schwarrrtz··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted working on a product?
That's fair. Still, I suspect the use cases are very different. People who use guns for hunting and defense against large animals don't need concealed carry permits, nor do they need to carry their guns in the city. People who use guns for sport don't need their guns anywhere except at the firing range.
schwarrrtz··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted working on a product?
So, you’re saying that about 1 out of every 5 times a gun is used, it is used for a criminal act? And... you think that’s a good statistic?
schwarrrtz··on Boeing-Backed Startup Lands JetSuite for Electric Plane's Debut
Have you heard of bicycles?
schwarrrtz··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
Case in point: ads in Windows 10.
schwarrrtz··on Robert Langlands, who linked number theory, analysis, and geometry (2015)
With respect - you are both being overly general about Canadian media, and showing an American bias. The Star is not representative of all Canadian media, and there are many American publications that trumpet American exceptionalism at every opportunity.
schwarrrtz··on Elon Musk: SpaceX and Tesla almost went bankrupt in 2008
This isn’t really a news article. Almost everything in here was covered in the Vance book.
schwarrrtz··on First firing of air-breathing electric thruster
It’s an elephant!
schwarrrtz··on U.S. tests nuclear power system to sustain astronauts on Mars
What power source do you propose for a long-duration human mission to Mars, if not nuclear? Solar won’t work, given the loss of output during a dust storm.
schwarrrtz··on Google forked Swift
Because Google devs write iOS apps, presumably in Swift, and want to contribute to the development of the language they use?

Seems like the simplest explanation to me.

schwarrrtz··on Hyperloop One Becomes ‘Virgin Hyperloop One’
> Didn't he actually design the first rocket himself?

I'm pretty sure there were core employees (not Musk) working on every part of the rocket from the beginning. This is documented in the Vance biography, IIRC.

schwarrrtz··on SpaceX: Making Life Multiplanetary [video]
Carbon neutral assuming you are creating the CH4 using atmospheric CO2. On Earth I suspect that most CH4 comes from natural gas. On Mars it would be carbon neutral - but that's actually a bad thing, assuming that your goal is to increase the atmospheric density on Mars.
schwarrrtz··on Anthony Levandowski, self driving car whiz who fell from grace
Sexist drivel has no place here. The logout button is at the right hand side of the navbar.
schwarrrtz··on Read Apple CEO Tim Cook's Email to Employees About Charlottesville
Can anyone at Apple comment on the perception of Cook inside the company? He seems like a fairly inspiring leader to me, considering his position on LGBT issues, the FBI decryption incident, and now this. I don't work for him, though, and I'd be interested to hear from someone who does.
schwarrrtz··on The Crisis of Connected Cars: When Vulnerabilities Affect the CAN Standard
The takeaway is that by tampering only with CAN messages sent by a particular system, you can force that system to disconnect from the network. For example, an attacker might use this exploit to disable the airbag, or disable the engine while the car is driving, or cause other safety problems.
schwarrrtz··on Salesforce fires red team staffers who gave Defcon talk
It's also a complete HR catastrophe. How could anyone feel comfortable in their position, knowing they could be fired at any moment, publicly and without warning? Terrorizing your employees is completely unacceptable as a manager.

Edit: I guess I don't have much experience with HR at large companies - I use the term to refer to aspects of management related to maintaining employee wellbeing, workplace culture etc.

schwarrrtz··on How Canada became an education superpower
Ok so I have some actual stats now:

> More than 45 per cent of Metro Vancouver residents are foreign born, according to the 2011 census. There are only three major cities on the globe that have a higher percentage of foreign-born residents.

> They are Dubai, Brussels and Toronto.

schwarrrtz··on How Canada became an education superpower
> Migrants coming to Canada, many from countries such as China, India and Pakistan, are often relatively well-educated and ambitious to see their children get into professional careers.

> Prof Jerrim says these families have an immigrant "hunger" to succeed, and their high expectations are likely to boost school results for their children.

Speaking from personal experience as a native Canadian, this can also motivate non-immigrant children to work harder. When half of your peers have an immigrant's work ethic it can be a real positive influence.

Disclaimer: this is an anecdote, my personal experience may not generalize, etc.

schwarrrtz··on SpaceX Successfully Launches and Lands Second Reused Rocket
I'm not saying that video wouldn't be helpful, just that realtime video wouldn't be helpful. They surely record the video for later analysis as others have mentioned.
schwarrrtz··on SpaceX Successfully Launches and Lands Second Reused Rocket
I mean, it's not like a really robust realtime feed would be much help for them anyway. As far as I know the rocket is completely autonomous, so even if something was going wrong during the landing a higher-quality feed would just give them higher-quality reasons to tear their hair out etc.
schwarrrtz··on After Misjudging Market, Bike Maker Vanhawks (YC W16) Has Been Resurrected
The article is dated Oct 18th.
schwarrrtz··on Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer to Make $186M from Verizon Deal
> One of the things that really killed Yahoo, that no one talks about, is that they had these security people called Paranoids. They were great, super smart, always available, BUT, they held sway over everything and it was very very easy to just say, "naw, forget that 6 months of work, throw it all away, the Paranoids say we can't put it on production machines."

I'm pretty surprised to hear that Yahoo had a security team with that much influence, given their leak of over 1bn accounts and subsequent failure to disclose that information for 3 years.

schwarrrtz··on Why the Dow is a useless market index
Relevant episode of Planet Money:

http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2017/01/04/508261371/episo...

"It's no secret that we here at Planet Money think the Dow is a terrible economic indicator. We don't like that it only looks at thirty companies. We don't like the way it does its math. We think it does a bad job reflecting the overall economy. Honestly, we're not sure why everyone is still talking about it."

schwarrrtz··on SpaceX to Send Privately Crewed Dragon Spacecraft Beyond the Moon Next Year
Something tells me they wouldn't both go on the same trip, given the risk.
schwarrrtz··on Google Spreadsheets and Python
This is one of the reasons why I liked working with Parse; the data browser was very handy. This seems like a great alternative.
schwarrrtz··on The Voder, the First Machine to Create Human Speech

schwarrrtz··on Guide on how to design keyboard PCBs
Pretty sure each cap is associated with a particular pin on the microcontroller.
schwarrrtz··on EPA Notifies Fiat Chrysler of Clean Air Act Violations
I think the outrage is justified; how can we possibly coordinate an effort to reduce our environmental impact without respecting the relevant regulations? To extend your example, suppose new regulations are introduced that reduce emissions limits by 50%. An automaker that respects the regulations would likely modify their products in order to remain in compliance, thereby reducing their environmental impact by 50%. On the other hand, an automaker that disregards the regulations would likely take no action and the environmental damage would continue.
schwarrrtz··on Developers’ side projects
At my last job working for a small software company, I was able to get my boss to modify the employment contract such that a specific list of other projects (attached as an appendix to the contract) was excluded from the work product & IP ownership clauses. The idea was that if I wanted to work on a side project, I would clear it with him first, and then we would sign a quick amending agreement to the original contract which added the new side project to the list.

Major caveats: I haven't ever tested this method in an actual legal dispute. Also, the negotiation involved a shouting match in a crowded bar. YMMV.

schwarrrtz··on Angular 2 is terrible
Gotcha, thanks for clarifying. I didn't realize they had introduced significant changes to the conceptual model.
schwarrrtz··on Angular 2 is terrible
Well Angular was initially released three years earlier than React was. Also, React is all about one-way data flows, and Angular is all about two-way bindings, so that's one noteable difference in goals.
