rnotaro··on Oggify: Download Songs Directly from Spotify
That's probably because you are running Netflix in Google Chrom. The streams are 720P (1280x720) and hava a lower level of DRM.

Only Microsoft Edge and natives apps are providing the highest definition available. You can see the stats by pressing CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-D while Netflix is active.

rnotaro··on I am a New York City public high school student. The situation is beyond control
I am 25 years old, vaccinated two times (we are only eligible to 2 vaccines in Québec, Canada), had contact with a COVID positive case on sunday last week (January 2th) and I got sick enough to not be able to work from January 4th to January 9th.

I was not hospitalized and I was not able to work due to some quite heavy symptoms that prevent me to talk or focus more than a few minutes on a task.

Why does Netflix require UHD on Netflix Originals?

Answer: In 2014, Netflix made the decision to begin shooting and delivering all Originals in UHD. This decision was made for several reasons, the most of important of which is to future-proof our content. UHD is here, and adoption of UHD in the home is increasing. In just a few years, it will be harder to find an HD television than a UHD television. For this reason, we feel it only makes sense to shoot natively in the format that most of our customers will see for years to come. The experience for customers viewing HD is still fantastic. Our encoding pipeline takes a UHD master and produces beautiful HD (and SD) streams for all those customers who are viewing on smaller or older displays.

rnotaro··on Running your own email is increasingly an artisanal choice, not a practical one
https://mailinabox.email/ does most of that.

I have my own domain since when I was about 15 years old and used that for a while on a digital ocean droplets. It's incredibly easy to set-up.

The only issue I had was that other people were not getting my mail and I sometimes it was not even reaching their spam folders. Probably because Google/Microsoft were blocking that IP range of Digital Oceans.

Nowadays I just pay for a personal Gsuite license and use Google Infrastructure.

Much simpler that way and I'm almost guaranteed that my mail will reach the recipients. You only need to set-up your DMARC / SPF records and point your MX records to the ones that Google provides.

I'm always surprised how HN is disconnected from the reality sometimes.

That's because all the TOR entry/exit nodes and relays IPs addresses are public [1].

rnotaro··on Verizon voice mail getting hijacked to the same number for years
I just did some verifications and it seems to be a number used by RoboKiller[1]. Have you wife installed that application or any spam blocking app?

It basically forward spam call to that number. Maybe a bug or something happened when you deleted the app and the calls were still forwarding after the deletion.

Sorry for the delay!

I was working at their Montreal Studio. It's exclusively a video game studio. I was mostly working in QA on Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

Even if the game is technically developed by Monolith Productions, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) helps with their ressources (Artists, QA, Devs).

There's also alot of internal tooling for Builds automation, Automated testing / QA Aids tools, etc that is handled by WBIE as the game editor.

We didn't see movies before they got out but we had access to a 30-50 persons theater room that I was able to "rent" for free outside of business hours to watch movies with friends and show them the non-secure areas of the office. (Cafeteria (Free drinks!), gaming room, etc.))

I'm not really into commics but we had a room with thousands of comic books that we could take and read anytime we wanted (WB owns DC Entertainment).

I worked there 6-8 months when I was out of school before getting my first dev job.

rnotaro··on Are daily standups hurting your team?
My team have "Daily Scrum" at 9AM every morning all year long so it's booked into everyone calendar. Sure once it a while someone have a meeting with an external team and it's perfectly fine that they don't come to the daily.

Most of the time there's no managers and it goes like that:

  - What you work on yesterday?
-- I've worked on automated tests X, Y and Z, had a few meeting with an analyst to validate the tests.

  - Did you had any issues.
-- No / I had a few issues about the X process, is there anyone that could me, I have a few questions ?

  - What are you doing today.
  -- Today I'm going to work on X Y Z with XX and I have a few personnal meetings about X Y Z with Team X for Project Z.
Our Teams meetups are 25 minutes (for a team 10 individuals). We finish the round-table in usually less than 10 minutes and keep the extra time for the people that wants to talk in depth about the issues they talked about in the "Stand-up". Others can leave the meeting and go on about their daily operations.
