sgallant··on Trying out TinaCMS
Tina co-founder here. I agree that our data-layer detracts from the simplicity of a static site so I'll elaborate on why we made that decisions.

You're right, to render a static site you don't need a database. However, for a lot of CMS functionality, a database is required (or in our case a "Data Layer"). It's used for searching, sorting, and filtering content. In Smashing Magazine's case, they need to do these operations across 10's of thousands of Markdown files. This couldn't be done without our Data Layer and would result in rate limiting if they hit the GitHub API directly.

Also, since our Data Layer provides a GraphQL API, developers can do interesting things like pull their Markdown content into other applications and use server side rendering. We see it as the best of both worlds: you own your content in Git but you also get a headless CMS to query.

Semi-related: we're on the cusp of releasing some improvements that will make self-hosting Tina much better, so check back in a week or two if you're interested in that.

sgallant··on Billing Engines Don't Solve Pricing Problems
I don't see the issue here. They're solving a real problem for developers with their open-source solution and telling people about it.
sgallant··on Things you forgot (or never knew) because of React
This comment smells like gate keeping to me: "developers who work with frontend tech aren't REAL developers".

Personally, I know many developers who are doing great work with frontend technologies. Some with little experience, some with decades of experience, some self taught, and some with formal CS degrees.

Frontend is a great career path for those who enjoy it.

sgallant··on Show HN: I made CSS Pro, a re-imagined Devtools for web design
After seeing the demo, I was really stoked about this product and was ready to buy but then I was turned off from the recurring monthly price.

FWIW, if it were a 1-time price I would have paid probably $50 - $99 for that.

Here's a good interview with Adam Wathan from Tailwind about lifetime pricing:

Congrats on making it to the homepage of HN!

sgallant··on Show HN: Tinasaurus – a Docusaurus starter project with TinaCMS
Yes, you can just point TinaCMS to a directory of Markdown (or MDX, JSON, YML, etc).
sgallant··on Show HN: Tinasaurus – a Docusaurus starter project with TinaCMS
Yes,you can use it on existing sites too. Just run the following command to initialize Tina:

npx @tinacms/cli@latest init

sgallant··on Show HN: Tinasaurus – a Docusaurus starter project with TinaCMS
Hi HN, we (tina.io) are big fans Docusaurus so we created a starter project to show how you can best use TinaCMS to edit a Docusaurus site.

Here's a link to the announcement article https://tina.io/tinasaurus

And here's a 5-min overview of the project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bHBwM54UB8

Happy writing!

sgallant··on Remix web framework aquired by Shopify
Offering a great developer experience (DX) when building e-commerce sites is core to their strategy. DX was a key reason why they beat Squarespace in the early e-commerce days: developers preferred building Shopify sites over Squarespace sites.

It's in Shopify's best interest to maintain that developer love and Remix can help with that. Here are two hypothetical situations to highlight that point:

1. If someone else, say, Swell [1], had better DX than Shopify, we would see Shopify start to lose market share to Swell for the segment of the market where developers can influence the tooling decision (i.e. agencies).

2. If in two years from now, everyone is using Next.js to build e-commerce sites, that would put Vercel (the company behind Next.js) in a good position to promote/partner with other e-commerce providers or build their own e-commerce solution and compete with Shopify.

The developer market segment is important and DX is key there.

sgallant··on Ask HN: How much info should founders share with early stage employees?
+1 to this comment.

Before I founded my company, I worked for another startup that wasn’t very transparent. It was not a healthy/empowering environment.

Now, when dealing with things like partnerships, customers, and finance (runway, burn, revenue, fundraising, etc) I ask myself “what type of company would I want to work at?” and I always lean towards transparency.

Having said that, this needs to be done carefully. Instead of pumping everyone up about a potential partnership that could fall flat, you should try to be realistic and objective about it. “I’m really excited about a potential partnership with X. Even though this partnership will require we invest some resources doing Y, I see the possible benefits to the company as Z. From my perspective, this is a good opportunity for us. This isn’t finalized so I’ll keep you up to date on our progress. Let me know if you have any concerns or questions about this.”

sgallant··on HN is up again
I really love HN but I too feel like it's an addiction/slot machine.

