rngname22··on Clairvoyant Remote Viewing: The US Sponsored Psychic Spying
I heard his comments as 'this is a thing the military has studied and taken seriously, and there were real programs with funding towards it' not 'this is a real thing that works'.
rngname22··on Google is deleting inactive accounts. Here's what that means
What's the chance this is some necessary legal step Google has to take to meet an unintended consequence of new regulation like Digital Services Act?
rngname22··on Cybertruck Is Already a Production Nightmare for Tesla
Longevity / resistant to ocean air, strength compared to plastic, and its neat that it's bulletproof?
rngname22··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
You're missing the point which is that growth mindsets, while well intentioned, may optimize for the wrong things and cause not only suboptimal outcomes but even inhuman ones.

The point isn't that the particular strategy for health and fitness is right or wrong, it's that the growth mindset causes the person (Bob?) to over-focus on that aspect of their life to the detriment of more important but less obvious ones, like personal relationships, being kind to others, or enjoying fallen leaves in autumn.

Bob spends his 20s trying to improve his bodyfat percentage, max his bench, get a Porsche, and build his 401k.

He misses out on his niece's early childhood, loses his highschool friendships, and breaks up with his girlfriend for a job opportunity in a different city.

This is like the printer company focusing on revenue instead of brand loyalty or its reputation.

rngname22··on Physical attractiveness and intergenerational social mobility
It's only weird if you are conflating physical beauty and sexual attractiveness. And symmetry tends to be a pretty universal physical indicator of beauty and doesn't change much from 15 onward.

Physical beauty is often an attractor of lust, but someone with no sexual hormones or sexual desire could still assess or another's beauty without a sexual component, an asexual person could, someone not sexually attracted to a given gender could still assess physical attractiveness of someone of that gender (a straight woman assessing a girl's beauty), etc.

rngname22··on 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, Report says
Hating your job is a matter of the real, material conditions * your own perspective, optimism, ability to make lemonade out of lemons, and pain tolerance.

Unfortunately it's often seen as easier to change the former than the latter (which seems to perhaps be developed throughout childhood and one's upbringing and former experiences), but I would perhaps try to brainstorm if you can ways to improve your own subjective perspective/lens itself. If you quit your prior job, and with your new one hate and want to quit it/think your discomfort for it'll get you fired, maybe you could try to reach out to those around you in your peer network (maybe a former dev coworker or boss or a current coworker and try to get their perspective on things). Maybe there's something with your own ability to tolerate discomfort or find solace in good aspects of your jobs that you could find.

rngname22··on What's the Best City for Techies in 2024?
Your link uses FBI Uniform Crime Rates.

Some facts about FBI UCR:

1) The FBI web site recommends against using its data for ranking because these rankings lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that often create misleading perceptions adversely affecting cities and counties, along with their residents

https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2010/crime-in-the-u.s.-...

2) they are submitted voluntarily by police departments

3) many police departments don't even participate: "This year about 7,000 police agencies, covering about 35% of the U.S. population, were missing."

https://www.themarshallproject.org/2022/10/08/the-problem-wi...

4) From your own Wiki link: "Often, one obtains very different results depending on whether crime rates are measured for the city jurisdiction or the metropolitan area."

5) The BJS reports that 45% of violent crimes and 36% of property crimes go unreported to police. And I don't know that we can assume the rates of not reporting crimes are consistent across metros.

rngname22··on Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO
Can anyone explain why when I go to https://twitter.com/sama I don't see the linked tweet, but if I navigate to https://twitter.com/sama/status/1726594398098780570 I can? Is this a nuance of like tweets being privatable? Or deleted tweets remaining directly navigable? Sorry probably something basic about how twitter functions.
rngname22··on YouTube will show labels on videos that use AI
If you could pick a curated video catalog, where a human editorial team accepted or declined new video submissions at upload time, and a human team decided what videos ought to be featured / amplified more broadly to various user clusters, would you prefer that to an open system where anyone could upload and ML decided that some users enjoy seeing reptilian conspiracies but a particular group of moderators/curators weren't the arbitrators of truth and taste and moral purity?

(not a loaded question, and it is possible different companies could emerge that would compete on the basis of their taste/curation/moderation policies. also equally possible it would be too costly/ unprofitable for the market to bear many smaller competing entities).

