sgdesign··on Ask HN: Simple single page application framework?
If you were building a full SPA I'd suggest http://vulcanjs.org, but if you specifically don't want to deal with React and Meteor then maybe you need something closer to https://github.com/stimulusjs/stimulus ?
sgdesign··on The curious star appeal of Jordan Peterson
> In 2016 he made a stand against the Canadian government’s introduction of a law that aimed to make it a crime not to address people by their preferred gender pronouns (regardless of chromosomes).

I'm pretty sure that's a gross misrepresentation of that law. From the little I know about it, I think it was more about adding "using the wrong pronoun" as a possible aggravating circumstance to consider when somebody is already being harassed:

https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/canadian-lawmakers-p...

> The bill adds prohibitions against discrimination on the basis of gender identity and gender expression to the Canadian Human Rights Act, amends the criminal code to extend protections against hate speech and allows judges to take into consideration when sentencing whether a crime was motivated by hatred of the victim’s gender identity or expression.

sgdesign··on 2017 JavaScript Rising Stars
Hey, sorry about that! It looks like we do have Gun in the BestOfJS db, so we could add it. Like you said the only problem is figuring out in which category…
sgdesign··on 2017 JavaScript Rising Stars
Are you sure it wasn't just all the images? There's quite a lot of them. Also you can click on each project to show more info, so it's somewhat interactive.
sgdesign··on 2017 JavaScript Rising Stars
We've had some questions on how libraries were selected. Basically, they were manually added and tagged on http://bestof.js.org, and we then reused the data to build the Rising Stars rankings.

So if you see a library missing, it could be because we didn't know about it and didn't add it to the database, or maybe tagged it in a way that excluded it from a specific category. Feedback welcome!

sgdesign··on Japan is embracing nursing-care robots
I've heard that too but I don't think it makes any kind of sense from a practical point of view, and I suspect it might just be a nice theory. These "nursing care robots" are very far from being able to do even 1/10th of what a normal human worker can.
sgdesign··on Japan is embracing nursing-care robots
A lot of Japan's embrace of robots is not so much due to what robots do, but due to what they represent: modernity, luxury, precision, etc.

For a nursing care facility, being able to tout a robot nurse is great for marketing. Whether or not the robot is useful is almost secondary.

sgdesign··on Learn CSS Grid through interactive screencasts
If you can only pick one CSS Grid seems more powerful. But they do mostly different things (with some overlap) so you really want to learn both if you can.
sgdesign··on The State of JavaScript 2017
I know this is just trolling, but it thought it was ironic to get this clichéd criticism about complex dynamic data visualizations, which for once are precisely the kind of thing that JS is required for…
sgdesign··on The State of JavaScript 2017
Creator here. What browser/OS are you using? You can always add a `font-weight: 500 !important` to the <body> tag.
sgdesign··on Ask HN: What are better alternatives to Meteor?
It's not an alternative to Meteor since it's built on top of it, but you could look at VulcanJS: http://vulcanjs.org
sgdesign··on Thoughts on Meteor for rapid prototyping of an MVP
You could check out Vulcan: http://vulcanjs.org
sgdesign··on Hacker News Clone Using GraphQL and React
We're trying with http://vulcanjs.org
sgdesign··on Ask HN: What audio resources can improve my technical skills during my commute?
It's probably not that relevant anymore but we did try creating a more educational podcast where we focused on a specific topic each episode, about the Meteor JS framework:

sgdesign··on Get started making music
Check out Auxy for iPhone for a really simple way to get started with sequencers.
sgdesign··on Get started making music
What's especially impressive is that the OP-1 has only four tracks, and only does destructive recording with no undo. Meaning that if you want more than four instruments, you have to overdub the same track, and any mistake will ruin the current loop.

In other words, you really need to know what you're doing and have a really good idea of what you want to play to be able to make a song as elaborate as this.

sgdesign··on Me and SVG
I thought this was sad as well, especially since there are many people who make a lot more than this with self-published technical books.

