ron0c··on Exploring Microsoft's Phi-3-Mini and its integration with tool like Ollama
Asking a leading LLM to "code a game" is a tall order. I have found a lot of success with self hosted small models to accomplish coding that would have taking me months without. I just break down the "code me a game" to its parts.

Think of it like an extended auto complete.

ron0c··on Exploring Microsoft's Phi-3-Mini and its integration with tool like Ollama
This is the AI I am excited for. Data and execution local to my machine. I think Intel is betting on this with the copilot included processors. I hope ollama or other local AI services will be able to utilize these co-processors soon.
ron0c··on How to prevent Lyme disease this summer
It's called feeling 'ticklish'.
ron0c··on Ask HN: What things are happening in ML that we can't hear over the din of LLMs?
UW-Madison's ML+X community is hosting Machine Learning Marathon that will be featured as a competition on Kaggle (https://www.kaggle.com/c/about/host)

"What is the 2024 Machine Learning Marathon (MLM24)?

This approximately 12-week summer event (exact dates TBA) is an opportunity for machine learning (ML) practitioners to learn and apply ML tools together and come up with innovative solutions to real-world datasets. There will be different challenges to select from — some suited for beginners and some suited for advanced practitioners. All participants, project advisors, and event organizers will gather on a weekly or biweekly basis to share tips with one another and present short demos/discussions (e.g., how to load and finetune a pretrained model, getting started with GitHub, how to select a model, etc.). Beyond the intrinsic rewards of skill enhancement and community building, the stakes are heightened by the prospect of a cash prize for the winning team."

ron0c··on Review: A Dive into Mikrotik's Weird SmartNIC (2022)
While a cool experiment. I don't understand why you'd use this on a RPi unless your poor-man's server was already the RPi. Isn't that the beauty of this device is it's a router/firewall on a board that takes up 0-U space?
ron0c··on Launch HN: Akiflow (YC S20) – Bring your tasks and calendars together
O365 was the first thing I was looking for. The university I work for is heavily invested in O365 calendaring and Tasks, but for myself personally I use a combination of other services. If this could bring them all together for my wife and I to have a single pane of glass I'd be in.
ron0c··on Podman: A tool for managing OCI containers and pods
I had to look up what depends_on accomplishes, so maybe I'm missing something here, but wouldn't an If/then/else sort that out as well as give you more options?
ron0c··on Podman: A tool for managing OCI containers and pods
I used to think so until I started just using bash scripts in replacement of docker-compose files.
ron0c··on NES.css – NES-Style CSS Framework
I am not a web developer, but I don't understand what is needed to be 'installed' to use a css? Could someone explain why the default install isn't a clone of a nes.css?
ron0c··on Full-Bleed Layout Using CSS Grid
I can tell you why I, a sys admin interested in dabbling in html/css for my own personal website, looked into CSS Grid.. Firefox Developer Start Page. Right there in the middle.

ron0c··on Making Instagram.com faster: Part 3 – cache first
I was looking to make williamscales's very complaint as soon as I read this. Instagram's latest beta for Android 10 does not include this hover button.

Maybe iOS only for now.

ron0c··on A 30th anniversary note to Prince of Persia fans
Thank you! The link I knew would be in the comments somewhere.
ron0c··on Insulin Pumps, Decapped Chips and Software Defined Radios
Too much of anything is bad, that is the definition of 'too much'.
ron0c··on Insulin Pumps, Decapped Chips and Software Defined Radios
> this work is serving as an important check&balance as well as pushing them to invest in R&D versus sitting back and milking their patents.

Thank you for your reply. This is what angers me the most. They drug companies have a solution. Keep buying insulin, keep buying needles, keep buying new pods, sensors, and apps. No, this can be fixed, it can be better.

ron0c··on Google unveils Stadia cloud gaming service

ron0c··on Universities have turned over hundreds of patents to patent trolls
You will notice that University of Wisconsin Madison is not on that list. This is because Dr. Harry Steenbock (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Steenbock) with fantastic vision started the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF http://www.warf.org/about-us/about-us.cmsx) where discoveries made at UW get the help of the team of lawyers to guide through the patent process while the royalties paid then go back to the university. Starting with his discovery on fortifying food with Vitamin D by method of ultraviolet light in 1925.

WARF is an enormous success at UW and last year alone contributed over $100 million back to the university.

ron0c··on Chromecast + NFC
According to iFixIts teardown: https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Chromecast+2015+Teardown/501...

It has a Marvell Avastar 88W8887 chip, which has NFC built in. http://www.marvell.com/wireless/88W8887/ as well as FM Radio.

I said this should be used for "Tap and Play"

Yes, you are correct, title changed to reflect this.
ron0c··on Lenovo’s Chief Technology Officer Discusses the Superfish Adware Fiasco
>We are digging through. By the end of the week you will get an absolute statement on that. I do not believe there is any. But I want to be 1,000 percent sure.

Lenovo could come out ahead on this thing IMO if they are honest and really clean up their default builds from here on out.

Take note from your new acquisition Motorola and how they just add a little bit here and there to the AOSP builds. Not flood them with a bloatware and Motorola Email, Motorola Browser, and such like some companies do.