I think perhaps there's a third option but we just haven't really defined and figured it out yet. Some mixture of crowdsourced taste/moderation plus top down taste/moderation plus unfiltered UGC. Twitter's new user-generated Community Notes might be a good example of a step in a new direction. Social media is still relatively new.

rngname22··on Doctors complete first successful face and whole-eye transplant

rngname22··on Everything I Thought I Knew About Nasal Congestion Is Wrong
There are strips that go inside?

Intake is a specific brand, its a reusable magnetic plastic band and little adhesive strips you put on either side of you nose with the little piece of metal that the magnetic strip attaches to. Seems to be less harsh on the skin than the breathe-rite strips and also much stronger of an effect of pulling the nostrils open. Intake goes on the outside.

rngname22··on Sam Bankman-Fried doesn't recall
My own intuition is that there are people who call bullshit often enough that they are often wrong and falsely accuse others, and there are people who always assume the best intentions and good faith on other actors but often miss being bullshitted, but that overall the accuracy of both groups in sensing and correctly identifying bullshit or non-bullshit is commonly, universally poor, and accurate bullshit-detection is a skill that is held by a minority. And further, that someone like the author who would assess an average person as being good at detecting bullshit is likely the type that thinks everyone is bullshitting all the time (and so is in fact able to evade being bullshitted with some frequency) but also commonly falsely accuses others of bullshitting when the other is operating honestly (not to say the other might not be stupid, or selfish, or naive, or have different values, etc, but not bullshitting). If you accuse everyone of being full of shit all the time, you might avoid signing up for a predatory loan but you'll probably also burn some bridges socially that if you'd known the truth you would have mended.
rngname22··on Gulf Stream weakening now 99% certain, and ramifications will be global
The Gulf stream is about making parts of the US east coast and northern Europe warmer. If you like being warm, you can leave those areas, but it's hard to say how much colder they will be or how quickly.

For sea-level rise climate change mitigation, look at topographical maps of coastal areas. Some coastal areas have very quick climbs in elevation as you move inland. Others remain very shallow for incredible distances. The more dense an area is with wealth (think Manhattan), the more likely it is for there to be actual mitigation to sea-level rise like substantial seawalls. But the more dispersed the population and infrastructure is, the less possible that will be.

For precipitation related changes, extreme weather / natural disaster related changes, etc. we don't have much reliable modeling. But consider what the economy and demographics are like in the area you reside in, how much existing poverty or famine there is, how reliable infrastructure is, and whether your area is a net food importer or net food exporter and how much margin it has to undergo decreased agricultural productivity and still feed itself. Consider the ease or difficulty with which net-food-importer-region displaced refugees would be able to migrate to your area, as well as the size of such populations.

rngname22··on NY bill would require a criminal history check for the purchase of a 3D printer
I don't feel the need to do so at this point, but I do feel the moral imperative to spread the alarm on a disastrous industrial process (when precautions are not taken) that many in the maker movement are woefully unaware of, the same way I would if I suddenly became aware of the dangers of asbestos and was on my way to work when I overheard a conversation among hobbyists about spraying asbestos foam around in their bedrooms without much knowledge of it.
rngname22··on LinkedIn laying off nearly 700, mostly from core engineering teams
Having data fluency, code fluency, you are already a valuable asset in many horizontal moves in tech companies and large companies with unavoidable tech bureaucracy - move to a sales role and now you can actually answer tough technical questions during prospecting or qualification without having to harass an engineer. Move to a PM role and have a better understanding of the level of effort of a task. Move to an operations role at a dinosaur conglomerate and use your scripting and automation abilities to outperform your peers and reinvent how your team works.

Learn to describe your experience and goals as a story that makes sense and is compelling.

Most white collar work would benefit from experience in software or data, whereas lifting 2x4s into place may not.

Emitting microplastic dust into your home.
rngname22··on NY bill would require a criminal history check for the purchase of a 3D printer
One that doesn't create millions of bits of floating microplastics in your home and lungs.
rngname22··on NY bill would require a criminal history check for the purchase of a 3D printer
Be aware that many or most 3D printers create an incredible amount of plastic dust and microdust that floats in the air, pollutes your home, gets in your lungs, etc.

If you've ever given a shit about microplastics, do your research when shopping for 3D printers. And if you don't care about the environment but do care about your health, take precautions as far as PPE/where you use the machine.

We need a term for the type of LLM-solipsism where someone thinks their own interaction with a LLM indicates something big about the LLM rather than is just a reflection of the way their prompt started and the conversation continued.

