serpix··on The Distribution of Users’ Computer Skills: Worse Than You Think (2016)
This brings back times when doing parental tech support over the phone.

"can you read what is on the screen right now"

"There is nothing on the screen!"

"there is a box on the center of your screen with words, please read them"

"OH that box.."

serpix··on The effect of meditation on brain structure (2012)
chop your hand off. You will still remain. Remember your worst fever, you remained though your thoughts were muddled. Got separated from your partner? You still remained.

This is a form of self enquiry to separate yourself from what you are not, to break the spell of identification. Some people are identified with not only their bodies but with their children but to their car, house, job, even the products of their work. These are all not you.

After seeing what you are not, you start seeing what you really are. For that you will need this preparation work.

serpix··on The effect of meditation on brain structure (2012)
feeling checked out is a form of disassociation and could be a sign of burnout or trauma response. Meditation will give you the tools to recognize this, stay with it ans and embrace it fully.

Even through text alone I sense there is fear of seeing what exactly happens when the thoughts quiet down. You'll be safe, you'll bring into surface what is causing this feeling. You'll be free of it.

serpix··on When homework is busywork (2009)
It made me sick to my stomach to be told this is the formula and here is how you must calculate it, but we won't tell you why it works even if you ask.

It is army culture. Here is your shovel, now dig.

serpix··on Our Brains Are Not Multi-Threaded
What you don't think happens on its own and what you think also happens on its own. The illusion is that thinking is you, identification with thinking. Once that is seen as an illusion you can observe yourself talking, thinking and verify all this happens on its own.
serpix··on Ethiopia beats its goal and plants over 350M trees in 12 hours
I'm appalled by this attitude. Monoculture plantations are the very reason we are losing biodiversity at a rate that is going to collapse the food chain we depend upon. Animals and plants do not know boundaries, they try their damned hardest to live and repair the network of organisms we are tearing apart.

In the time it takes a forest to grow it will be home to many species which we utterly fuck up when harvesting the forest, once again putting one more nail in the coffin of our own food supply.

The forest tending of Scandinavia is a good example. The "plantations" are not entirely monoculture and can never be in fact. Healthy forests are anything but only trees, there are so many other species required for a healthy forest.

Please read this for more information about the devastation we cause for some lumber: https://earthroots.org/index.php/clearcutting-item

serpix··on Ethiopia beats its goal and plants over 350M trees in 12 hours
a "proper" clear cut leaves nothing. They take everything and kill all they can. When they are done they turn the land over leaving a thoroughly savage landscape behind. It is soul crushing to see such brutality. I truly hope we will make such crime against life a punishable offence comparable to mass murder.

Google the images or go look at some sites of such carnage.

serpix··on I just don’t want to be a software developer anymore (2017)
then why the hell do we use it?! The inmates are running the asylum!
serpix··on Why I like Clojure
Thank you for the jupyter notebook tip though. As I do have a biggish Scala app to maintain any help with it is good. :) Thanks again.
serpix··on SQL Window Functions
The existence of LAG and LEAD have solved some seriously iffy requirements twice in the past year now. One time for measuring / determining from two consecutive GPS points some details about speed, route and distance (omitting some details here), LAG allowed to see and compare the previous points recorded and is IMO absolutely vital for PostGIS.

second time for calculating changes between two rows and combining that with some business rules, the existence of LAG was absolutely crucial for keeping it all in the database.

RANK / PARTITION BY is something that when you need it you really really need it. Like if you join a bunch of rows to a single column but would like to just have the first or last of those rows for results and disregard all the other rows? RANK and order by

serpix··on Why I like Clojure
Clojure: live repl into running code

Scala:

Clojure: Explore the problem you are facing with quick prototyping in the repl and see the blind spots, the unknowns, the shape of data received from flaky integrations. Mold and shape your functions as the problem becomes clearer.

Scala: Best it can do is write unit tests and the debugger to look at what exactly is happening, devise a bunch of classes to handle them, rinse repeat and of course wait hours for recompiles. Refactor when new unknowns surface and curse at the fucking compiler not knowing what type it should be inferring.

Clojure programmers are done before Scala has a test environment up.

serpix··on Lisp as a Vehicle for Rapid Prototyping (1997)
re-natal does this and it works as advertised. Zero reloading, full repl connection to running program. There is no competition, and won't be.
serpix··on Ask HN: Looking back, what have you wasted lots of time on?
with awareness, time cannot be wasted. Everything happened just the way it needed to. Everything happening now happens just the way it should.
serpix··on Tesla Model 3 Cost of Ownership Slightly Cheaper Than a Camry
Actual price of electricity is negligible, around 4-6 cent/kWh. There is really very little wiggle room here. The rest is tax and electricity transfer.

You can choose to buy your electricity from anyone but you have to pay the local monopoly for the transfer. Electric transfer/infrastructure has been sold abroad by our very forward thinking smart politicians and thus that money is never seen again.

Both cost double that of electricity or more. So the total is around 13-17c/kWh. Smart metering saves only a few cents per kWh. These two rates have been going up really fast and will lead to a solar/wind revolution in short order.

serpix··on Tesla Model 3 Cost of Ownership Slightly Cheaper Than a Camry
Speaking as a fellow Finn, yes the cost of gas/diesel for those who drive a lot (= everyone living outside of bicycle/running range from work) is insane. I don't understand why the negative attitude towards electric in Finland when it is astoundingly expensive to drive with ICEs. We have a fully working inexpensive charging network spanning all inter-city roads and city centers. If you do a little bit of homework FREE charging can be found.

Currently drive a plugin which has allowed me to drive with electric only to and from work and will absolutely never buy a ICE again, it is just too expensive to drive them here.

serpix··on Why Clojure?
For frontend Reagent (React but with just Clojure functions and data structures. No classes, no jsx, just one language and immutable data.), and re-frame which does state management and event dispatching better than the competition. Redux is a poor poor imitation.
serpix··on Kegan's Theory of the Evolution of Consciousness

serpix··on Jaguar and Audi SUVs Fail to Dent Tesla’s Electric-Car Dominance
Just saw one in the back country in Finland. Really deep in the sticks and on a small road. Was a great moment seeing it there. The electric revolution is coming along and unstoppably. Now would be a great time to get a career going in electrification. Electric installation / Solar power installation you name it, the demand will skyrocket.

none, shadow cljs does everything and seems so far to be easier to get running with full emacs repl-y goodness
serpix··on GE's smart light bulb reset process is a masterpiece of modern techno-insanity
The big con is working 40 hours a week to afford to rent/own/buy a place to live so you can continue working said 40 hours a week.

Cut it to 15, move to cheaper residence and cut out gadgets, buying useless shit and owning lots of things. This frees up huge chunks of time and creativity and freedom. The freedom you thought you were working towards toiling 40 hours of your life per week.

serpix··on GE's smart light bulb reset process is a masterpiece of modern techno-insanity
just think about it. Factories produce with near zero human muscle costs endless supplies of goods that take care of all our vital needs. With a tiny little effort we could almost entirely automate food production. The way it is currently set up is because of the invention of money and ownership we are in a false sense of lacking something. We lack nothing anymore. In reality there is no lack, hasn't been since the invention of factories and farm machines.

Alan Watts predicted our overabundance of goods in the sixties and the problems we will face (and are facing).

https://bigthink.com/technology-innovation/alan-watts-basic-...

The bottom line is:

who should pay for the basic income?

machines. they do it already.
