seized··on EPFL cancels Stallman's lecture citing “the situation regarding” his persona
> To me, that sounds like a person simply updating their views in response to new evidence-new to them even if much older to many others. Labelling it as “back-pedalling” seems to me to be needlessly uncharitable to him

> It might be hard to understand why it took him so long to realise this-but I think you have to understand he occupies a very different position in society from most people, with the result he is often ignorant of mainstream trends, or feels no motivation to care about them.

That's an absurd take on this. He's not updating his stance on over easy eggs, or beer preference (not as in free, but IPA vs porter), this is about children. And "different place in society" doesn't excuse it either, this isn't knowing the current memes or bands. This is simple fundamental logic, common sense, etc.

Before I had kids, it was still completely and utterly obvious that sex with kids is wrong. Yes, there's a grey area around age of consent + one year older or whatever, but that is entirely not applicable to his comments, Epstein, etc. Trying to justify Epstein is just wrong.

Time to get a Brother.
seized··on Bcachefs – A New COW Filesystem
As is EMC Isilon.
seized··on Bcachefs – A New COW Filesystem
I've had ZFS pools survive (at different times over the span of years):

- A RAIDz1 (RAID5) pool with a second disk start failing while rebuilding from an earlier disk failure (data was fine)

- A water to air CPU cooler leaking, CPU overheated and the water shorted and killed the HBA running a pool (data was fine)

- An SFF-8088 cable half plugged in for months, pool would sometimes hiccup, throw off errors, take a while to list files, but worked fine after plugging it in properly (data was fine after)

Then the usual disk failures which are a non-event with ZFS.

seized··on Bcachefs – A New COW Filesystem
ZIL is just a fast place to write the data for sync operations. If everything is working then the ZIL is never read from, ZFS uses RAM as that foreground bit.

Async writes on a default configuration don't hit the ZIL, only RAM for a few seconds then disk. Sync writes are RAM to ZIL, confirm write, then RAM to pool.

seized··on Framework Laptop Cupholder Expansion Card
Get a Joeveo cup, then no need for heaters. It's the world's best travel mug. Its insulation cools the drink to drinking temperature then keeps it there for hours, perfect cup of coffee. Had mine for years, from the original Kickstarter.

https://joeveo.com/

It's the Framework of coffee mugs.

seized··on faulTPM: Exposing AMD fTPMs' Deepest Secrets
Amen to this. I understand some of the complaints with it getting into name resolution and other things, but having had to decipher vendors init scripts it's a huge improvement for managing services.

When you add in things like Podman and it's use of systemd it's overall not a bad thing at all.

seized··on Meta says about 10% of its global ad revenue at risk from EU data flows order
Well anyway... How about that local sports team?
seized··on What it's like to go blind (2015)
Rigid gas permeable lenses can loses their coatings, and allergies/sensitivities to the preservatives in most cleaning solutions can develop over time. Both caused me problems, luckily a year of wearing glasses allowed me to recover. Now I only use hydrogen peroxide based cleaning solutions without extra ingredients. Much better, except for global supply chain problems right now....
seized··on Flatcar Container Linux
Fedora IoT is an easy step to this as well. It's really "Silverblue server", rpm-ostree based but without making the jump to ignition files right away.
seized··on Lawyers cough up $200k after health data stolen in Microsoft Exchange pillaging
And HIPAA spells out fines of up to a very high amount for breaches. This firm didn't even get the minimum fine per person.
seized··on Lawyers cough up $200k after health data stolen in Microsoft Exchange pillaging
$200k is an amazingly cheap fine for a HIPAA and PII breach of 114,979 peoples information. Each of those people could get like 1.5 bags of M&Ms.

Other companies may be taking note, but more of the sheer affordability of that.

Pixels are IME the Android equal to iPhones. Much cleaner and nicer experience than Samsung.
seized··on Sōzu – HTTP reverse proxy in Rust for immutable infrastructures
Or HAProxy.
seized··on Craziest thing I ever used SQLite for: partial file deduplication (2022)
No, only for deduplication, which is optional and doesn't make sense for most workloads. And usage depends on record (like block) size and other factors. Usually 1GB per TB of deduplicated storage is the max. ZFS works on datasets for configs like this, so you can dedup a small "filesystem" of data but not all 40TB on a pool.

It will use lots of RAM for ARC (adaptive read cache) but that can be limited.

ZFS RAM usage is greatly overblown in my opinion and experience.

seized··on Sweet Dreams Cereal
16 grams of sugar per serving?!? Just the thing for bed time.
seized··on Design of GNU Parallel (2015)
Parallel is a fun tool. I use it as a sort of simple slurm to distribute work over many VMs to process tens to hundreds of TBs of data. Sometimes across 2400+ cores.
seized··on Best printer 2023: just buy this Brother laser printer everyone has, it’s fine
Yes, just because you don't doesn't mean others don't.

Non digital submission forms, return labels, colouring pages for kids, tickets for events instead of installing apps, pages from car maintenance manuals instead of getting my phone dirty, so many more colour pages....

seized··on NordVPN library and client code open-sourced
Mullvad is excellent. No email required, all sorts of payment options including cash in an envelope. Can even get gift cards now.
seized··on Oxy is Cloudflare's Rust-based next generation proxy framework
Everyone needs oxygen and too much kills. Shoule we rename that element?

Flowing water kills people too, so what are your thoughts on network flows as a term?

seized··on The Quest for Netflix on Asahi Linux
Yes, that's one way to do it. It's the way that hasn't worked for years.

The other way is fire up a VPN (I suggest Mullvad), setup port fowarding in Mullvad once time, start QBittorent, search in QBittorent, done.

Yeah, not "easy"... But there are guides.

seized··on Age: Modern file encryption format with multiple pluggable recipients
Exactly. Gpg is famously straight forward to use (/s).
seized··on Age: Modern file encryption format with multiple pluggable recipients
Such a profoundly helpful contribution.... How about detail on why it's not better than gpg?
seized··on Security audit of account and payment services
I've been using Mullvad for several years now, ever since PIA took a downward turn with that acquisition. Mullvad has been fantastic.
seized··on Haiku package management
Also Fedora Kinoite, the KDE flavor of Silverblue.
seized··on Podman 4.4
Podman 4.0 brought a new network stack for rootless called Netavark. Works nicely for me.
seized··on Self hosting in 2023
Super easy with the right DNS provider and something like go-acme/Lego. Add a crom job and done. Yeah, not zero effort but compared to early Let's Encrypt with HTTP-01 and such it's quote easy.

seized··on An overview of single-purpose Linux distributions
There is also Fedora IoT which contrary to the name is kinda like Silverblue server or really an easy CoreOS. Works very well for containers.
seized··on Podman vs. Docker: Comparing the two containerization tools
I'm using a firewalld rich rule to forward host 443 to 8443, then the proxy container has 8443:8443 mapped. Works perfectly. All on Fedora but other firewalls should be able to do the same.
seized··on The Samsung Galaxy S23’s bloated Android build somehow uses 60GB of storage
And Facebook and that weird Flipboard news app and so many others. Most of which can't (or couldn't be) removed easily.

Having used Samsungs before, switching to Pixels makes things so.... Clean.