This is what happens when Product Managers don't understand the technologies they are working with.
rngname22··on Questions I ask during 1:1 with my direct reports
If the manager isn't satisfied with receiving a "hmmmm, I can't think of anything in particular at this time off the top of my head" for most of these questions 80% of the time, then these questions require a level of introspection that would necessitate setting aside 30-60 minutes of pre-work for the meeting to do introspection and brainstorming, or what most likely happens is the report just makes up some bullshit on the fly that they think their manager wants to hear to "what motivated you this past month at work?" or "what are some ideas you have now that you’d like us to try implementing in our team?".

For those of us who are spending all of our cognitive horsepower just to keep rowing the boat forward and meeting expectations and don't have spare hours to just wander and contemplate lief and work and motivation and improvements to process or the team, this seems like a recipe for receiving random bullshit answers.

UNLESS - the manager were to schedule time for that pre-work, like setting 30 min on the cal for separately brainstorming answers and then 30 min immediately after discussing anything that came up. Which I _do_ think would be awesome.

But just saying "hey here's a google doc, any time you have a thought pop up during the next couple weeks jot it down" won't even work. You need to schedule and prioritize it agains the other tasks you are asking the report to work on.

rngname22··on PFAS Forever Chemicals Present in Some Plastic Recyclable Bottles
I don't really believe that, for the case of a chemical engineer who was able to complete at minimum a four year engineering degree who works in Texas (where said company is located).
rngname22··on PFAS Forever Chemicals Present in Some Plastic Recyclable Bottles
I just went down a rabbithole of googling Inhance Technologies, seeing an article mentioning a lawsuit against them by both the EPA as well another group, seeing an employee quoted in said article, googling them, and thinking about how it would be to work at a company that manufactures a PFAS product.

Do they feel any guilt? Do they believe their use of carcinogenic substances that do not biodegrade and become dispersed globally with no cleanup mechanism is just....moral? Do they believe anthropogenic industrial activity is just justified by the Good and Benefits it can bring to the world? Do they just assume these small messes we make while advancing Science and Progress will be easily cleaned up by smarter, more powerful humans in the future? Do they just consider the health effects to be worth whatever marginal improvement in waterproofing we get to our fucking disposable plastic cups in return, like smoking a single cigarette being no big deal?

Or do they just choose to ignore the headlines because its uncomfortable to think about how you might be one of the bad guys and their education and skillset is a sunk cost and acknowledging the environmental destruction they wreak would mean giving up a lucrative income, sort of how a FAANG employee might see a headline about IG being bad for teens mental heath and telling themselves 'whatever I'm sure it's not that bad'?

rngname22··on Conversation with Zuckerberg, this time we talked as photorealistic avatars
The second-life knockoffs were only necessary because of the trade-off they made to target low-price HMD market and on-device GPU+CPU processing rather than PC VR or processing puck design. This photogrammetry based avatar stuff has already been working for years. See Meta's previous "Codec Avatar" in 2021 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS4Gf0PWmZs) or Unreal's MetaHuman (https://www.roadtovr.com/epic-metahuman-mesh-import-scan-rea...).
rngname22··on Upcycled Bicycle Panniers DIY
I have some Watershed drybags that I really love that I want to figure out the best way to use as bicycle panniers, does anyone have suggestions?

This is the model: https://www.drybags.com/product/assault-pack/

The backpack straps are removable and the bag rolls down quite a bit like most rolltops do. I think the loops where the waist strap is fed through may be a good attachment point but part of me thinks I'd need almost need side baskets or netting or a harness on either side of the rear rack that could just accept a a large bag without the bag itself having any great attachment points.

rngname22··on Lead poisoning causes more death, IQ loss than thought: study
My old bottle with this same filter was glass, but it was very heavy and it also ended up shattering when I was climbing a mountain and lost my balance and had to toss it onto a nearby ledge. And the filter itself filters a lot of pfas and other microcontaminants.

"That's why we've taken a layered approach, incorporating a variety of high-performance filter media into one powerful filter. Crafted and rigorously tested in the United States, this multi-layered filter is engineered to effectively target both tap water pollutants such as chlorine, microplastics, lead, PFAS, and more, as well as outdoor water contaminants like bacteria, viruses, and microbial cysts like cryptosporidium and giardia."

And the lid and straw itself is also made of plastic. Life is hard and something is better than nothing.
