seized··on Engine Sound Simulator
That's an insane take given DeSantis.
seized··on Microsoft removes documentation for switching to a local account in Windows 11
Fedora is what you want in my experience. The atomic versions like Kinoite may be a change in that you install via Flatpak or Toolbox/Distrobox, but once you try those it's a really neat change. And Fedora Workstation is still there as the normal install.
seized··on Telegram Stars: Pay for Digital Goods and More
Try Pushover for sending notifications for that. Super easy API, one time $5, and excellent features for message priority/retry/etc to allow for some messages to notake a sound and others to wake the dead up.
seized··on AdFlush
> We tested AdFlush on a dataset of 10,000 real-world websites, achieving an F1 score of 0.98, thereby outperforming AdGraph (F1 score: 0.93), WebGraph (F1 score: 0.90), and WTAgraph (F1 score: 0.84).

... Has anyone even heard of these ad blockers before?

seized··on I Miss BSD/Linux
ChromeOS can do quite a bit. Crostini is a built in take on Distrobox/Toolbox that gives you a Debian container to install anything. Newer versions can run multiple containers and do GUI pass through. ChromeOS can also run Android apps (although some apps don't do this well). And you get a hyper efficient immutable base OS. Five years ago I could get 10+ hours on battery without trying, on airplane WiFi for example.

Yes it's not perfect. But it is a lot more than it was when it was released. I only replaced it with Fedora Kinoite when the outdated Chrome browser version started getting in my way.

seized··on Sleep apnea: Mouthguards less invasive, just as effective as CPAP
I used a self fit one for a camping trip. Following the directions gave me a sore jaw and painful teeth. Not fun. I find my CPAP with a Nuance Pro mask (the opposite of what's shown in the article) to be much less intrusive.
seized··on Sleep apnea: Mouthguards less invasive, just as effective as CPAP
I'm sure the custom fitted MADs work well, but the price on those is on par with a CPAP. The cheaper self fit (moulded after being warmed up in boiling water) are absolutely not a replacement for CPAPs.
seized··on Microsoft starts testing ads in the Windows 11 Start menu
Good luck on their testing.

I just swapped to a MacBook for $job and my last Windows 10 VM will be gone as soon as I finish migrating from Lightroom to DigiKam, maybe in a week or two. Everything else has been moved to Fedora Kinoite, including the kids gaming computer and the wife's workstation.

seized··on Temperature control mugs tested
None of these are as good as the Joeveo Temperfect in my opinion.

https://joeveo.com/pages/the-temperfect-mug

I've used one daily since 2015. It's excellent. Gets a coffee to the right drinking temp in moments then keeps it there. No charging pads, controls, etc. Just works. Best thing I've ever backed on Kickstarter.

seized··on Death by Neti Pot
The hottest tape water you have and then vinegar is what I was told (and use). I use cleaning vinegar specifically.
seized··on Dotenv-vault: a CLI to sync .env files across machines, envs, and team members
What tool are you referring to with "OP"?
seized··on Serverless Horrors
Glacier IS a cheap way to backup data, in fact the cheapest of you ignore the scam "$200 for life" type things. It's about $1 per TB per month.

It's not cheap to restore though, at about $90 minimum per TB.

So it's best as part of a 3-2-1 system, not for frequent restores.

seized··on SeaweedFS fast distributed storage system for blobs, objects, files and datalake
Take a look at GarageS3, it's a niceoption for "just an S3 server" for self hosting.

https://garagehq.deuxfleurs.fr/

I use it for self hosting.

seized··on SeaweedFS fast distributed storage system for blobs, objects, files and datalake
GarageS3 is a nice middle ground, it is not file on disk per object but it's simpler than SeaweedFS as well.

seized··on FDA says 561 deaths tied to recalled Philips sleep apnea machines
You can use Philips masks with ResMed machines. I've used Philips Respironics Nuance Pro masks with my AirSense 10 since day one.
seized··on Everyone hates the electronic medical record
The specific example isn't a developer decision. It's a combination of vendor risk management teams, hospital InfoSec/security/compliance, legal teams, laws, and location of computers. Nevermind that setting is just as often a workstation GPO to lock the screen and not even the choice of the software.

(Work for a PACS vendor, subject to the same stuff).

seized··on Show HN: I made an app people call "Airdrop for Android"
SyncThing is a much better solution for that too.

For SyncThing-Fork has better options for controlling syncing based on network, battery level, etc.

D2 Lang is a nice one:

Only by memes of cats with buttered toast attached to their backs.
seized··on How Australia’s ‘Bluey’ conquered children’s entertainment
As a parent it's just a genuinely nice show to watch. There is so much complete crap out there now that Bluey is a breath of fresh air.

A few others are good fun as well like Grizzy and The Lemmings. But Bluey reigns supreme.

Although I wish the phone game didn't have in app purchases. At least the Bluey video game on Steam is good and without in app purchases or micro transaction nonsense.

seized··on OpenIndiana Illumos Distro
It's a great OS. I've been running it for 10+ years as my NAS OS and it's been rock solid. Paired with Napp-It as a ZFS management UI.
seized··on Fail2ban Sucks (2020)
Fail2ban can parse other logs and taken other actions. I have it on my NVR VM, reading the logs from the old Unifi NVR software. Three failed attempts and Fail2ban runs a script that does an API call to my OpnSense firewall to ban that IP from every port. Forever. Haproxy also monitors the HTTP response codes and drops the TCP connection, allowing the block to happen once the bad IP tries to reconnect.

So it's not just for password based SSH.

seized··on Show HN: Weeks of Your Life
One suggestion.... Make it faster to skip back and set the start date, or allow manual entry. I'm not even that old but it's a lot of months to click backwards on Android.
seized··on Ask HN: How to store your data for 200 years?
I would say AWS Glacier Deep Archive. It works out to $1/TB/month, except for retrieve costs. Pick a region away from fault lines and coasts maybe though.

Jeff Barr agrees too: https://www.lastweekinaws.com/blog/s3-as-an-eternal-service/

seized··on What This Country Needs is an 18¢ Piece (2002) [pdf]
Canada still has plenty of those machines, they just have copper or brass blanks in them.
seized··on Intel launches Core Ultra processors
I have two of their Sweet Potato AML-S905X-CC-V2 boards running Fedora IoT for some containers under Podman. Very fun devices to work with so far.
seized··on Google Promises Unlimited Storage; Cancels; Tells Journalist Life's Work Deleted
The 480TB one is retired, replaced with a 300TB all flash one.

But more importantly these devices are only for uploading to GCP, not exporting data from.

seized··on Housing costs are so high that divorced couples are still living together
If your parents live in the city then it often makes sense to pay the high cost of living in exchange for the family support, free child care, etc.
seized··on What is the closest to Google Keep but self hosted?
SyncThing works very well for Obsidian and is completely self hostable.

Although SyncThing on iOS isn't as nice as on Android.

seized··on B.C. looks to standardize multiplex designs as latest fix to housing crisis
