scottshea··on Jury finds protester not guilty in chalk-vandalism case
It should have been one of those news stories that are saved for the 'look at the absurdity' humor sections of the news. It does seem to illustrate the political fighting that has gripped the nation though. The Mayor and DA hold opposite views and drug this into the open.

My tendency is to agree with the mayor; massive waste of money. On the other hand it does serve as a small legal precedent now so I guess there is some absolute value. Maybe.

scottshea··on Ecuador says letter of safe conduct for Snowden is unauthorized and invalid
Next you'll tell me that DaVinci did not hide clues about Christianity in his work or something...
scottshea··on Could Glenn Greenwald go to jail? The law is alarmingly murky
And in a 5-4 decision the US Supreme court rules that he can be prosecuted (just looking into my cystal ball)
scottshea··on We've got thousands of pages of contracts with Booz Allen: Help us analyze
Now this is investigative journalism!
scottshea··on McDonald's HTML5 promotion site
Whatever you do, do not submit McLibel as a favorite moment. They have no sense of humor about it.
scottshea··on History: Two NSA cryptographers defect (1960)
The reason I post is that the NSA, DOD and HUAC started a smear campaign. The duo defected because of their frustration at NSA activities not being reported to Congress. Might be some parallels to today.
scottshea··on Death of Yuri Gagarin demystified 40 years on
I am glad to hear that more is coming out about his death. I think, slowly, Yuri Gagarin's place in American history is being solidified. It would be interesting to find out the process that Gagarin was chosen as the first man. The politics and technical requirements must have been intense. And obviously he had to distinguish himself.
scottshea··on Archaeologists Discover Lost City In Cambodian Jungle
"Injured in three landmine explosions and wearing a prosthetic plastic leg, Heng Heap said..."

The Indiana Jones movies always show ancient traps set around ruins. Maybe they should work in some of the modern day traps as well

scottshea··on Edward Snowden 'missing' in Hong Kong
I imagine that he will keep moving until he gets asylum or some guarantees from the Chinese government.
scottshea··on WorldChat.io: Chat with realtime translation
This is not a feature request by any means. I suspect that this and autocorrect would combine for some seriously funny international humor.
scottshea··on Why do professional photographers charge so much?
I love how this breaks down the time involved outside of the actual picture taking. It is similar for other professions as well; you pay for the hour that you are with them but it covers the hours outside of that time as well.
scottshea··on What happens after Yahoo acquires you (2011)
I think often times large companies purchase smaller ones because they cannot come up with new ideas on their own. Not that they are stupid but that the bureaucracy is too heavy for an idea to germinate into something big.

That same layer of bureaucracy and deadweight that keeps ideas from forming will also crush a new acquisition. The people at the large company are good at maintaining; not growing or inventing. Their nature fights new ideas and new methods.

scottshea··on Bright Explosion on the Moon
And that ladies and gentlemen is why having an atmosphere is a very good thing.
scottshea··on Internet giants, you’re no longer startups, get some customer service
I think this might touch on a larger point. If a startup grows with poor customer service then how incentivized are they to add it later on?
scottshea··on My first year freelancing
Agreed. A friend of mine keeps raises his bidding price as he gets overloaded. If they pay the amount then great; if not it is better than saying "no" to potential business.
scottshea··on My first year freelancing
Totally agree on the price. There have been many of these types of posts on HN in the time I have been following it and all have said the same thing.
scottshea··on Public domain calculator
Actually I did too. And, American-centrism at its finest in me, I wondered why the USA was not on the drop-down until it dawned on me...

I need more caffeine

scottshea··on Layoffs at EA Today
It is comments like this that wish I could up vote several times
scottshea··on The ethical coffee shop freelancer
For me also I take into consideration how much the server has to do for me. For instance if they give free refills and have to come around to my table for it, or even just stand behind the bar and refill when I come up, I will leave an additional tip for them
scottshea··on Young Adults With Autism Can Thrive In High-Tech Jobs
I am glad to see that an ASD based tech company is going for more than just testing. Specialisterne and Aspiritech are excellent but slotting ASD folk into just software testing seemed a bit limiting. Also, the inherent conflict of testing (i.e. telling someone you think they made a mistake) always seemed problematic.
scottshea··on Use Your Unfair Advantage To Create an Unforgettable First Day For New Hires
I have to admit I was a bit scared when I read this too. My introvertness makes me want to run from stuff like this. However I do have to say that there should be some effort to greet the new person. I had one job where I was sat in a cube and no one around me me said hello. I had to reach out and they were so dispirited I got a lukewarm response. It was a chilling effect for a first day.

Oh and I could not do anything with my machine since it was not set up.

scottshea··on Heroku 2X Dynos in Public Beta
Totally. Given the smaller footprint of Puma there is a win available there too as long as you can use JRuby or Rubinius
scottshea··on Heroku 2X Dynos in Public Beta
Keep in mind with more Unicorn workers per box you will need fewer dynos overall so it does not necessarily mean you will have to pay double in the long run. At 1x Dynos we could only have 2 workers going but at 2x we could squeeze five workers in so we use half of the dynos we did before.
scottshea··on Answering your questions about Heroku routing and web performance
I should add that using Unicorn Worker Killer to end a process on thresholds is not a solution as much as it is another stopgap.
scottshea··on Answering your questions about Heroku routing and web performance
Having been part of their efforts to test 2X, and 4X Dynos and using Unicorn long before the RapGenius issue I can tell you the added memory and Unicorn still has issues. We still see periods where queueing is above 500ms. The additional Dyno capacity distributes the chance of queue issues out over a larger numerical set but there is still the possibility of one dyno/Unicorn worker combo getting too much to handle. We use Unicorn Worker Killer to help in that case.
scottshea··on Answering your questions about Heroku routing and web performance
So their solution to the random routing is for the customer to switch to Unicorn/Puma on JRuby. Wow.
scottshea··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2013)
Just as a note... remote work is not okay with them anymore
scottshea··on Rails 3.2.13 - Performance regressions and major bugs
You know when you're already having performance issues on Heroku having a performance regression is not fun.
scottshea··on Bradley Manning Takes "Full Responsibility" for Giving WikiLeaks Government Data
So you lose the right to object anywhere if you do not try the channels provided by the wrong doer to begin with? That makes no sense.

If I see a company engaging in illegal/unethical activity, by your logic I can only go elsewhere after I try to resolve it with them. However what trust do I have that my complaint will be handled well? Moreover if they are in a position of authority over me my only guarantee of protection is a weakly enforced whistle blower law that can be disregarded in cases of national security.

Also, what is your test for acceptable outlet? The NYT is okay but a media outlet without the history of the Grey Lady is not? And Ellsberg gets a pass because he was selective in what he passed on? Honestly if Ellsberg knew about atrocities NOT associated with Vietnam then he should have opened up about those as well.

scottshea··on Adding Concurrency to Rails Apps with Unicorn
I am glad to see them mentioning this. We use Unicorn, and have for quite a while, as a means of lowering the bottlenecks and slow response times. I strongly suggest looking at Unicorn Worker Killer too (https://github.com/kzk/unicorn-worker-killer) given the cap on memory for the dynos