My solution: a 3-hour focus mode browser extension.

1. Install the BlockSite chrome extension [1]. 2. In BlockSite settings, add HN, Twitter, and any other distracting sites to the Focus Mode list and set Focus Mode time to 3 hours. 3. Ensure you uninstall all social media apps from your phone 4. When I find myself opening a new tab and typing "n" to get a dopamine hit, I then turn on my 3-hour focus mode.

Plausible's website metrics are public and you can see the impact this article has on their traffic (due to front page of HN, I presume).

Traffic goes from approx 4K visitors/day to almost 20K visitors today (so far).

sgallant··on Ask HN: Why can't I learn anymore?
This is something that I wondered too.

Are you excited about the problem that your software and company are focused on improving?

Do you connect with the users whose lives are going to improve when they use your solutions?

Are you empowered to talk to your users and figure out how to solve their problems?

sgallant··on Ask HN: I burned out but I don't want to let my team down
First of all, I commend you for recognizing what you're going through and reaching out for help. The HN community often has very good feedback related to mental health and burnout so I'm looking forward to keeping up with this thread.

It sounds like you're taking other very good steps (exercise, eating well, social life).

That feeling of not wanting to get out of bed/watching Netflix can also be associated with depression. Most of us experience some form of depression throughout life (brief or chronic). Have you considered seeing a doctor about this?

"Should I just take a couple of weeks' vacation?" My sense is that two weeks would be bare minimum. Can you take 3 or 4 weeks off? And as others have recommended here, resist the urge to do side-projects and spend as little time online as possible.

Regarding your team, in my experience people respond really well to honesty about what's going on. "Hi team, my energy and motivation are not where they usually are and I'm experience what I think might be burnout or a small bought of depression. I've decided to take X weeks off of work so I can recharge. This might mean that you need to step up and do XYZ while I'm away but I know you're more than capable of it. I look forward to seeing what you've all accomplished when I'm back and feeling better." This helps others understand that it's OK to not always feel 100% and that they too should prioritize their health (mental & physical). You're giving your team permission to be a healthy version of themselves in a world where that often isn't a priority.

This is a journey. You got this.

sgallant··on Inside the longest Atlassian outage
Thinking about all the folks with sites powered by Confluence and this quote I heard from a customer today:

“We build to static HTML, deploy to S3 and Cloudfront, and it’s f*ing bomb proof”

sgallant··on Write plain text files
I'm a big believer in this, but I use https://bear.app/. It supports the Markdown format and can export to .md files, but it uses SQLite under the hood, I believe.

What's amazing about this is that your thought archive is now searchable (which is fast in bear).

Forestry.io | remote | full time

* Junior web developer to own technical support and product metrics. Fresh out of boot camp or college? No problem.

At Forestry.io, we believe the web is one of humanity’s greatest achievements and our mission is to help people build a better web. We are a group of passionate self-starters who thrive on building cutting edge technology that has real impact for users. We are building a visual editing experience for content. Tina CMS is a tool kit focused on the JAMstack and Tina Cloud is a next-generation content management system with open-core content management solutions with a GraphQL API backed by Git.

sgallant··on WordPress themes, plugins backdoored in supply chain attack
This is 100% possible without a server. Your repo can be your database if you run it statically with something like Hugo (a single binary with no dependencies). Store your content in your own repo in Markdown files (or something similar, like MDX) and host it on Netlify, Vercel, AWS, etc.

If your site has 10K posts and you don’t want to deal with long build times, use Next.js with ISR (make some high traffic pages static, others dynamic (server side rendered)).

As the founder of Forestry.io and Tina.io, I’m biased about a content editing UI, but there are many options if you want a GUI on top of your content files.

You got this.
