
Yes, through a `build.rs` file and crates such as `pkg-config`. Quite a few projects depends on c/c++ source and are merely rust bindings. However, the majority of crates don't require external dependencies
shaunsingh0207··on Mario Kart Tour Triggers You into Gambling Your Money
Noone buys both versions of the pokemon game though, its always been a nice novelty. Me and my mates always used to get opposite games so we could trade everything up. Its good fun.
shaunsingh0207··on Van Gogh, AMD’s Steam Deck APU
It was originally with microsoft, to go in a surface device, then that fell through and the steam deck picked it up. Not general use persay, but microsoft's general use
shaunsingh0207··on Van Gogh, AMD’s Steam Deck APU
It was developed for general laptop use, and valve just happened to have the perfect use case for it.
shaunsingh0207··on For every 100 iPhones, Apple sells 26 iPads, 17 Apple Watches, 35 AirPods
Thats an absolutely huge phone to airpod conversion rate, though I wonder how many of those airpods were purchased by 1 user? most people I know with airpods lose them ocassionally and own more than one pair
shaunsingh0207··on Tell HN: My son is being bullied for owning an Android phone
telegram doesn't come by default on my phone. getting a teenager to download telegram or duo or <insert other platform here> is hard. The power of facetime is any kid with an iphone has the ability to immediately video call any other kid with an iphone.

I'm not saying its a good thing. I despise that its practically impossible to have a social life without an iphone in a lot of urban american schools. Just know that by not budging and not getting your kid an iphone, you are causing them frustration and potentialy making them lose out on a significant part of their childhood.

shaunsingh0207··on Could we make the web more immersive using a simple optical illusion?
I bought a new 3ds and it was absolute bliss. The mario bros 3d game was incredibly intuitive to play, that 3ds has spoiled any 3d platformer for me. I tried playing the new 3d game on the switch and even though it has shadows, I kept missing platforms etc.

I think the original 3ds's lack of tracking is what turned it off for most people, though.

shaunsingh0207··on Could we make the web more immersive using a simple optical illusion?
The thing is with the wiimote (atleast with motion plus) and the switch, nintendo really tuned in the motion. I think you can give anyone age 5-99 a wiimote (or a joycon), say play bowling or tennis, and they can pick it up within a few second

Barely anyone else puts the effort into getting gestures right. Part of that is the developers spend so long developing the gestures, they don't know whats natural and whats not anymore.

Big example is windows precision drivers. In theory they should be more natural, in practice they are terrible.

shaunsingh0207··on Tell HN: My son is being bullied for owning an Android phone
Facetime however doesn't, and if I was a high schooler with a girlfriend thats likely what I'd use. That and gamepigeon "games", group chats, a fair bit of stuff thats a nonissue to older people but to high schoolers is absolutely nessecary for relationships to function

... are you really going to use email or irc in high school

shaunsingh0207··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
I've been running the `psst` spotify app on my M1 the last few days and its great.

Sadly I miss out on spotify connect and all of the social/playlist features. I'd love to use the web version, but firefox doesn't support drm on arm, and I can't seem to get webkitgtk to compile with EME support.

shaunsingh0207··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
the 1440p screen on my macbook looks incredible on macOS. Apple has been on top of the font rendering game for a long time now
shaunsingh0207··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
Both teams and zoom on macOS seem to encode/decode on the gpu for me, as well as meets over chrome
shaunsingh0207··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
I'm dearly missing support for the fingerprint reader on asahi, thuogh its likely never going to be supported.
shaunsingh0207··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
My macbook pro was rated for 18 hours and I find it very easily meets or exceeds that number if I'm working on general tasks.

Of course if its a day where I'm compiling often and have several tasks running its going to be lower, but thats not the usecase they advertise

shaunsingh0207··on ARM64 Linux Workstation
I find under load its the same, idle power consumption is higher. It seems linux doesn't have the same level of delegation on powerformance/effeciency cores that apple manages with macOS
shaunsingh0207··on The extensible vi layer for Emacs
On a thread about emacs, you posted about telling people to use vim. why do it if you aren't trying to get emacs users to use vim?

If someone told me to change my workflow just to use the same bindings, that gives me every reason not to do it more.

shaunsingh0207··on The extensible vi layer for Emacs
Its certainly possible, though useless.

Most vim emulation plugins struggle with accuracy, EVIL exceeds it. Manly due to evil-collection and various other packages, pretty much every emacs package has evil support, and that integration feels very native to emacs

This is a case where being a neovim gui would be worse. Though, someone could totally do it for shits and giggles.

Finally, that operating system would have a decent text editor :)

shaunsingh0207··on The extensible vi layer for Emacs
Neovim isn't emacs, and you can't make it emacs no matter how hard you try - Emacs is writen mainly in lisp, neovim has a lot of c. You don't have to worry about if something is possible in emacs, you can just hack onto it, on neovim you have to spend an awful lot of time seeing if something is possible - Emacs has decades of ecosystem, neovim does not - Emacs is build on lisp and has first class support, fennel is a second class citizen in neovim, users are exepcted to (rightfully) figure their own way through things. Whereas the internet is full of decades of elisp knowledge - Emacs is a proper GUI. neovim is not, yet.

In the future, can neovim match and exceed emacs? yes. Is it capable of it? yes.

It however, is not currently is not an emacs replacement in any way shape or form. It is an entirely different editor, with a different way of going about things, and should be treated as such.

This is coming from someone who often contributes to neovim and neovide (a neovim GUI), and uses fennel both inside and outside of neovim extensively.

shaunsingh0207··on Ask HN: What low-tech way do you use to manage competing tasks/to-dos
Device is a remarkable2, its synced via https://github.com/ddvk/rmfakecloud, and handwritting recognition / org-export using tesseract and a small rust wrapper

Definitely not low-tech, but I just can't go back to paper. Its nice being able to search up what were your todo's on a certain date and keep digital track of what you missed :)
