ryanSrich··on Satoshi – Sirius emails 2009-2011
> It'd be tough to get three people to keep this quiet

Incompetence fallacy and impossibility complex. Just because something seems difficult or impossible doesn't mean it is. Especially when it's the most logical explanation. People often like to think the government is just a bunch of incompetent bureaucrats. Yet the U.S. government is the most powerful entity on earth. There's not a single reason to believe that any large number of government employees could keep a secret on the level of Satoshi's true identity.

ryanSrich··on Latest GPT-4 training data updated to December 2023
Not entirely related to just GPT-4, but I feel like not many updates will matter for ChatGPT until they completely overhaul the system prompt. This seems to be the reason why ChatGPT has gotten "dumber". https://twitter.com/AlphaSignalAI/status/1757466498287722783
ryanSrich··on Weaveworks is shutting down
> I feel like the next generation of this type of company is smaller consultancies that have awesome developers that build customer tooling on the side. But the main revenue driver is consultancy.

The issue here is the lack of appeal for investors, leading to a tenfold decrease in new cos. However, the startups that do launch are likely to be more sustainable

ryanSrich··on CEOs Are Using Return to Office Mandates to Mask Poor Management
> your best employees are the ones who have the most options outside of your company

Aren't these employees the most likely to get exceptions though?

ryanSrich··on CEOs Are Using Return to Office Mandates to Mask Poor Management
Sounds like a PR-friendly way to do layoffs. Force people back into the office knowing 30%+ are going to quit.
ryanSrich··on Remote work doesn't seem to affect productivity, Fed study finds
Managing 50+ remote workers taught me that results matter, not hours. It's all about the output. Work asynchronously, focus on the end goal, and as long as it's legal and ethical, the 'how' and 'when' are often irrelevant. Traditional managers struggle with this mindset, often due to their own managers outdated approaches.

The real game changer is axing all scheduled internal meetings. No standups, no weekly grooming, no syncs. Scrap these time-wasters and you'll be surprised at the productivity spike. If not, then you likely don't have the right people working for you.

ryanSrich··on Ask HN: What's the best car without undesirable features?
Ah, totally missed that part. I was mostly thinking about the low/no tech angle.
ryanSrich··on Ask HN: What's the best car without undesirable features?
The new LandCruiser 70 series matches exactly what you want. I believe you can buy them in many countries (U.S. not included).

ryanSrich··on Notion Calendar
This is why I love using obsidian. It's just a directory of markdown files on my computer.
ryanSrich··on Notion Calendar
It's totally a failure of the platforms. Some of the permissions I've had to request from the Slack API to do the simplest things are insane. Not to mention the "justification" for requesting certain scopes. Like what? You want me to justify a permission that I have no justification for, and I only need it to do this other very unrelated operation.
ryanSrich··on Posthog is closing their Slack community in favor of forum
The list of things I hate about it is longer than the list of things I like about it. Certainly the workspace selector is miles better. Almost everything else is worse.
ryanSrich··on Posthog is closing their Slack community in favor of forum
Discord is the one I struggle with. I have 30+ slack workspaces, but with the new design I can hide all of them except for the in context one. It's an improvement over the old UI.

Discord still doesn't have this, I belong to 100+ discord servers, and the notifications are a pure nightmare, impossible to find the server you want.

ryanSrich··on Cloudflare Termination Video: A Master Class in How Not to Terminate Someone
I agree.

BUT, having worked in tech for well over a decade now, you should absolutely 100% not believe any feedback that's given to you. She's in sales. She should understand that there's exactly 1 metric that matters, closing deals. I'm not saying it's her fault she got fired, but this should really be a lesson for everyone watching this video. Do not believe what they tell you.

ryanSrich··on Ask HN: What is the current driver of tech layoffs?
From what I recall, the tax credit is used for products that aren't yet available to the market.

So let's say a company needs 5 years to build some new hardware. Those 5 years of labor and expenses are all R&D.

