serpix··on 30-year U.S. bond yields less than S&P dividend rate
yet. Nobody knows where the bottom is. The virus is only at the beginning of its conquest of the Western world.
serpix··on Japan's PM to ask all schools to temporarily close
virus particles really are in the air infecting people.
serpix··on Why Germans won’t heat their homes even with free electricity?
Modern air pumps work with good efficiency even down to around -15c which is a rare temperature for post global warming world.
serpix··on Global warming has begun to make Norway warmer and wetter
Sure as hell beats the alternative of driving to work everyday and eating meat as usual.
serpix··on UBC study links living near highways to risk of neurological disorders
Most of that list gets crossed out just by dropping out of the rat race and living in an RV in the woods.
serpix··on Man diagnosed with coronavirus near Seattle is being treated largely by a robot
just got a free flu shot last week in Finland when visiting a nurse.
serpix··on Analysis of compensation, level, and experience details of 19k tech workers
These numbers are close to double that of Europe. Only self employed consultants get near the bottom edge of those incomes.
serpix··on Goodbye, Clean Code
A green test does not equal bug free code. There may be a misimplementation / misunderstanding of the spec or your code passes beautifully under right conditions, with just this data setup.
serpix··on Is it fair game for adults to snipe at child activists like Greta Thunberg?
As soon as we mix up biological age with intelligence and wisdom we end up seeing problems where there is none. There are mature people and immature people and everything in between. Maturity does not correlate with biological age.
serpix··on Using Clojure for Web Apps
Even worse is having been through the enlightenment and then witnessing people talk about Javascript or Scala like it is still 1990. You just want to yell to them "You're all living in a cave!"
serpix··on Ask HN: With ADHD, how did you become an effective software developer?
If only there weren't interruptions all the time this would work. No problem getting into flow state but keep getting interrupted out of it.
serpix··on Fractured Forests Are Endangering Wildlife, Scientists Find
we are decades past that point. The biodiversity in national parks that have existed for longer are completely different to what an average person considers wilderness.
serpix··on Generating a Java program with 90% less code
As a polyglot dev with experience in JS, Python, Scala, Clojure, Java to name a few, Clojure is hands down in another league compared to all the rest. My experience is with Clojure is my productivity is a magnitude higher next to others. The REPL and instant feedback alone propel develoment velocity and developer satisfaction so far out there there is just no contest.
serpix··on Tesla Model 3 Invaded My Neighborhood – But It’s Bigger Than That (GM Take Note)
There is simply no contest on acceleration, ease of use and cost of ownership. In Europe gas prices alone should kick over the transition to EVs. Currently only basic emotions and resistance to change are holding back a flood.

Human behaviour (in numbers) being like that of herd animals it only takes a few neighbors to trigger the avalanche.

serpix··on Light pollution is key 'bringer of insect apocalypse'
Yes. Lack of light is perfectly safe for humans although we tend to get a little depressed with pro longed periods of darkness.
serpix··on Tesla Cybertruck
Some Dodge Rams and Ford pickups in Finland. They barely fit in parking lots and are ridiculously huge and polluting.
serpix··on Burnout – early detection and avoidance (before it's too late)
my number one meter is sleep quality. Two burnouts after this is the most reliable metric. Two nights of poor sleep is serious, very serious. I've learned to take action to prevent prolonged stress, even changing gigs with my dream stack but sky high stress.

I'd rather be unemployed living in a tent than going through burnout recovery ever again.

serpix··on A 3D Metal Printer Is Churning Out Rockets
US military uses quite a ridiculously larger amount yearly. Nasa budget for going to the moon is insignificant compared to what is spent on war.
serpix··on How Figma's Multiplayer Technology Works
Figma is a marvel of software engineering. Have you used the competition? Have you used Figma?
serpix··on Tesla’s new Solar Roof costs less than a new roof plus solar panels
I paid 30000 euros for roofing for a house a little bigger than that. I would have danced naked on the streets for 20k.
serpix··on Working asynchronously
4 managers to one dev is a ratio that warrants a very quick change of jobs.
serpix··on Fashion industry emits more carbon than flights and maritime shipping combined
100% merino wool hiking/running socks are perfect for hot and humid. I've ran +20 hour ultramarathons in hot conditions with them. They are much better than cotton. Plastic socks are good for 1 hour gym sessions.
serpix··on Superior IQs associated with mental and physical disorders, research suggests
what if .. the story of there being a god separate from you is just a story. The nondual or advaita insight is that you are divine already, just pretending not to be. It goes deeper than that and should not be made another story but experienced yourself first. This was my own path to unshakeable faith, by own experience with the help of teachings and meditation as the beginning.
serpix··on Clojure 1.11 planning
functions. Macros are a super weapon and their use is reserved for very special cases. One reason is macros can't be composed as functions and also readability goes out the windows.
serpix··on macOS Catalina
VueScan to the rescue, it supports scanners from the 90s and is also a very good scanning app to boot.
serpix··on Australian government to crack down on climate protestors
it will get worse. Governments choose to fight the people instead of changing their agenda of driving us towards extinction. Expect Extinction Rebellion to grow fiercely and protests to expand all over the planet.
serpix··on Working all night is not 'a badge of pride'
Spotting a junior dev working over their capacity is the responsibility of seniors to tell them to take it easy. Remember how they (and yourself) worked you to the bone and how it would have helped if someone would have stepped in early.

You can't save them all but you can atleast give the message that their situation is seen and recognized.

serpix··on We are clueless about how long things should take
Then when the deadline does whoosh by - nothing changes and the sun rises just as always. It turns out very many deadlines are not in fact hard, they were just thrown on the table in some meeting and everybody starts to act like it is the end of the world if that date is passed.
serpix··on We are clueless about how long things should take
Did it result in burnouts? I was part of such a mess and two out of four team members got burnout, myself one of them. It did teach me to get the fuck out early the next time I feel the same emotions of inadequacy and pressure on me. And in the very next project after a very sudden ramp up of backlog and increased pressure I looked in the mirror and got out, cleanly and without burnout or bad feelings.

I would say you are living earth itself.
