sanmon3186··on AI is a front for consolidation of resources and power
Why would you wait for dust to settle down? Just curious. Productivity gains are real in current form of LLMs. Guardrails and best practices can be learnt and self imposed.

sanmon3186··on India launches attack on 9 sites in Pakistan and Pakistani Jammu and Kashmir
Almost none. Even if this situation prolongs, it will only affect the bordering areas in the north. India cannot afford a war if it wants to grow as it projects itself on the international stage as an alternative to China. Pakistan cannot afford it financially.
sanmon3186··on Stoop Coffee: A simple idea transformed my neighborhood
I am Indian. Not sure if this is because there are too many of us but except for part of cities these days, social connections like these are normal.

I have at least a dozen neighbours, I can walk in (uninvited), have tea and gossip. And not all of them are necessarily my friends. Some are.

Pretty much everyone I know has their little neighbourhood circle like this.

sanmon3186··on The Sikh Practice of Langar, a Free Meal Where Everyone Is Equal
It’s not uncommon for Hindus from northern India to worship Sikh Gurus alongside their own deities. Similarly Sikhs often visit Hindu temples. This is generally not seen as unusual.

While there have been some instances of tension between the two communities, things are not as bad as media might suggest.

sanmon3186··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Maybe it's just my echo chamber but people in India seemed more pro-Trump. This is despite Kamala having Indian roots. People usually take pride when anyone with Indian ancestry doing great on the world stage.
sanmon3186··on Common side effects of not drinking
I do drink occasionally but I can go forever without drinking. It doesn’t bother me.

My relationship with smoking is different though. I smoke on occasion but I crave it for the next day or two. If someone told me smoking was healthy, I would start today.

I strongly advise against getting into casual smoking.

sanmon3186··on GPT-4o mini: advancing cost-efficient intelligence
>I had to do a heuristic layer on top to break up the PDFs into small chunks so the output didn’t overflow

How do you stitch the outputs of all chunks without losing the overall context?

sanmon3186··on Show HN: Plandex – an AI coding engine for complex tasks
What’s your experience with API cost? I've also tried something similar, but I often end up using up my balance too quickly.
sanmon3186··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
> Microsoft has access to almost everything OpenAI does. And now Altman and Brockman will have that access too.

Microsoft still has to deal with OpenAI as an entity to keep the existing set up intact. The new team has to kinda start from zero. Right?

sanmon3186··on India ruling party's IT cell used AI to show smile on arrested protesters' faces
Sure let’s start from your post title itself. What “authentic” source do you have that the origin of this is BJP IT cell?
sanmon3186··on India ruling party's IT cell used AI to show smile on arrested protesters' faces
Also the post has been editorialised. Sure parties have IT cells doing all kind of things to build narratives, but I am not so sure if there are basis for the inference in this case.

Even if political, I personally expect better on HN.

sanmon3186··on Internet disrupted in Pakistan amid arrest of former PM Imran Khan
Is it the same research that put Pakistan and Afghanistan way above India?
sanmon3186··on Indian government empowers itself to “fact check,” delete social media posts
Last I checked India was home for second largest Muslim population, and population has only been growing, more than other sections of societies in India.

Sure things aren’t same for Muslims post 2014 and people should raise their voice. However for every Muslim atrocity, there is one against Hindus or any other religion. Should we take comfort in that? Absolutely no, but this genocide nonsense is utter rubbish.

sanmon3186··on Indian government empowers itself to “fact check,” delete social media posts
This is failure of law and order. What bothered me is how liberal media portrayed these individuals.

The primary identity of individuals killed is undertrials (as you rightly mentioned) or murderers or criminals, and not lawmakers or MPs as portrayed by these headlines.

sanmon3186··on India’s government wants total control of the internet
From the article you shared: > Russia passes law to jail people for 15 days for 'disrespecting' government

Pick up any 24x7 Indian news channels, and you can find govt being disrespected by half of the panel. Sure that doesn't justify certain action by the govt but I too think, one needs to be in India to understand India.

Modi or no Modi, things have been same as far I recall. Only new we have now is free internet which has amplified everything.

sanmon3186··on Ask HN: What is your new year's resolution?
I have same old new year resolutions but past few years, this is what I have been doing.

For the year that passed, I go over my phone photo album, recall key events in life of family members, friends I met, books I read, major purchases, basic fitness parameters (mostly from Apple Watch, weight etc), financial health, progress made in hobbies. I write these down on a paper. Not very detailed though.

