scottshea··on FBI Arrests CIA Official with $40M in Gold Bars in His Home
This whole thread renews my faith in humanity
scottshea··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
I created a little game for my daughter when she was 3. She would press a button and it would show a random picture. If the picture was her, it played a little song and said You Win.

scottshea··on ‘Every Parent’s Nightmare’: TikTok Is a Venue for Child Sexual Exploitation
Following on to your comment, is this, "TikTok’s algorithm is designed to learn what type of content users like", what almost all social media does to a certain extent?
scottshea··on The FTC plans to curtail the use of non-compete clauses
The one non-compete clause that I signed was very permissive. There was a short list of companies I could not sign with for a year. I felt it was pretty fair to be honest. Otherwise, I do not sign them.
scottshea··on Ask HN: Anyone go through Montessori education until age 12 (end of grade 6)?
My daughter went from 18 months through 8th grade and my wife runs the school so, as you may guess, we are big fans. One thing to look for is the certifications. In the US there are (at least) two main Montessori Certification groups, AMI & AMS. The school my wife runs is AMI but I think AMS would be just as good.

What is slightly different than other experiences here is that the school is a Charter school which poses some challenges but does offer Montessori beyond the normal tuition based model.

As for my daughter, her transition has been fairly smooth. The high school she goes to has more than 10x the students as her old school so is much larger. On the other hand, her grades are good, and she is involved in a number of clubs too.

Montessori is not for everyone but I definitely recommend checking it out.

scottshea··on Not the Time to Get Greedy: House Flippers Getting Burned by US Housing Downturn
Agreed. At the very minimum the interest rates rising should have been a strong warning.
scottshea··on Adobe-Figma deal: “I've never seen a level of investor hatred like this”
"And so Figma has won the hearts and minds of these designers. They love it. It wasn't that they disliked Adobe."

In the small sample size of designers I know, they did not like Adobe

scottshea··on Amtrak cancels all long-distance trains as freight rail strike looms
I am curious how long the strike will actually last. The President has the authority to order them back to work
scottshea··on Ask HN: What was the last purchase you made at Fry's before they went under?
A USB-C charging cable

scottshea··on Where have you gone, Peter Norton? (2014)
Symantec was obligated to pay him a royalty on every box with his picture on it. When I joined Symantec in 1995 they were cursing this royalty and trying to eliminate his picture. Products did not sell as well without it so they kept it until they found it was no longer needed to sell their stuff
scottshea··on Staying awake to treat depression (2018)
Oh my God, THANK YOU! I have used this for years but my psychologists think I am nuts
scottshea··on Signs you’re working in a feature factory (2016)
I once worked in a place where we spent $100,000+ to add a feature that only two customers used. They paid around $8,000 for the feature. It was deemed a success. Features serve Hope while quantifying the value to customers rains on people's parades
scottshea··on Where Have You Gone, Peter Norton? (2014)
When I worked at Symantec in the Peter Norton Group in Santa Monica in 1995 I was told they really wanted to get his picture off of the box as the royalties were too high (reportedly $1 per box but I never did confirm that). They had started the process of minimizing its use so that they could wean the customer off of seeing the image. Still customers loved seeing the picture so there was a constant tension
scottshea··on Domino’s asks SCOTUS to shut down a lawsuit requiring its website be accessible
I have no personal knowledge of this case but having helped companies with their Accessibility deficits in the past I have seen resistance from Marketing who believes that their color scheme is the sole reason anyone uses the site-- despite not having strong enough contrast in colors. And some executives just do not like being told they have to do something
scottshea··on FDA promised a ‘lower-cost option’ to EpiPen, but the price isn’t any lower
Interesting. Our allergist said almost the exact opposite in that they refused to prescribe EpiPen because it was so much higher than Auvi-Q.

And I wonder when EpiPen started issuing testers. We had them for years (me first, then my daughter) and never got one.

scottshea··on FDA promised a ‘lower-cost option’ to EpiPen, but the price isn’t any lower
My daughter has used the Auvi-Q as an alternative. In addition to the active injectors they provided a test one that helped her when the time came: https://www.auvi-q.com

I have not heard of any issues with Auvi-Q since it was reintroduced

scottshea··on How a Fine-Dining Empire Made the Southwest Palatable to Outsiders (2016)

scottshea··on Zillow faces lawsuit over ‘Zestimate’ tool that calculates a house’s worth
It would be great to see how Zillow stacks up to the desktop assessment software used by various mortgage companies and banks.
scottshea··on “What’s your current salary?” is a trap question–Here's how to answer it
I had a horrible phone interview with a company where the recruiter refused to continue until I told them how much I made at my current job. I suspect that they were more interested in a salary survey than actually hiring someone.
scottshea··on Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire AppDynamics
Not the OP but I prefer New Relic's User Interface. AppDynamics has much better Java integration though. Stackify has been trying to make waves and is certainly an option for .Net
scottshea··on CVS just announced a cheap generic alternative to the EpiPen
Potential damage to the injector on each use makes it hard to guarantee a refill will work the same way.
scottshea··on CNN accidentally broadcast 30 minutes of hardcore porn last night
Given how badly CNN has fallen in its standards this did not seem as far fetched as it once might have been