If I'm completely honest, I hadn't heard of the author before reading her post, even though I try to keep up with the web development scene. This leads me to think that maybe she would've benefited from putting her name out there more, something many of us are hesitant to do.

sgdesign··on RxDB – Local JavaScript-Database
It's not quite the same thing, but I've been using the Redux store in conjunction with Mingo (https://github.com/kofrasa/mingo/) to perform sorts and filtering.
sgdesign··on Ask HN: Is Meteor(JS framework) is dying slowly?
Meteor is not dying, it's just evolving towards more openness and modularity, which is what people have been asking for all along.

This does mean some pieces of Meteor (like its front-end framework Blaze, for example) might become obsolete, but overall it's a good thing.

sgdesign··on Ask HN: Excluding WordPress, what is your favorite for blogs or small stores?
If this is for a client that can't manage a static site themselves, then I would probably look into splitting out the content editing part. For example services like https://www.datocms.com/ let you publish to a separate static site generator.
sgdesign··on Kalzumeus Software Year in Review 2016
The fact that you're wondering why Tokyo is so wonderful compared to Ogaki makes me think you've never been to Ogaki… (or Tokyo, for that matter).
sgdesign··on JavaScript frameworks and topics to learn in 2017
This is a nice-sounding programming mantra but it doesn't make much sense in the real world, in my opinion. Learning the "philosophy" of Redux is a natural by-product of learning how to actually use Redux.

To me this is the equivalent of saying "learn molecular chemistry, don't follow recipes" to someone who's trying to learn how to cook. It may be true that the most experienced chefs have a deep understanding of chemistry, but it's much more practical to start from the surface and dig deeper, compared to overwhelming newcomers with "principles" and "philosophies" right off the bat.

sgdesign··on Peter Thiel To Join Trump Transition Team
So if Trump's problem is only with illegal immigrants, I'm sure he and his supporters would be more than happy to relax immigration policy and regularize the illegal immigrants that are already in the U.S., thus solving the issue?
sgdesign··on A curated list of open source applications built with Node.js
I was wondering that too. Either someone figured out how to game the HN algorithm, or the term "curated list" really does have some magic clickbait properties…
sgdesign··on Elementary OS
The open source movement is a programmer thing to begin with. "Source" does stand for "source code" after all, so it's no surprise that designers don't contribute as much as programmers.

Designers do their own part by putting out the design equivalent of free open source code, in other words free icons, fonts, templates, concepts, etc.

sgdesign··on Soylent halts sales of its powder as customers keep getting sick
Telling someone they're "missing out on living life" just because they don't do the same thing as you is really condescending.
sgdesign··on Shame on Y Combinator
It would definitely be wrong to fire or sever all ties with someone for supporting, say, George W. Bush. On the other hand, it would be appropriate to do so if said person supported Hitler.

So the question is where you put Donald Trump on that spectrum. Personally, I think he's much closer to an authoritarian populist than to a regular politician.

You may disagree with Trump's placement on that axis, but I find it very strange to see so many people in this thread arguing that punishing someone for their political position is always wrong, no matter how vile or dangerous said political position is.

sgdesign··on SubmitHub: how a solo founder built a $46k/mo SaaS business in 10 months
Something that I think is worth pointing out: that site doesn't have a recurring revenue model and also charges very low fees, two things that go against the common wisdom of "just get people to pay you every month, and add an enterprise plan in there for good measure".

The truth is that the classic three-tiered SaaS business model is just one of many possible business models, yet many developers-turned-entrepreneur adopt it without stopping to think whether it's a good fit or not for their product.

sgdesign··on The State of JavaScript – Survey results
Really sorry about that! I'll keep it in mind next time.
sgdesign··on The State of JavaScript – Survey results
"EMCAScript2015" is a mouthful, and I suspect a lot of people would assume it's referring to the "old" version of JavaScript just because it's not the current year.

It might be the more "technically" correct name, but from a branding/marketing/communication point of view, ES6 is vastly superior in my opinion.
