robarr··on Papercraft Models of Computers
Not for me. The link (I only tried the CPC 464) served a pdf thru docdroid.net. Although I tried on an iOS device. Sometimes this things are smart and check the user agent before pushing a payload.
robarr··on TRS-80: a TRS-80 running a custom Associated Press ROM
I was in high school in the early eighties in South America: we had TRSs in our computer lab and a schoolmate brought his dad’s 100 a couple of times. Except France, Japan, the UK and the the soviet block countries, which developed home computers systems, the rest of the world entered the computer era with Us machines.
robarr··on What service do you dislike using but keep using anyway?
Google search. The combination results Of a search including videos and sites is unsurpassed for guides and diy. As long as Google owns YouTube no other search engine will get closer.
robarr··on Obligatory “OMG why is HN red and green?!” post
The alternating red and green numbering are very hard to notice for even slightly colorblind people like me, the red banner is not and it always make me kind of giggle: To allow some degree of ‘fun’ on one of the most spartan sites on the web is kind of endearing.
robarr··on Fictional Videogame Stills
The multicolored letters on the first piece brought so many memories of being just a kid and playing with poke commands and little print and go to routines to display rainbow colored moving letters and making the first steps into graphics on 8 bit computers. I suppose we were all artists back then !
robarr··on Twitter to wipe Trump followers before handover
Per the CNN article

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/12/22/politics/biden-twitter-wh...

“Twitter will notify followers of these accounts to provide context that the content will be archived and allow them the choice to follow the Biden administration's new accounts," Pacilio said. "For example, people who follow @WhiteHouse will be notified that the account has been archived as @WhiteHouse45 and given the option to follow the new @WhiteHouse account."

robarr··on Biden team slams Twitter over plan to wipe followers from White House accounts
The title of the article is kind of inflammatory but it is the title cnn chose so I left it. More clearly:

“Twitter will notify followers of these accounts to provide context that the content will be archived and allow them the choice to follow the Biden administration's new accounts," Pacilio said. "For example, people who follow @WhiteHouse will be notified that the account has been archived as @WhiteHouse45 and given the option to follow the new @WhiteHouse account."

robarr··on GitHub Source Code Leak
The reasons the guy who says leaked it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/jnpufo/using_t...

Using the same trick as the one with youtube-dl, I uploaded the entire GitHub backend source code to GitHub's own DMCA repo. Maybe now not only GitHub can have the chance to fix the "bug", but the entire community as well? ;)

robarr··on User's Kindle eBook collection revoked by Amazon (2012)
The kindle for pc software downloads your books on a folder. These are the encrypted versions with no real evident names to identify but it is a local copy that you can backup.

If you want to go the dedrm way It has been answered a little further down the thread:

robarr··on Next-Generation IBM POWER10 Processor
“GAFAM A more inclusive grouping referred to as GAFAM or "Big Five", defines Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft as the tech giants.[18][19][20][21] Besides Saudi Aramco, the GAFAM companies are the five most valuable public corporations in the world as measured by market capitalization.[3] Nikos Smyrnaios justified the GAFAM grouping as an oligopoly that appears to take control of the Internet by concentrating market power, financial power and using patent rights and copyright within a context of capitalism.[22]“

robarr··on A meteorite older than Earth shows evidence of ancient volcanism
Am i the only one pleasantly surprised to find out that syfy.com publish serious articles and not only little green men speculation?
robarr··on Apple blocks Google from running its internal iOS apps
let’s not be naives... apple is happy getting billions of dollars from google, who use this data for exactly the same thing than facebook, and it is much less transparent to the user that the opt in from the facebok app. There are no saints here even if apple has a privacy stance far better for us users than the other two parties.
robarr··on Flight Simulator 4 from 1989 running on three immersive monitors (2017)
sometimes i find myself grumbling over some article where anybody doing a little coding calls himself a hacker and thinking “in my days we use to code our own (insert any now commercially o free available software) ..” but this is hacking at its pure and best: radically transforming something with code.

robarr··on The end of the world podcast with Josh Clark
It's a science driven podcast about the existentials risks we face.

Per it's own website:

Oct 4, 2018

We humans could have a bright future ahead of us that lasts billions of years. But we have to survive the next 200 years first.

robarr··on Cybercriminals Use Malicious Memes That Communicate with Malware
Is this not a waste of resources? the malware creators could open a twitter account and post commands directly using established and apparently inocuous phrases or words. tweeting “hi” is not a breach of ToS and is less complicated.
robarr··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
It kind of worries me that's the last point he makes is to see if the Air will be powerful enough for the work he does.. It would be my number one
robarr··on 2018 Mac Mini Review
my apple tv 4 plays natively 1080p h265 with 5.1 audio with infuse 5 pro served by my pentium with 8 gigs of ram plex server over lan. Strangely, i am sure and old version of the plex app did the same. i think its more an issue of the way the videos are muxed and the audio codec.
robarr··on Colorizing and restoring old images with deep learning
I know this is HN and we always hope machines will help us anywhere but i suspect (and hope too) that the human perspective will always be needed. Photography is as subjective as anything can be.

robarr··on Phrack Magazine (1985-2016)
many moons ago, i was able to escape the restricted shell of the first internet provider in my country, type the magical incantation cat etc/passwd and watch the file scroll on my screen. Then panic, exit the shell, make some dumb gopher search for my class. Never felt so alive until i ... for the first time with my girlfriend :-)

Thank you phrack, could not have done it without you! (i mean the first thing, Phrack was good but not that good!)
