scorxn··on WD My Book users wake up to find their data deleted
Almost bought one of these, but opted for a raspi and usb3 external drive instead. Works great with Time Machine. https://saschaeggi.medium.com/use-a-raspberry-pi-4-for-time-... was my guide, though I deviated by using ext4 instead of hfs, and didn't need avahi.
scorxn··on Awesome-Selfhosted
I'm so fascinated by the idea of self-hosting email, but /every/ time I see it come up on HN, someone asserts there be dragons, followed by lots of agreement. Maybe I'll try it on a toy domain anyway.
scorxn··on Anxiety is in your body, not your mind
I was almost 30 when I had my first ever panic attack. I was alone and convinced it was a heart attack, called 911, and felt fine by the time the ambulance reached the hospital. Embarrassed, I was ready to brush it off, but instead saw a therapist for the first time. She took out a stopwatch and had me breathe through a narrow straw. Within seconds, my face and limbs went completely numb; I couldn't move, and was amazed that I could form words. I sat with my head in my hands for what felt like forever. Eventually it passed, I felt utterly exhausted, and she asked what I thought the stopwatch said. "I dunno, 10-15 minutes?" Nope, 90 seconds. That experience made me start taking my mental health seriously.
scorxn··on Weaponizing the Web
Can anyone elaborate on how JetBrains was involved? I don't have access to the whole article, and results from my searches are ambiguous.
scorxn··on Why I don't like Tailwind CSS
Not the parent commenter, but I have an app whose web components inherit from a class with this constructor:

  constructor(html) {
    super();
    const link = document.createElement("link");
    link.rel = "stylesheet";
    link.href = "/theme.css";
    const template = document.createElement("template");
    template.innerHTML = html;
    this.attachShadow({ mode: "open" }).append(link, template.content);
  }
Global things like vars, default typography, and input style resets go in theme.css.
scorxn··on Improving Cross-Browser Testing, Part 1: Web Application Testing Today
Exactly the opposite; Selenium and friends have prevented the kicking of countless dogs I've never even met. Thank you!
scorxn··on Writing with Synesthesia, Seeing Colors in Music
A blessing! In my case anyway. It only happens when I intently listen to music: headphones, dark room, clear head. It's like a reward for focusing in. Thankfully it's not intrusive; doesn't happen when I'm driving or working, etc.
scorxn··on How the design of a WWII plane led to the concept of user friendliness (2019)
"The reason why all those pilots were crashing when their B-17s were easing into a landing was that the flaps and landing gear controls looked exactly the same. The pilots were simply reaching for the landing gear, thinking they were ready to land. And instead, they were pulling the wing flaps, slowing their descent, and driving their planes into the ground with the landing gear still tucked in."
scorxn··on If it ain't broke: Share your oldest working gadgets
This was fun to read. "Gadget" definitely needs definition. Does it mean: has moving parts? Requires electricity? Contains "electronics"? If here it means "surpasses its expected lifetime as an electronic device", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casio_F-91W is a strong contender for me.
scorxn··on Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda's Resume. Anyone interested?
No indent below Education is killing me!
scorxn··on YUI Library relaunches with snappy UI
Trebuchet feels dated, especially when bolded and part of blue + orange scheme. That look was very trendy a few years ago. Also, too many faces. Two faces usually work fine. Maybe replace all the Trebuchet with Maven Pro, and all the Lucida with Helvetica. And lose any weight variation you can (eg: since a link is already a different color, it doesn't really need to be bold too).
scorxn··on EBay Inc. Agrees to Acquire Magento
Now would be a great time to build a new FOSS e-commerce platform that runs on commodity hosting.
scorxn··on Open source remakes of games you're still loving

scorxn··on IE6 is Almost Dead. When are you dropping support?
Test in IE 7+. Tack on http://ie6update.com/ Call it a day. We've done this with clients in healthcare, construction, accounting, etc. and all have been pleased.
scorxn··on A handheld SNES emulator that accepts original cartridges
Nope, SNES. http://gear.ign.com/articles/116/1161572p1.html
scorxn··on No-Bullshit Guide to Detecting Everything in HTML5
But if it's not supported, the browser will just try the next font in the CSS declaration. Is there something cooler you can do with detection?
scorxn··on Crapmania
I gotcha. FWIW, simply changing the email subject based on the respondent (or some other id) would let threaded email clients work their magic.

