Physics, system design, lab automation, magnetic microfluidics, cell culture, genomics. These are a few of my favorite things.

rubidium··on People can read their manager's mind (2015)
Generally, managers work on ensuring the business keeps surviving. That’s their main responsibility. Staffing, retention, alignment of sales/ development, etc.

Most good management does that well in harmony with the product. Bad management focuses on that at the expense of the product.

rubidium··on Walmart to close three tech hubs, tells tech staff to return to offices
Won’t matter in US. At will.
rubidium··on Is Seattle a 15-minute city? It depends on where you want to walk
Would you mind naming the shop and location? I’ve been tossing a similar idea around and would love to contact the owners to learn from them.
rubidium··on AI Generated Seinfeld runs 24/7 on Twitch
That was my immediate reaction to seeing chatGPT. Any digital content, fully customized, can be created with minimal human input.

The quality of the content is still crap, but that will improve with time. And the audience getting dumber to think it’s fine will speed up the process.

rubidium··on Google layoffs Jan 20, 2023 – California WARN public records
Or cut in half and merged. That’s mostly how director/ vp positions disappear. Two groups merge to one, and any redundancy gets eliminated.
rubidium··on Meta Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2022 Results
For local businesses, direct mail, signage, and door to door is still totally an option.
rubidium··on Why ultra-light urban vehicles offer the only viable future for EVs
No so great in climates that have 4 actual seasons.
rubidium··on Why ultra-light urban vehicles offer the only viable future for EVs
Cute concept car. If your only user need for a car is “I need to commute 5-30 minutes a day in normal urban traffic” then it will tick the box. I’m genuinely curious how many people in the world are in that category.
rubidium··on WTF with high school questions?
As a hiring manager, I’d be _more_ interested in hiring the person after hearing this. Especially if the reason they were insubordinate made sense!
rubidium··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
I saw it in Minnesota, Oregon, and DC in 2000-2003… so quite some time. This is barista made drinks, not your Dunkin’ Donuts brewed coffee.

It took the form of a tip jar. It was my main source of gas money when a barista.

rubidium··on Letter to Sundar Pichai from TCI Fund Management [pdf]
No established company invests 75% of their people into new features and services. There was definitely bloat. The degree of bloat is the unknown.
rubidium··on Letter to Sundar Pichai from TCI Fund Management [pdf]
2% improvement in opex. Demonstrating ability to trim staff without affecting revenue. Both matter to investors.
rubidium··on Things I Learned from My 2 Year Old Baby Girl
The lens of cost / benefit is no way to live, and is a sure road to misery. Scrooge.
rubidium··on Show HN: I spent 2 years building Tablane as a 17-year-old
Bullshit.

The web is full of crap. To really learn you need to learn how to learn. Education still matters. Otherwise you’re just a gpt4 prompt monkey.

I’ve found many times in my life where the internet doesn’t know anything about what I’m trying to figure out. Your “just google It” recommendation is destructive.

rubidium··on Coworkers are less ambitious; bosses adjust to the new order
Yes they are. In fact, one’s performance objective in many cases depend on effective teamwork with one’s peers. And then there are the behavior part of performance reviews where you’re graded on intangibles like teamwork, trust-building, etc…

Performance review systems will always have flaws, but it’s better (in nearly all workplaces) to have a formal and transparent process for them than to have none at all.

rubidium··on Ask HN: In-depth sites for various industries' news?
Biotech industry: https://www.fiercebiotech.com/

Biotech how-tos: https://bitesizebio.com/

rubidium··on It’s not Tourette’s but a new type of mass sociogenic illness
All behavior is total behavior, so it doesn’t really matter. Article makes the point that this is attention seeking behavior and often used as an excuse to avoid unpleasant tasks. Whether the teens are aware they are choosing the tic, eventually it becomes habitual and they “can’t stop”. Except they can after meeting with a trained phycologist. Get to the root of the behavior and usually the behavior goes away.
rubidium··on Gut epithelial barrier damage caused by dishwasher detergents and rinse aids
Nice to be #1 in something. But that explains a lot.
rubidium··on The New York Times made a weird editorial decision with its tech coverage
If you’ve ever had first hand experience with what investigative journalists write, it’s not all true. The better ones do a good job, in the worse ones their editorial opinion shines through.
rubidium··on Ask HN: Is Anyone Else Tired of the Self Enforced Limits on AI Tech?
You’re free bud. You can make it and release. But you have no standing to just complain about it.
rubidium··on Experiments spell doom for physical-collapse explanation of quantum weirdness
Many worlds is just some peoples favorite because they get too weirded out but indeterminism. They prefer a billiard ball universe and so invented the hairbrained many worlds theory.
rubidium··on The dry-season malaria paradox, a bar to eradication, is solved
There’s likely a lot less of them and they’re not moving around, making it easier to eradicate.

Have a team of people hit the 50 known hiding spots in your “county/district/diocese sized equivalent” every season is an achievable plan.

rubidium··on Ask HN: How to learn to sell?
Ooo, that was their first mistake. Rules for selling to restaurants: (1) go 3 hours before they open on a non busy weekday (eg Tuesday-Thursday) and knock on the back door (or just walk in!). If a breakfast place, buy a coffee just after the morning rush (9:30), then proceed to step (2).

(2) say to the first person you see, “are you the owner/manager?”

(3) either get directed to them immediately or get their phone number

(4) have a 1-2 minute pitch , either deliver directly or on the phone.

(5) if they really do seem to have time and interest keep selling. Otherwise schedule a followup for more info if they are interested

If (4) fails, try again in 1-2 months.

rubidium··on A Microfluidic D-subminiature Connector (2013)
Yes, lots of uses.

One of the bigger hits was Berkeley Lights, a big deal in early cell line development for monoclonal antibodies: https://www.berkeleylights.com/technology/

But there’s be numerous others. All have advanced state of the art. But as another commenter said, not much for home use. Just industry.

rubidium··on How should we handle an over-productive employee?
To (3)'s point, the manager doesn't realize what's possible and the current devs are actually working 4 hours a week. Bob is exception, and _actually_ working 40 hours a week and getting 10x done.
rubidium··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
Because everyone buys your product once and never thinks about it again.

Really: I’ve talked to commercial product managers who bemoan the fact that all their customers are perfectly happy with the 10-20 year old instrument they have. There’s no revenue there.

rubidium··on Declining quality of consumer-grade products – 2009 fridge compressor autopsy
This is something I’m interested in. There are strong plastics, but a lot of stuff nowadays seems to be the cheapest plastic imaginable. Anyway to know if what you’re getting?
rubidium··on I used DALL·E 2 to generate a logo
Hunh, I’ll be in that neck of the world next week. Need to look into this…
rubidium··on Sitting and standing at work (2015)
“ Nothing is really gained by the other party seing my lips move.“ Eh, maybe for you. Hard of hearing folks and more extroverted folks will disagree. Depends on your team.
rubidium··on Ask HN: What are you using to manage in your team the projects/features?
Does Shortcut have any support for formal requirements management (e.g. ISO9001 support)?

The R4J plugin for JIRA saves a ton of headache around that... but Shortcut looks nice so thought worth checking.