Looking back it’s been a great experience to see the life progression.

sanmon3186··on Ask HN: What was the best software that you used during 2022?
With canvas feature on obsidian, I am having second thoughts on excalidraw plugin.
sanmon3186··on Barnes and Noble's surprising turnaround
Recommendations is just one of the aspects. We love books as a tangible medium of knowledge, for collection, for signaling and so on.

Movies in disks, comes with friction which isn’t worth IMO.

sanmon3186··on Indian lawmaker arrested after tweet criticising Narendra Modi
While I understand the emotion but anyone who believes that 200 million Muslims in a country are a target for genocide, is being unfair. Situation isn’t as straightforward.
sanmon3186··on Ask HN: Have you ever experienced any paranormal or unexplained phenomena?
#1... I used to work in different country, when my father suddenly passed away. I used to stay alone in an apartment, and had no knowledge of he being admitted to the hospital. Last I spoke to him, he was busy with (my) marriage preparation, that was planned a month later.

I had a couple of weird experiences (will not share here) while making my dinner late at night. I got creeped out to the extent, that I knocked my next door buddies. Had no history of such occurrences before and after. Few hours later, I got the call from home.

sanmon3186··on Trapped in Silicon Valley’s hidden caste system
I knew someone would say that.

Caste issues are much more complex in my view. Feel free to disagree.

Imagine having two friends, one dirt poor and another fairly rich (but comes from a lower caste). Both appears in an entrance exams for the engineering degree. The poor score 99% but fails to make it but the rich dude who score 70% makes it to the college. He gets caste reservation.

One may say that reservation is is off topic but is it really? It is a lifelong reminder of who you are, to both the friends.

The poor friend who somehow makes it to the Silicon Valley, is often reminded of his caste privileges.

The rich lower caste friend, gets discriminated for his caste and economic privileges that others find undeserving.

sanmon3186··on Trapped in Silicon Valley’s hidden caste system
I understand where you are coming from. I am not lower-class and may have my biases, but unlike Siddhant in the story, I got my first bicycle (a second hand) at the age of 23 to commute within college campus while doing my masters. So I have definitely not lived in some urban bubble, away from the grassroot issues in the country.

I am not denying the discrimination in the industry. It is the magnitude that I have my doubts on.

sanmon3186··on Winning Wordle
QUOTA and RILEY are my go to opening words.
sanmon3186··on Trapped in Silicon Valley’s hidden caste system
Every time such articles pop-up, I wonder what rock am I living under. In 22 years of experience (Half in US/UK and rest in India) in eight global organizations, not even a single time I heard or witnessed any cast based biases. What we regularly see is region/lingustic biases.

Cast based discrimination exist in India, but in my experience the issue is overblown in the knowledge industry.

sanmon3186··on Why Brahmins lead Western firms but rarely Indian ones
I second that. I have been in the industry for two decades (three continents with most time spent in India) and never in my career I encountered communication around someone’s caste at workplace. Every time I come across such topics, I casually discuss this up with my colleague friends and there is hardly anyone who seems to cares.

On the other hand, what i find more visible is regionalism. It is common to stereotype say a Punjabi, a Bihari or Tamil or a Marathi. Both in front of behind each others’ back.

sanmon3186··on Ask HN: What’s the most outrageous belief you’re confident is true?
Though you acknowledged the bias against non native English speakers, I feel that’s a huge bias. I for one can write two pages comment on Reddit without thinking, but I never dare to so on HN. I feel the pressure to be succinct on HN and being a non-English, that’s not easy. And it’s not (primarily) because of vocabulary.
sanmon3186··on NFT misconception: JPEG aren't stored on the Blockchain
May be a dumb question but how can we certify that the same asset doesn’t exist as two or more NFTs on different block chains. There are tons of them and each can have its own monalisa.
sanmon3186··on Key Modi rival Rahul Gandhi among potential Indian targets of NSO client
No matter which party you pick in India, there is political dynasty. Personally I don’t see that as a problem if collective experience benefits the country.

With congress, the problem is much deeper. You have one family at the helm of affairs that has practically “zero” collective experience running any kind of ministry or a state or whatever in last 30 years (since Rajeev Gandhi died in 1991).

All they have is brand “Gandhi” using which they want to use to control the country but not being directly accountable for it.
