serpix··on A stationary jet stream is fueling intense heat worldwide
The nordics still have winters that are filled with wet cold darkness and short summers that are wet and cold or just cold. Temperatures above 30c are mostly on a tuesday once a year on a sunny hillside.
serpix··on Framework Laptop 16 Deep Dive – 180W Power Adapter
An M2 Pro draws around 20W with IntelliJ development, usually it hovers at around 12W. Gaming with GeForce Now keeps it at 12W as well. I am baffled by the need for over ten fold power adapters.
serpix··on Logistics challenges of saving Air India’s diverted 777 in Russia
US has friends, so it wouldn't happen.
serpix··on No_color
To increase confusion the variable name should contain the verb as well: NO_COLOR_DISABLED=enabled
serpix··on The world’s oldest ultramarathon runner is racing against death
Running 7 hours straight vs sitting on a chair 7 hours. I would choose running 7 hours as it is easier. This is how much running changes you.
serpix··on De-dollarization is happening at a ‘stunning’ pace
This forum for conversation would not exist and talking like this would get both of us jailed or worse.
serpix··on Ask HN: Is PostgreSQL better than MySQL?
DDL ends a transaction in MySQL. In my opinion, this is a showstopper and deal breaker. Good luck failing a migration in production.
serpix··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
You hit the nail on the head with how much we saw and interacted with our parents. It was not much.
serpix··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
Our parents were emotionally absent. Now we swing the opposite way and interfere too much in fear or being the wrong type of parent. Our fear of traumatising our children causes trauma due to too much constraining.
serpix··on What broke Sweden? Real estate bust exposes big divide
With mortgages paying down only the interest doesn't this mean people can become chained to the property? Unable to sell due to the value drop and having to own money to the bank after selling?
serpix··on Is hand coding becoming obsolete?
I wonder how you are currently predicting a random api change, login flow change, business reorganisation change, inheriting and integrating a new microservice to the ecosystem of n existing other applications.
serpix··on Superhuman: What can AI do in 30 minutes?
Experience in software projects plus AI gives a clever consultant a force multiplier that is unheard of. A person who knows how things are made but lacks time can leverage AI to boost their productivity by several multiples. What a time to be alive. It feels like I have been given a new career overnight.
serpix··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
The value of therapy outweighs the suspicion of some corporation using that data in my opinion. The benefits are large and extend from one individual to whole family chains, even communities.
serpix··on Hyundai promises to keep buttons in cars
Well they just got a (repeat) customer for life.
serpix··on Hyundai promises to keep buttons in cars
I had the exact same feel when test driving it. It has problems cornering and driving in winter conditions.
serpix··on Hyundai promises to keep buttons in cars
in every other car on the planet it is the right stalk down. They had to go and reinvent this.
serpix··on Testing GPT 4's code-writing capabilities with some real world problems
Last paragraph is spot on. Would also add a vast amount is spent looking at the code and the system and just understanding what goes where.
serpix··on Show HN: GPT Repo Loader – load entire code repos into GPT prompts
co-pilot excels in writing tests. It removes so much of the tedium and boilerplate. It seems to understand fixtures once you define one and understands subsequent changes to the boilerplate such as changing usernames, ids, appending items to lists. It is such a massive boost in productivity that those using it are way ahead of those who resist.
serpix··on 40% of the code GitHub Copilot users check-in is AI generated and unmodified
Sometimes it is just the syntax of your language. We can't all be writing lisp where the syntax is just another abstraction.
serpix··on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Spread Through Employee Mobility (2022)
my personal experience as a consultant has been outright fear of touching the production servers. Fear as in actual fear response such as nervousness, agitation, facial expressions.

Other examples would be fear of altering any deeper parts of the system due to fear of punishment or war room style crisis.

serpix··on World’s largest four-day work week trial finds few are going back
Look at the marginal tax rate in Finland and it makes you think the rationality of working at all:

https://www.veronmaksajat.fi/luvut/Laskelmat/Palkansaajan-ve... The lower tax bracket of 38kEur give a margin tax of a whopping 49,5% and it gets progressively worse after that.

serpix··on Throughout the rich world, the young are falling out of love with cars
It is ridiculously expensive but the freedom is unparalleled. It would takes two hours to go across town. It takes 30 minutes by car. This is in Helsinki. Public transport works only to and from city center, sideways travel is royally painful.
serpix··on Throughout the rich world, the young are falling out of love with cars
When I used the metro for commuting I got sick all the time. This is of course anecdotal but it really felt that way at the time.
serpix··on Show HN: Spaghettify – A VSCode Extension to make your code worse with AI
Add irrelevant comments has real world use for some students who are required to comment all of their code when submitting their work.
serpix··on Meta to ask many managers to become individual contributors or leave
my advice is to keep doors open. You will age and your needs and expectations may change. You can always start a transition to take on more managerial duties while doing individual contribution.
serpix··on How to talk to GPT-3 through Siri
My problem with Siri is that it doesn't understand speech. I am non native speaker but coming from Android I had no problems with Google in understanding what I am saying. It just does not understand or completely alters the phrase.
serpix··on I Added GitHub Copilot to My Toolbelt
Do you also require code be written on notepad.exe on a monochrome display or am I allowed to use autocompleting IDEs? Where do you draw the line on computer assisted text editing?
serpix··on I Added GitHub Copilot to My Toolbelt
Chiming in that I also got the vibes that this article has really low signal and feels like it has been generated.
serpix··on Kodezi - Autocorrect for Programmers
for me the Copilot killer feature is its ability to learn from context. If I write a function and then use that function later copilot learns how I use the function and suggests the correct parameters and even knows to change some of the parameters depending on the context. In this way it is jaw dropping and a serious multiplier to productivity.
serpix··on Objection to ORM Hatred (2019)
I've been dabbling with Prisma after almost a decade of staying away from ORMs such as EJB3 / Hibernate / iBatis.

With Prisma I like the ability to generate migrations and the DB schema from a single schema definition file. I also like the autogenerated simple crud use cases.

It did not take long to have to go raw. A simple case of selecting the top most occurring unique columns from a table with a join to limit by user id is brutally trivial oneliner in SQL that just rolls off the keyboard. I took a good try to do the same with Prisma and I believe it can be done, but the complexity of what the DSL will look like is laughable.

So I still have the same opinion I've had for these past years, ORMs are okay for simple crud stuff but the moment you need something slightly beyond that bailing for the raw sql is the best thing that you can possibly do for the maintenance team that comes after you have changed projects.