I think that's why this is such a big deal. I could be wrong though.

ryanSrich··on Rabbit: LLM-First Mobile Phone
No one ever shows what these should and could actually be used for - incredibly boring and repetitive tasks. "Hey rabbit, respond to the support ticket you just told me about with XYZ". "Hey rabbit, find all of the sales meetings I had last week, cross reference the emails of the attendees with existing emails threads, and then generate follow ups for each. Keep them short, to the point, and read them back to me before you send"

Like where is this? This is what I want. Not some voice assisted way of booking an Uber or some shit.

ryanSrich··on Database of artists used to train Midjourney AI garners criticism
The vast majority listen to ads in order to listen to it for free. Artists make almost nothing on streaming. It completely changed history.
ryanSrich··on Microsoft Copilot iOS App
Anyone tested this against perplexity yet? I assume it's more or less attempting to compete with that as opposed to ChatGPT.
ryanSrich··on T-Mobile introduce fines from Jan 1 for "Code of Conduct" violations
No one is making you use Knowbe4. As someone that founded a company in this space, the amount of people that hate SAT and Phishing sims purely based on their experience with certain companies is tremendous.
ryanSrich··on T-Mobile introduce fines from Jan 1 for "Code of Conduct" violations
Training and simulations absolutely do reduce the likelihood of an event.

Most companies don't use these tools correctly, and certainly the technical audience here on HN will despise them. But phishing simulations can reduce your risk.

ryanSrich··on Ask HN: How do I train a custom LLM/ChatGPT on my own documents in Dec 2023?
What would be nice is some type of box or device I connect to a computer. I then give it full access to the system. It trains itself on all of the data on that computer. The device is now a portable LLM.
ryanSrich··on T-Mobile introduce fines from Jan 1 for "Code of Conduct" violations
I wonder if phishing simulations are allowed. There's nothing explicit in the code of conduct (at least none that I could find with a quick search). Smishing sims are a great way to train staff on phishing, and disallowing them would be somewhat antithetical to their explicit mission here of protecting they users.
ryanSrich··on Catalyst – Tailwind CSS Application UI Kit
Is tailwindui associated with tailwindCSS? If not, then the lack of completeness and quality of this UI kit says nothing about tailwindCSS.
ryanSrich··on Rolex fined $100M for preventing its watches being sold online
This is why I've always liked Omega. Not as high status as Rolex, but a luxury watch nonetheless, and one you can easily purchase direct online.
ryanSrich··on NASA study finds life-sparking energy source and molecule at Enceladus
If we're just having fun here, then I'd say it doesn't have a creator. Which is not a concept humans are capable of understanding. It could be the demiurge is eternal, forever and always. The concept of time may have been an invention by such a creator.
ryanSrich··on NASA study finds life-sparking energy source and molecule at Enceladus
The simple answer is the controversial answer. Life needs something to spark it from nothing to something. That's more evidence of a demiurge than anything else.
ryanSrich··on NASA study finds life-sparking energy source and molecule at Enceladus
The math is the evidence. The math is not in your naysaying favor.
ryanSrich··on Show HN: Cujobay – A Modern Alternative to Crunchbase
How do I grab funding or number of employees or industry? I grab these from the crunchbase api. How is this a competitor?
ryanSrich··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
The upvote to comment ratio is off (too many comments and not enough upvotes), which is a negative signal to the HN algorithm.
ryanSrich··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
The one thing I could not figure out about Amazon music is that when I would type in an album, and start playing it, the songs would reshuffle based on which songs I would listen to the most. It drove me insane, and caused me to cancel the trial before it was even up. I couldn't figure out how to play an album in the actual order of the album. Dumbest feature I've seen in a product, maybe ever.
ryanSrich··on Sam Altman, OpenAI board open talks to negotiate his possible return
Sam's criticality has nothing to do with the technical capabilities of OAI, but everything to do with the commercialization of OAI.