It is annoying how multiple CL convos intermingle, all because they share the same subject line.

scorxn··on Crapmania
"You then get an email address that buyers use to talk with you. None of that email tag like with craigslist."

Having trouble understanding this point. The CL anonymizer forwards to my normal email account. How does that add a step for either party? Or I should say, how does providing a different email address remove steps?

scorxn··on Ask HN: Any health tips?
Despite the ad-peppering, http://www.simplefit.org/ has some good info and a very manageable workout/nutrition schedule.
scorxn··on Michael Arrington just moved to Seattle
Sibling commenters please note that May 3 is International Sarcasm Detector Battery Replacement Day.
scorxn··on Testing the Limits of Credit Card Signatures (Part 1)
The trouble is that most of these "pranks" boil down to testing the attention of service-level employees of corporations. They don't give a shit, and shouldn't, given the realities of filling as many orders as possible during a shift.
scorxn··on Ask HN: Are you with me? Leaving Facebook.
Facebook made the decision for me yesterday. I declined to link all my profile data to business Pages, so everything I'd bothered to maintain was wiped out. It was clear I'm no longer part of their intended user base.

It's fine. I have no interest in participating in an ad network, so I wiped out the rest (friends, photos, etc) and publicized alternate contact info. Gotta keep the account for some of my clients' Pages.

Facebook was great for me ca. 2004-5. Now its goals and policies are very different. Maybe more people will get shocked away when tagging + image recognition start imposing on their family photos.

scorxn··on Jason Calacanis at his finest
In which case you have an opportunity to wake up the next day, decidedly the bigger person, wholly assured in your decision to leave, and with no regrets about how you did so.
scorxn··on Jason Calacanis at his finest
I'm admittedly assuming, based on the severity of Jason's reaction, that the email was the first he'd heard of Evan's resignation.

Had it been a face-to-face conversation, then a letter, the fireworks could have been avoided. Speaking from first-hand experience, it can be absolutely gut-wrenching, but ultimately feels like the right thing to do.

scorxn··on Jason Calacanis at his finest
Withholding judgement and taking that tweet at face value, it does touch on something important. Usually when entering a job, a candidate will be excited and say just about anything. "Hell yeah I could see myself here for the next 5 years!" Who knows if that happened here.

The employer may take on certain expectations, possibility choosing a hire based on that enthusiasm and apparent commitment. Either way, no one expects a new employee to a) dislike a place soon after coming onboard, or b) abruptly take another offer. Is 12 months abrupt? Depends on the expectations.

It's a difficult situation that has to be handled tactfully on both sides. Doesn't appear to have happened here: Jason for his response, Evan for resigning _via email_.

scorxn··on The Jakarta Incident, or Rebooting 747 Engines In Flight
Cool that they released the photos. Any insight into what we're seeing there, and how it poses a risk?
scorxn··on More Web Inspector Updates
It also has some presentation issues on longhand overrides of shorthand rules. Eg: If I override margin:0 with margin-top:1em, the margin:0 rule is not struckthrough.

Granted, the most accurate way to present that override would be to display margin: 0 0 0 0, with only the first 0 struckthrough. But that deviates from the written code and becomes more difficult to track.

scorxn··on Beautiful iPad code editor concept
Good call. We can't afford to give a circle-jerking designer the benefit of the doubt, or do something even more drastic like actually ask him. Anyway, who wants to rate my app?!
scorxn··on Google Developing Tablet to Take on iPad
What are the odds Google could offer free 3G with the device? Kindle pulls it off, but builds the cost into content. Maybe a new ad network?
scorxn··on 0to255
Too much choice I think. "0to255 is a simple tool that helps web _designers_ find variations of any color." Designers already have offline tools to explore full color spectra.

Tools that turn color theory into recommendation algorithms are much more useful. Illustrator introduced a "Color Guide" palette for this and it's great. Would be even better as a free online tool. Doesn't necessarily need to be user-contributed like Kuler.
