robertAngst··on Apple’s US job footprint grows to 2.4M
To be fair, Apple forces you to use their proprietary hardware and software.

This means you must join the Apple ecosystem to compete, even if you strongly disagree with their practices.

robertAngst··on Apple Confirms $1M Reward for Anyone Who Can Hack an iPhone
Governments are strong. Wow.

I forget the influence until I see things like this.

robertAngst··on Why is modern web development so complicated?
This is good that you are calling this out.

I've seen non-science in Healthcare, and I've spoke out against it. I don't really understand why people are stubborn when there is data, and the data is solid.

If I could wish anything in software engineering- follow the data.

robertAngst··on The Cloud
I worry a company will bait and switch with me. I have seen products get discontinued.

But yes, this is outsourcing a problem for a cost.

robertAngst··on Alphabet overtakes Apple to become most cash-rich company
This is USD?

I know it seems like a doomsday scenerio, but if the US goes through a moderate hyperinflation, do these companies die?

robertAngst··on More money than anyone imagined: an explanation for why the bubble never burst
Okay, but what happens when it gets below 0% with QE5?

Thats when Bitcoin hits 6 figures, or thats what the libertarian in me has been saying for a decade.

robertAngst··on My Last Macbook Pro
I bought an $800 gaming laptop 6 years ago, formatted everything and installed windows. Handles 100% of my dev work inc emulators and media editing.

If I could recommend something, it would be to look for similar. A SSD + Name Brand Video Card in any laptop will be fine.

robertAngst··on Google Photos is making photos semi-public
Is this an actual risk? you would need to guess a link.

Serious question

robertAngst··on France has approved a digital services tax despite threats of retaliation by US
> But again arbitrarily punishing or helping some corporations opens up the possibility of corruption and corporate meddling as corporations look for favors.

Like it or not, but this is designed into politics.

Its just as dirty and evil as it sounds.

robertAngst··on Tales from the spam filter of an Android app developer
I don't understand what you are looking for.

Do you want your folders to be organized/displayed different?

Or you want this integrated without having to download an app?

robertAngst··on Choosing the Wrong Lane in the Race to 5G
5G solves different problems.

Panasonic(at a trade show) says they can do 'next gen GPS' with 5g. Basically better location. This could be the solution for the winter problem in self driving cars.

robertAngst··on English speakers should learn math instead of a second language
I teach a programming class and one of the 'easy' things I ask about is- "Have you taken algebra?"

All but 1 person had taken algebra, and with that I start into variables and functions.

So yes, people learn competent math skills in high school.

robertAngst··on English speakers should learn math instead of a second language
>The idea of teaching children math as a language from day one is an interesting concept though.

How and how young?

I have a newborn I'm teaching numbers.

robertAngst··on Conflict at Walmart threatens its ecommerce battle with Amazon
I read this article and I love the capitalism.

A company is losing money to give customers better service.

Its not selfless, but its a phenomena.

I have never enjoyed shopping more than with Walmart grocery pickup. And Walmart online is superior to Amazon (cost alone).

Is it bad to employ low wage workers?

robertAngst··on Partnering with publishers for a better journalism experience
I'm the other way, google is probably the best company in my lifetime. Its recent Apple exploit 0day, I'm a bit skeptical of the programming.

Google has the resources to make better products.

robertAngst··on Kuo: Apple to include new scissor switch keyboard in MacBook
> MacBooks are the best laptops in many respects

I've never heard this before.

I thought some people needed their proprietary software that could only be run on Apple products, and that is what forces someone to buy a Macbook.

What are they best in class for?

EDIT: Thank you for the serious responses

Electrical Engineering, its very cool to be able to calculate and invent anything.
robertAngst··on America’s Monopoly Crisis Hits the Military
Healthcare is expensive because of Physicians.

They are the bottleneck. The American Medical Association has lobbied 400,000,000 dollars in the last 30 years to make sure they are the only ones that can issue prescriptions.

Making 300,000 USD/yr is unnatural, even for professionals. The market is artificial and gives them massive power even outside yearly income.

robertAngst··on America’s Monopoly Crisis Hits the Military
>because the Primes will come muscle them out.

Over and over people mention this phenomena. I am not sure why its okay, or that people even suggest giving these organizations more money.

robertAngst··on Microsoft's Linux Kernel
>In the mid 2000's the Mac really took off due to being a good-enough Linux replacement on the command line, while taking care of all the hardware integration and providing a sleek desktop experience. This really helped the Mac take off among hackers. This system wasn't as open-source as Linux, but it was good enough: Most of us don't want to mess about with the desktop stack.

Who are you to claim this?

The closed off nature of Apple is very dangerous to trust, and I don't know any 'hackers' who are willing to risk unchecked/vulnerable OSes.

I have no idea if Apple has a backdoor to the FBI. We do know on Linux there is no hidden backdoor.

robertAngst··on Infinite loop in macOS Night Shift in the summer near the Arctic Circle
What is the standard for using datetime libraries?

Use the one that comes with each language, or use some UTC library?

robertAngst··on Ask HN: What do you do with your Raspberry Pi?
Seems like a Pi is overkill for a few of these, why not a micro?
robertAngst··on The BS-Industrial Complex of Phony A.I.
AI in 2019 is useful math + programming.

AI in books is impossible in 2019.

I don't cringe, but then again, my boss is really happy with the AI program I built. Maybe its time to change definitions or terms.

robertAngst··on The BS-Industrial Complex of Phony A.I.
Okay, but as much as we believe profitable companies are run by idiots, they arent. They need to stay profitable or create profit, so they hire technical managers that know that AI is really just finding uses for data.

All of tech is magic to the non-tech people.

robertAngst··on How Artificial Intelligence Is Changing Science
I want to do linear algebra on this data

robertAngst··on How Artificial Intelligence Is Changing Science
Companies don't care what it is called. People are hired to do jobs.

'AI' is just math + programming. Don't overthink it.

robertAngst··on Google’s Rivals Gear Up to Make Antitrust Case
At what pricepoint? Is the issue, google is low cost, and competitors are not on the same level?
robertAngst··on Google’s Rivals Gear Up to Make Antitrust Case
They do not have a monopoly in Maps.

Say what it is, you built your platform using google, and they changed prices.

robertAngst··on Raspberry Pi 4
I find it funny how I look at the RP4 and think, I don't need anything new.

However, if you needed massive amounts of data transfer + multithreaded IOT, this would do the job.

I will say, the more research I do, the less the Rasp Pi matters, SOC/SOM are comparable in prices.

robertAngst··on What Happens After Amazon’s Domination Is Complete? Its Bookstore Offers Clues
Darn I clicked the link, I gave NYT money due to my fear.

Although this doesnt change anything. Given how easy it would be for a competitor Fortune 500 to dump resources and marketing into a competing store, they could never 'get away with murder'.

FAANG has more to worry about the tech bubble, than the world with FAANG.
