scorxn··on A warning about 'model welfare'
How will it turn out?
scorxn··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
Why was the headline altered?
scorxn··on Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader
My cynical take: these cute little things still end up in landfills, and my 5+ year old phone runs the kindle app just fine.
scorxn··on Removing React.js from the codebase and adapting Htmx for UI interactivity (2023)
That's the architecture my B2B SaaS uses, except Vue instead of React. We deploy the SPA to a CDN and it feels snappy. Some clients access the API directly via OAuth. django-allauth is the other critical piece. Works great altogether.
scorxn··on Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 22GB Memory Appears on eBay for USD500
Hmm, not sure what you mean. The consumer cards from AMD and Nvidia are still gaming-first, and games utilize new features like ray-tracing and DSS. Speaking as a lifelong PC gamer and current Twitch addict, the industry still seems very healthy.
scorxn··on Details of the new Suzuki Omnichord OM-108
https://newatlas.com/music/suzuki-omnichord-om108/ says $750
scorxn··on Beekeeper Studio SQL editor 4.0 – Import. backup, restore, and bigquery
I use the free “community” edition daily: https://github.com/beekeeper-studio/beekeeper-studio/release...
scorxn··on Valve releases Counter-Strike 2
Agree with these points, but at 1.5 I'd insert: intimate knowledge of the maps. "Holding angles" is such a profound advantage, and requires knowing the maps inside-and-out.
scorxn··on Casio Caleid XM-700 Mobile Navigator (1997)
Oh man, what a fun era of tech. I had a REX 6000 that I adored.
scorxn··on One can scarcely help clarifying him: on the Brothers Karamazov
Super interesting to read everyone's opinions about C&P. I too was force-fed lots of classics in school, and practically always resorted to CliffsNotes. For whatever reason, C&P struck such a chord with me, I "couldn't put it down", won a scholarship writing about it, and got to skip a bunch of Lit classes in college :)
scorxn··on Official Chrome extension to use iCloud Keychain Passwords
The password management was reincorporated into the Firefox app, and you can tell iOS to use Firefox as your password manager. See bottom of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/end-of-support-firefox-...
scorxn··on Official Chrome extension to use iCloud Keychain Passwords
Check out Firefox if you need a cross-platform browser that syncs passwords, etc. I use Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS, and I've found Firefox to be my best option.
scorxn··on ThinMachine – A $25 thin client macOS Time Machine appliance
I feel ya. My RPi does indeed have a case, with a fan. The backups are offloaded to an external HDD.
scorxn··on ThinMachine – A $25 thin client macOS Time Machine appliance
I have a Raspberry Pi running Pi-hole and Time Machine, making that little board probably the best value piece of tech I've ever owned. https://saschaeggi.medium.com/use-a-raspberry-pi-4-for-time-... is what I followed.
scorxn··on The Value of Personal Data in Internet Commerce
> Recent data regulations in China, Europe and US restricts Internet platforms

This typo could be taken the wrong way. Couple options:

Recent data regulation in China, Europe and US restricts...

Or, Recent data regulations in China, Europe and US restrict...

scorxn··on Searching for Meg White
The White Stripes are probably my all-time favorite band. As much as I'd love to see Meg perform again, let her do her.
scorxn··on Manjaro is a free and open source Linux operating system that emphasizes privacy
I've been trying out Linux distros since the late 90s. I recognize Mint's reputation as a Windows alternative for Linux noobs. But it's honestly the best OS I've used on any platform since... Snow Leopard? With Cinnamon anyway (the default), it's polished, fast, and has a perfect set of default apps for what I need to do.
scorxn··on LSD: Not Even Once
Set and setting are enormously important when taking anything, even alcohol or caffeine. If you're in a bad mood or uncomfortable space, drugs will probably make it worse.
scorxn··on Node.js 20 is now available
deno's built-in test runner is also a big selling point for me, and Node.js 20 is declaring theirs (node:test) to be stable.
scorxn··on Safe deposit boxes aren’t safe (2019)
The end of the article made me wonder: are museums insured for theft? Maybe they could offer safe deposit boxes :)
scorxn··on Sim Wong Hoo has died
RIP. Creative is a brand I'll love forever, having come into PC gaming in the 90's (Sound Blaster). My desktop speakers are still Creative.
scorxn··on Tell HN: Happy New Year
Happy New Year's from New Orleans!
scorxn··on Bra size calculator
Thanks so much for posting this! https://www.reddit.com/r/ABraThatFits/comments/rh26h/comment... was a life-changer. Happy to see it codified with a calculator.
scorxn··on Ask HN: I'm looking for some new spreadsheet software what are people using?
I'm a big fan of Gnumeric for all my personal stuff. It's not as feature-rich as Excel, but does everything I need, and is fast and focused.

scorxn··on Software I’m thankful for (2021)
I'd have to add Pi-hole to this list. Anytime I browse the web on another network, I'm reminded just how much crippling ad garbage it's sparing me.
scorxn··on IKEA's restaurants were failing, then it turned to Swedish meatballs
Wow, I hadn't seen this channel before and LOVE the authenticity and first-person POV. Thanks for sharing!
scorxn··on Are the Great Lakes really inland seas?
Re: appreciation, yes. The Great Lakes are unique and amazing. The more you travel, the more you realize it. I love hearing from people who visited the Great Lakes and were like: I can't see land on the horizon! This is an ocean! But also, no jellyfish +1
scorxn··on Scattered thoughts on why I waste my own time
Allowing oneself to be bored, or at least idle, without self-judgement, can be extremely valuable. You're likely processing things in the background (often without realizing it), which will make your active decisions and activities easier.
scorxn··on DuckDuckGo has had 0 search warrants since founding in 2008
I have the same concern. As long as they're shipped as a search option for every major browser, even on mobile, I have hope.
scorxn··on Canyon.mid
Oh goodness, the nostalgia chills. Now to find In the Hall of the Mountain King.
